Pacific Islands Forum

Channelnewsasia.com: "New Zealand and Australia have opposed temporary labour movements from the Pacific and Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Friday he remained opposed to the idea.

'I don't like the idea of guest workers. I don't think we should go back to the schemes that used to exist back in the 19th century where cheap labour was brought in from the South Pacific, particularly into Queensland,' he told ABC radio."

We are part of the Pacific Islands Forum which will take part in Papua New Guinea this month. Clearly Mr Downer is against having any Pacific Island workers here. We haven't even discussed it yet! The Pacific Islands would like us to consider it as I discovered in this article. Would be nice if we did . I don't see it as guest workers and cheap labour. It could be normal workers and temporary labour until we work out the issues related to harvesting fruit and vegetables here. It won't go away if we ignore it and it is a problem.
