The Australian: Chlamydia strikes penguin colony :
"A MYSTERIOUS outbreak of chlamydia, a bacterial infection that humans pass to each other through sex, has killed a dozen penguins at the San Francisco Zoo, a zoo spokeswoman said today."
It may well be mysterious and it may well be part and parcel of animals in captivity, but it seems to have come from the newbies and the impact on the penguins seems to be very sad. It is not sexually transmitted. Quite a while ago we had a terrible problem with our Koala's getting chlamidia and we were all beside ourselves because it was making them very sick and sterile. Thanks to our ever patient and methodical biodiversity experts our koalas are happy , fit and well, to the extent they are breeding prolifically in some places...another sore point at the moment! I just hope the San francisco Zoo can idientify the cause really quickly and thereby help the poor penguins.
