First Aid

I have just completed the first of my 8 hour days on First Aid. Two 15 minute tea breaks and one 30 minute lunch break. It is full on. The best thing is you get the theory and then you are put into real life scenarios to work it out and what to use. I like this method of attack. I can feel more confident in my capacity to deal with a situation but it also means that we are learning to use each other to consult, help guide. When you have three people working on an injury case, no matter how complex, three people can talk each other through the procedures and give each other confidence. So, I have saved 4 plastic dummies and am pretty crash hot on my bandaging and shock and wound treatment. It's 12 to our whole group so there is a lot of knowledge sharing. It came as a big surprise to me to find out that only 3% of Australians have done any first aid training.it was a relief to find out only 3% of unconscious people need CPR. Phew! I do it every 3 years but decided to do the 2 day senior certificate to get myself more involved and give myself a better knowledge base. So far it has been a good boost to my confidence. By doing this I find I know more than I thought and am probably now more likely to help rather than worry about getting it all wrong. It's a tricky thing picking a challenge which will encourage me, enlighten me and educate me all at once. This first aid course is it. I don't feel out of my depth but I don't feel like I know it all either. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
