Indian 'cheapmobile' a green nightmare

(Money Sharma/EPA)Indian 'cheapmobile' a green nightmare : "'That's what drove me - a man on a two-wheeler with a child standing in front, his wife standing behind, add to that the wet roads - a family in potential danger.'"

The Tata Nano is so cute and when you hear what the driving force was behind designing a small, affordable car for Indians is about, then we need to really think hard. While we all have the convenience of a car and a way of getting ourselves and our families around in the heat or wet, then we can hardly point the finger and say the Indians shouldn't do it because their numbers will create an energy nightmare. It's a bit unfair. There are so many countries where people are entitled to drive cars. We need to look at the problems of putting so many people on the road in India and then offer, as a planet, to solve the problem. Once we sort out the biofuel problem, find green solutions to fuel then it will not be a problem, but this is a situation where , as a world, we need to look at the equity of the situation, and then work as a team to come up with some workable solutions. It won't help the lungs of the Indians to have so many cars on the road...but you can understand their need to have a car the same as we have that need.
