Truck 'exploded' in Ghan crash

AdelaideNow... Truck 'exploded' in Ghan crash: "A TRUCKIE had an amazing escape when his vehicle collided with the Ghan passenger train north of Adelaide and 'exploded into segments'."

Maybe it's good the truck exploded into pieces like that. Maybe that is why no one is dead or gravely injured. The truck driver is in a stable condition and that says a lot about how the accident was noted and reported. The investigation will look at the causes but there were a lot of really big trucks on Adelaide's roads today. Really big. We shift a lot of stuff by road and our railway crossings can be difficult to negotiate and manage in some places. Trains can sometimes see what is blocking the railway lines and drivers can sometimes see the train coming. We actually need to look at the points at which train lines cross roads. There is one I have to cross where cars can turn right immediately over the line...well, that can be the cause of cars backing up over the train line if they are not ultra careful and aware of it. The Ghan is a big train. It's not going to be able to stop that easily so on all counts we need more warning and more slowing down before the crossings.
