Adelaide celebrates autumn

Adelaide doesn't normally have autumn. We normally have a hot , dry summer which everyone complains about even though they love the beach and bbq weather  and then winter which seems to last for far too long. More and more people have been appreciating the cold, wet conditions which tends to advertise their country of origin. More and more people have complained about the heat when we have had it. Historically Adelaide has been famous for scorching, relentless summers which those who have kept journals have always commented on. This year our summer has been mild and we have had a spectacular autumn which we have decided to really appreciate. We have loved sitting outside, eating outside, being outside. We have taken to the street cafes, the outdoor activities. Children have been skipping and running down the street. People have been out for leisurely and not so leisurely walks. The kind weather has allowed us to think about fitness and  get us outside. We have had rain which is not usual for summer so our gardens are green. We have been pruning, clearing and planting and it seems odd in a way we have been able to carry out these activities for so long over summer and now autumn. By now it is normally cold. There have been confusing days where we don't know if we are hot or cold. Days where the layered look has been the outfit du jour and days where we go outside because it is far warmer and more inviting than indoors. Even weather is always a surprise to us but it has been a real pleasure to enjoy these lovely , sunny days.

Global Warming pushes lemmings off the planet

Bloomin' good question I'd say. The lemmings are diminishing rapidly in numbers because of warmer temperatures and the wrong type of snow. We are pushing lemmings off the planet. This weather needs fixing. NOW!

Weird Weather

It's overcast and weird. The weekend was weird because we had a storm but not much rain. Then last night it got cold. It's all over the place and we can see the dryness of the garden but it seems like it might rain so you don't know if you should water or not. Then it get warms, then it gets freezing. There is no real spring pattern and I guess one day it will be hot and just stay that way for a while. I think that is bothering us. After that weekend a couple of weeks back where we had a stinking hot Saturday with a north wind and plenty of dust, we have realised we are back to that again and we are trying to find the courage to face another long, hot, dry summer. It is getting us down whereas we would normally be looking forward to summer. We would normally feel confident and able to deal with it. It's why we live in Australia. this year though we are really down about it and the couldn't be bothered attitude hasn't gone. We are not difficult and we are pretty friendly. There is just this undercurrent . We want Australia back where we can just laugh and play in the sun, no worries. I was talking to an African guy today and he was saying there is no such thing as climate change in Africa. It's the same weather they have always had and they don't even talk about climate change. Weird.

We are so not happy. Adelaide turned out a vile day today weatherwise and I could see it on the horizon as I drove into town. The heat does not worry me, but as I drove to town I could see this pall of nasty grey mist blowing over us. Vile. Vile. Vile. Everything was already brown and you could see the trees drying up already. So much for the rain in winter. There is nothing in our soil...and still they are excavating and building houses. No rain. No water. Brown. In 5 minutes Adelaide has turned from green and healthy looking to brown and disgusting. The only htings which didn't mind were the roses. What a magnificent show of roses we had all the way to town. Hutt Steet was hot , dry and incredibly dusty. You couldn't breathe. Too warm, too dry , too windy and too dusty. We had fun inspite of the weather and drank plenty of water to keep hydrated. So when it was my turn to water the garden tonight I could see the damage already done. Our soil is as dry as a bone. We need water. Water to keep the dust down and water to keep things alive.
