Rudd's wife heads home for career talks. : "'I assume that it will become increasingly common for people who are married or in partnerships to aspire to be in politics while their partner is a business person in their own right.'"
Oh yes, we are going to have to drag politicians kicking and screaming into the 21st century because women have been working and running their lives in the real world for quite some time. It's what our social change and equity issues have been about. Therese Rein is a bona fide professional woman with all the success and frustrations of a proper professional woman. I should not like to have a head of state where the wife has to be an ornamental adjunct because that is not what women are in Australia. Our women are working hard and have aspirations and our professional women are extremely successful and well credentialled. It's this anachronistic approach which is stopping them from existing in their own right. Whoever is our Prime Minister should not be having a wife who cannot direct her own life and interests and who may well then serve our country better because she is a dynamic, independent woman. Forcing any succesful woman to abandon her career and interests to be the chattel of her husband and state is both retrograde and ludicrous in 2007.
