Unions hold May Day gathering early

Unions hold May Day gathering early :

"Traditionally unions use May Day to celebrate the eight-hour principle - eight hours work, eight hours play and eight hours sleep in a day."

It's a sensible principle. The 8 hours play isn't usually that. It's doctors, dentists, shopping, ironing, home maintenance, car maintenance, children, clothing, trades people...but it is then 8 hours when you can organise these things. I really do think we should run a hard line on the separation of work and life. People need to rest and people need to have a life. The current situation of loading people up at work and forcing them to over commit is only costing us in terms of health blow outs, fatigue, accidents, irrational behaviour, destructive behavior, depression, regression, aggression. It is costing the community big time. Well rested people who can cope will work better and with better application. This fear of dead wood needs to be dispensed with because no work place tolerates people whom others have to haul along. Workers are very intolerant of the lazy daisies. People who feel well and can think straight have a better capacity to contribute in an effective way because there isn't that ho-hum, drudge approach either. Time to really look at work place relations and how to give people a life so that they will work with enthusiasm and commitment. The money, yes, it works, but only so far, look at all the social issues we now have because people are stressed and strained. This thing called job satisfation has been overlooked for too long. People will work, but wehn they have a home life they will generate other interests and those will stimulate the economy. This fear of all of us being too lazy and not working eenough is being ripped to shreds by the social ills which have us entangled constantly in their web.WE need balance.
