Better to stick to the letter of the tradition and return the ring to the owner when the engagement is broken. I do not quite understand throwing a 15000 dollar ring away. If nothing wlse it could have raised money for charity. But broken hearts and broken relationships can be very emotional, tricky things. Engagement rings and presents were always returned to the owners if the engagement was broken. That custom has now been upheld in our law. I wonder what has happened to the ring? Lost in some rubbish tip, I gather.
