Spendless or spenthrift?

Consumer confidence falls. :

"Australian consumer confidence fell in July because of the London bombings, proposed changes to industrial relations and high oil prices."

I find this hard to believe. The shops have been unbelievably packed and people's trolleys and hands have been full, especially with pre Christmas bargains and winter bargains. And in Adelaide there have been some great buys just lately. Maybe we haven't lost confidence in SA. It has been cold, wet, miserable. Retail therapy works. Some parts of the country have been flooded and the weather would have stopped some people shopping .Couple that with the usual run of viruses, cols, flus, ear troubles and maybe some Australians are not spending. Everyone is sick but there is absolutely no local sign of a slow down in spending. People are monumentally unimpressed with the price of petrol. It's made them buy smaller cars. The London bombs did upset people because many of us have connections there but we are still spending and we are spending on services related to that particular event. How did this article arrive at its conclusions?
