Rudd plans political donation overhaul

Rudd plans political donation overhaul : "'[But] I think you have got to be very worried, at the end of the day, about whether a democracy therefore ends up being up for sale.

'I'm not about to be Prime Minister of a country which allows that to happen.'"

I applaud this. I think it's time money went into food, housing, transport, hospitals, research...anything but political campaigns and leaflets we just recycle. There is such waste and we need to aim to train people to get away form the advertising and brochures and focus on information and thought. I want to be able to go online or tune into radio or TV spots where I am kept up to date with political views and news. I think we can do away with paper and I think we can do away with campaigns which cost far too much. I really want the money to go into what we really need...food, health care...I should also like to think our politicians could talk to us and discuss with us. That our nation would be built on conversations and consultation. I should like to think you can be anyone and be a good politician and that you are not excluded because you lack funds. We need to put the politician back into politics and get us all talking about our needs, our hopes, our ways of doing things. I have heard some great discussions and interviews on the radio just lately. It's fantastic. We need to talk not spend.
