Trip back in time to the cameleers

The Advertiser: Trip back in time to the cameleers :

"She was one of up to 500 descendents from three generations of the early Afghan cameleers who came from a wide area of Australia for a reunion and acknowledgement of the 'Afghans' and their camels."

I used to have a neighbour who was a cook on a station and then a cook up at Woodside barracks during the second world war. She had so many tales to tell of Afghan traders and how they used to come with the things she needed. When she told the stories her eyes would light up and clearly there had been some very lively trade between her and the Afghans. I had had no idea we had camels here until she told me all these stories. The Afghans knew how to manage our dessert conditions and would materialise with things we were not able to purchase locally. It is fantastic this part of the spirit of Austrlaia is being remembered, acknowledged and celebrated. We have a rich tapestry as a culture and it should be celebrated.
