Irwins may refuse state funeral

Irwins may refuse state funeral :

"STEVE Irwin's dad Robert has indicated the family may refuse an offer for a state funeral for his son because he was 'just an ordinary bloke'."

It is not for us to decide and I said yesterday I thought Steve Irwin was more like a rellie to us than a stateman and that is why he shouldn't have a state funeral. He was a rellie, in my mind it has to be a family thing and we are all part of the extended family. Others at work were against that notion and were quite clear he had been a great ambassador for Australia and australiana and therefore what would you do for an ambassador? They were also making the point that people overseas had a bigger picture of Steve Irwin than we did and he was so well known and so much appreciated all around the world. A number of countries have featured him this week and are sharing our sadness. That says a lot about him and the over australian bit was a part of his media image but it wasn't the man. The family will have to make that painful decision.
