Apriums

Farmers trial new apricot-plum cross. :

"The aprium is an apricot crossed with a plum and crossed back to an apricot, resulting in 75 per cent apricot and 25 per cent plum."

I had never heart of pluots until I read this article. No wonder they didn't do very well if we didn't even know they existed. Pluots are 50% plum and 50% apricot. If it's Satsuma plums so much the better. The apriums are only 25% plums. Both plums and apricots seem to have fallen out of favour . Shop peaches, nectarines, apricots have been horrible , tasteless and either too squishy or too hard. Even the peacherines have lost their texture. So they are not worth buying. I'll eat apricots and plums straight from the tree and dried apricots are brilliant for eating and cooking. Satsuma plums are my favourite because they have such a rich red colour and are wonderful for cooking. I look forward to the apriums, but I hope they make them edible. The pears went through a bad patch and this year they have been excellent, so there is hope for our summer fruit!
