Skateboard boys risking injury

AdelaideNow... Skateboard boys risking injury:

"While cycling injuries have fallen since helmet wearing became compulsory in SA in 1991, the number of skateboarders and in-line skaters presenting to emergency departments had doubled in the past six years, he said. 'The majority of patients are boys aged 15 and under,' he said."

When you seriously look at what the kids do, you can see why skateboarding is so popular and the park by Adelaide railway station gets a lot of visits, plenty of action and a lot of admiration from the little kids sitting on the train. But heads and concrete don't mix. I think it's time to sit down honestly with skateboarders, present them with the information and ask for their ideas and input. It's a perfect opportunity to engage young people in the development of their lifestyle and community and I am certain they will come up with some practical ideas we can implement. We are not going to stop them. They carry those boards with pride and they love skateboarding. Ask them. Talk to them. Involve them...just as you would with any other sport.
