La Fayette's Frigate
France is currently undertaking the really exciting project of building an exact replica of La Fayette's frigate Hermione . You need to be able to read French to get the full benefit of this site, but it is a comprehensive coverage of the project. It seems to be a thing people are doing all over the world . They are rediscovering their cultural heritage in a very real and interactive way. There has been considerable interest in the project world wide and countries like Britain have assisted with some historical details of the boat which is destined to make the same journey as its original to Boston,New York, Annapolis and the Bay of Chesapeake. It's another project which is involving others from different nations in the spirit of inquiry and the practising of their high level skills. A challenge. We are getting good at international challenges. At the age of 21, La Fayette fought on the side of the troops of General Washington. For 18 months the frigate took part in battles until the final victories in the Bay of Chesapeake and Yorktown. This event is legendary on both sides of the Atlantic and so in 1997 in the town of Rochefort, there was an idea of reliving it. The project is being sustained and supported by French sponsors and American support on the east coast. It's a huge project but it'll be great to see it come to fruition.
