Royal Bengal Tigers

Channelnewsasia.com: "Royal Bengal tigers are near extinction due to poaching for their skins and bones that are used in traditional medicines, and habitat loss due to human encroachment, wildlife experts say."

That's a pretty bold move, to rescue the tigers from circuses and release them into he Jaldapara sanctuary so that they can breed. It'll be the first programme of its kind in the eastern region. I hope the programme works because the Royal Bengal tigers are magnificent animals. West Bengal has a law which prohibits the exhibition of tigers, lions and monkeys. I wonder if that applies to zoos as well. Santuaries are better places for animals, but some zoos have been critical in preserving species and are really the only safe, modern way for people to get to know our animals. If zoos are carefully planned they can be a home away from home if we have destroyed the habitat of animals with our incessant building projects.
