The Australian: One in six kids sees net porn
I might as well have my say since this is a family that has to have a computer each and we live for computers amongst other things!@! I have had no concerns with children going on a computer from a young age..but like skiing, ice skating, riding a bike, climbing the play park apparatus, as a parent you need to be there. I have always had a computer in the lounge. My observation is that computers are extremely sociable things. If someone is playing a game, others will show and interest, sometimes children will work on things together as will an adult and child.Visitors become involved and contribute. Collaboration. There will be oohs and aaahs for good sites and erks and yuks for disgusting sites chanced upon . It becomes the stuff of normal living as any event out on the street is. This is their world, and our world. Managing it is what it's about. Same as normal life. It is not different . It is not harder to manage. Like any sport, I believe in getting the kids familiar with technology while they are young. You work with them as an adult. I don't want to be sitting here with my lump of stone and a chisel so I can tell you my thoughts. There are vile people out there. There are opportunistic people out there. There are disgusting sites. I don't want them and I don't want kids to have easy access to them. Same as the stuff in the real world. Like those kids in town bullying people for money. Action, people, take action. You have a whole array of people to access and complain to. You have email, SMS, phones. COMPLAIN. Tell people you don't like it. I have been on and on about spam and pornography on the Net. People can chose..that's fair, but I do not want to be opted in. I do not subscribe to co option, so I never miss an opportunity to share my values and point of view with others. Some of them are in the position to bring about some fair and reasonable changes...but don't stop kids using the Net because vile creatures roam the super highway. Give them the strength and tools to manage until someone in charge, who was elected to govern you, takes responsibility.
