'Gandalf, Arsenal, it's dinnertime'

'Gandalf, Arsenal, it's dinnertime' :

"Children, it appears, are in growing danger from their parents of name abuse. Among the worst reported cases are Dre, Tupac, Jay-Z and Snoop. These unfortunates, when they grow up, may well wonder why they were named after a variety of transient rap stars."

I sometimes wonder what parents are thinking when they give their children names. Some names are destined to damage the life of the child unless they change it . Some kids use their middle name. Some kids have to hide their names. An unusual name might be all lovely and trendy but trying to live with it can be something else. I think those sorts of names should be second names, if anything. Very few people live a kind of life where they can tell the tale of their unusual name. Somehow or another it's the Kate's, John's , Tina's and Jeff's who stay together and find their spot. Maybe we should be more flexible as a society but the number of Tyrone's who've shortened themselves to Ty...and it suits, is astounding. The best name I have ever heard is Wanda Woolidge and I have never forgotten her because of it. I often wonder what became of her. While England is increasing the number of Kylies, we, thankfully , are not. Try pronouncing that the German way...Koolia...and it's a name which is unpronouncable in most parts and with an Australian accent...it's not good. Kylies are great people though. Very sound and down to earth.
