Luckiest man alive: doctors rebuild train victim : "'I got a huge lecture from the hospital people. They told me 'you've got no respect for the surgeons who worked on you, the doctors here',' he says. 'They're right, they didn't save my life so I could go back to doing that rubbish.'"
It's a long story to read and it's by no means over, but what a remarkable story it is. Mr. Kerrins has an alcohol addiction and it was being drunk and walking along the trainline which got him into the most astounding recovery which has to be an inspiration to us all. It's a story of guts and courage for all the people were involved. It's about skill, knowledge, patience, faith, expertise and then the human side of it. Dr. Leong and Dr. Leung worked long hard hours to repair 3 severed limbs on this man so he would be able to have prosthetic limbs and use of his arm. Before that a team of surgeons had to stabilise him so the repair work could be done. Before that the paramedics had had the presence of mind to store the severed limbs carefully which is why Mr. Kerrins is alive inspite of the horrific accident. He has pushed himself through the pain and agony of rehabilitation and his capacity to fight his alcohol dependence is being challenged all along the way. He is showing he can learn and he can be better. The whole thing seems awful and yet for the medical teams involved it is a fantastic achievement and for the man it's a wonderful story of humanity.
