Scribe Fire

I am doing something wrong. I cannot get one of my own pictures to post. I can drag and drop from Net pages and that is so easy. Apart form that , this programme is a doddle and has some really useful features...like you can open it in a split screen, a tab or a new window. Then the editing and republishing is a breeze.I just need to getting posting pictures licked.I could so do with being on a tropical island right now!!

Opinion Poll

My last opinion poll was the most used on my site ever. Lots of people voted on it....three times as many as usual and over half of my visitors. This current one has put most people in the steak and chips category and not one person has voted for salad! Should I worry? The last poll was about where people would like to live . Overwhelmingly people voted for a tropical island. One voted for the country and a couple for the big city. This gave me pause. So why do we all live in big cities if we'd rather live on a tropical island? I shall construct another poll because this has intrigues me...I know it relates to income. We wouldn't have all those things. Surely not that? Even tropical islands these days have internet access. I could so fancy lolling on the edge of the lagoon right now. I am sick of this cold and wet. Give me warm island breezes any day..and yes, I am here because my job is here and I can't get a job on a tropical island!

Spring Allergies

AdelaideNow... Alert as hayfever season hits early
POLLEN counts in Adelaide are up after a wetter winter and spring will further increase the risk of hay fever and asthma, experts have warned.

You always know you are back in Adelaide because you can't breathe and your nose is stuffed up. Adelaide is notorious for allergic reactions and people refuse to believe us ...and then suffer! When you go away you notice two things...your hair is all soft and beautiful because Adelaide water is so hard and then you can breathe really easily. So yes, we have had a wet winter and it's still raining. We now have allergies to look forward to when we have all been struggling with this foul and vile virus which had had most of us in tow...we can't get rid of it. probably because we don't do cold and wet very well. A lot of people though have been pleased to have the cold and wet after such a hot dry summer. I am not one of them. I like my sunshine. The water is good though.

Teacher Salaries

It is always important to stick to the facts when debates are raging. While we are busy talking about school reforms and teachers don't seem to have been consulted, let's just look at salary comparisons. On one site I was on teachers in Washington were quoted as earning 54 000 AUD. New York teachers were quoted as earning 63 082 AUD. Jerry Moore's school talk seems to have a good breakdown of figures. A British teacher who has taught for five years appears to be able to earn 66 248 AUD. Teach UK has the salary breakdowns. A graduate teacher in Victoria will now earn 51 184 AUD and a teacher in South Australia can earn a maximum of 68 424AUD no matter how long they have taught. The next step would be to look at the conditions..the work expectations, the meeting expectations, the training expectations, the nature of the students. Any reform needs serious and careful thought because education cuts don't heal. I used to see that on the back of cars and thought it was a powerful slogan. Healthcare cuts don't heal either...but that's another story.

Doctor in Trouble

AdelaideNow... Plane lands in paddock, then flips
"The pilot has done a great job in landing the plane safely," Senior Constable Matthew Jenkins said.

We take our flying medical teams a bit for granted and it sounds like the plane is overdue for maintenance if the front wheel snapped off and further put the two medical staff in danger after the doctor actually managed to land his plane which had engine trouble. There have been too many light plane accidents and we need to look at the reasons. The doctor's ability to keep a cool head and manage is obvious...but for the front wheel to snap on top of that must have been far too much to take. The local community sounds absolutely wonderful given the speed with which they rallied along with the local emergency services. These are people who are on the ball.

Life Expectancy Mapping

Being poor kills: WHO | The Australian
The researchers found that a girl born in the African country of Lesotho was, on average, likely to live to 42, but this is less than half the expected lifespan of a girl in Japan (86). In Sweden, the risk of a woman dying during pregnancy and childbirth is one in 17,400, but in Afghanistan the odds are one in eight.

A boy in Calton in Scotland will live 28 years less than if he grew up in a neighbouring suburb and 8 years less than a child who grows up in India. So "civilisation" is creating some real disadvantage and developing nations need to take heed. I want to see a world map. I think we need to deal with this as a planet and visual literacy has a powerful impact. I want this on an interactive map and then we can think of ways and means of creating change to benefit the disadvantaged. One in eight women dying in childbirth is something we can change. As a planet we have the capacity to help each other because we are connected and we have the reouces and infrastructure to shift things around the world quickly. Let's get onto it.

Peter Costello

Brendan Nelson struggles to quell roll-over gaffe | The Australian
The gaffe came after Tony Abbott publicly declared Mr Costello was the Liberal Party's "best political asset".

Peter Costello has a misplaced sense of self importance and we are quite clear about the fact he has had his time in the sun, that he was part of the group we needed to change and that we have no wish to go back to those dark, oppressive times where we couldn't even recognise ourselves. It is why this education push at he moment is getting us a bit tetchy. We voted for change. We wanted and needed change. We have enjoyed returning to ourselves as a people who can think and be involved. All of a sudden we are being told again what we need and what is good for us and it is being pushed at us as hard as the Howard Government pushed through all the stuff which stifled, gagged and suffocated us as a nation. We are angry. Very angry. We wanted change...so seeing Peter Costello believe he is far more important than he actually is and to have him stringing his party along as though he were someone far more important than they, is not sitting well out here. Not even with Labour voters. His nonsense seems to be nothing but manipulation and we don't think he should be treating his party friends like that. We are actually amazed the way he is treating his party members because Brendan Nelson was voted in and his own party is undermining him. So, with Kevin Rudd currently doing a John Howard we are actually appalled at the state of the nation and our political parties because we have worked out WE HAVE NO ONE TO CHOOSE. As it stands Brendan Nelson is dealing with this with a lot of dignity because he is surrounded by people who are not on anyone's side but their own. How he manages is making us admire his capacity to have patience and tolerance....this again, from Labour voters. He is a good match for Kevin Rudd because Malcolm Turnbull blew himself out in a great puff of wind and has lot the plot, Mr. Costello is full of himself and there doesn't appear to be anyone else. Brendan Nelson is there and he is doing his job. He has a brain and he has the capacity to read situations ...and is wonderfully diplomatic because he keeps trying to shine a good light on a party which is a shambles. Don't have a go at him from trying to soften the blow of the peculiar people he is working with.

Teaching Performance

NY schools boss backs move to sack under-performing teachers - ABC News
He has told the program he has had great success from sacking a school's entire teaching staff and starting from scratch.

Good way to get rid of more expensive units and bring in cheaper ones. The schools were redesigned to be smaller schools and they were more successful. I could well imagine that. Haven't teachers been asking for smaller classes and haven't we shut down the small schools? There is a lot more to this than meets the eye and I suspect cost cutting is actually the bottom line. It is being pushed far too hard with no real reason. Our teachers are head hunted overseas. Britain is employing a lot of Australian teachers because they make classrooms work...so the articles have been saying. If you sack whole staffs then you then create a pool of experienced staff you can rehire as casuals. Nifty. Lots cheaper. Our young teachers are going to places like Korea and Africa and some would rather work in volunteer programmes than here. If you can be sacked just like that, it's hardly a bright and shiny future and no incentive for older teachers to stay either. No, I think we need to look deeper. This is being pushed too hard all of a sudden.

Blog Action Day 2008

Children suing schools

Legal cases mount up over schoolyard injuries | The Courier-Mail

CHILDREN are suing schools for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for injuries caused while playing games such as tiggy.

This has gone too far.Litigation lunacy strikes again. Perhaps we should put the children in a pen at break times and maybe toss them a sausage now and then? We'd have to make sure they were tied up so they couldn't move. Schools will soon just be places to house ornaments. If this continues we shall have to close schools and put the children back in parental care for home schooling. I'd hate to see statues in the school yard at break times. Maybe we should just create virtual schools? Can you fall off the web?

Victoria Park Redevelopment

AdelaideNow... War of words over Victoria Park
THE Victoria Park redevelopment and the Adelaide parklands dominated discussion at a Lord Mayoral debate yesterday.

And the day after. And the day after that. This debate has been raging long and hard for nearly a year now. The grand stand plan ground to a grand halt and there was more angry debate. Emotions have run high and the feelings have been aired frankly and at times, quite rudely. Lord Mayor Harbison has just had to take it all on and wade his way through it all. To his credit , he has kept managing it , he has kept moving it forward. Today he was on radio and we have a Victoria Park grand plan to rival all Victoria grand plans. He sounds remarkably happy and calm. Remarkable because he must have taken quite a hammering this past year. So now the horses will be moved and the park will be developed in four quadrants. I'd like to see pictures. It sounds really good and it sounds so much better for those who had purchased the pricey units on East Terrace.Harbison was the one to propose the new grandstand and I think in his head he was thinking about getting Adealide a bit more up there and out there in terms of fancy facilities. He wasn't aware of the furore it would cause...but he has listened, learned and worked through every bit of it. I drive along that part of East Terrace where the grand stand is. It totally blocks views and would be something which would destroy the serenity of that end of town. Given there is a private hospital along there, the new ...brand new, redevelopment plan appears to be much better thought out and will provide us with useable spaces and an opportunity for the Clipsal to be a genuine part of our city instead of the temporary guest it has been.

Scorched

Drama, not doomsday | The Australian
BY Christmas Eve in 2012, no rain has fallen in Sydney for more than 200 days and, despite its new desalination plant, the emerald city has run out of drinking water.

Matthew Warren who wrote this article has hit the nail on the head and it's a really well thought out, interesting piece. To show a tele-feature like this is rather ill conceived. We are trying to forget parched, dried up, burning and bushfire fear. We need healing time and to have this shoved in front of us as daily fare is unforgivable. It is as manipulative as it is thoughtless. It is an attempt to create fear and worry and use the very things which have been worrying us to death as a basis for "'entertainment". Matthew Warren thinks this all out though in his well considered piece and I am glad I read it because I was seeing red. I just think it is so mean and cruel to put this kind of stuff in front of people when summer has been traumatising us and we have just got to the stage where we have got ourselves together. Spooking people like that, messing with their heads, using the things which have pushed them hard and troubled them to amuse them on a Sunday night is absolutely incomprehensible and I wish I lived in Bhutan where national happiness is on the government's agenda.Read this piece by Matthew Warren ....it is far less emotive than mine. I am just beside myself with the stupid and mindless way we are being treated by mass media....and we have to stop it.

Goolwa

Toorale purchase won't fix Murray-Darling | The Australian
But the thrust of the Greens' push remains for a Senate committee to report by the end of September what volume of water could be provided from across the basin to replenish the lower lakes and Coorong at the Murray's mouth.

I don't think anyone believes the purchasing of properties will put much water into the Murray. Certainly not sufficient to bring the flow down this way. The situation in Goolwa needs to be remedied now and they are talking about flooding the area with sea water but protecting the fresh water lakes with barriers. They want water. They need water. Now.... so just get on with it and do it and listen to people. There has been far too much talk and no action and the situation has become an ecological disaster because no one thought to listen to people when they were talking about the way people were using and damming the Murray. The drought has complicated it but people are responsible for this. It's our main river. Our lifeblood. We are the ones who have messed this up because we haven't looked at water use and exploitation along the Murray. Then we have been too slow at getting our technology and better land practices into place. Here is a real chance to haul together, get the experts onboard AND LISTEN TO THEM. There needs to be an inmmediate fix for Goolwa and then the rest of it needs to be resolved ...and maybe without politicians because they just blow moe and more hot air about it. They have been for far too long. We need proper thought and planning not position bargaining. We could impress ourselves if we actually accessed our expertise and used a facilitiative approach.

Breast cancer

Runner ends Sydney-Adelaide trek
Warrant Officer Scott Bradshaw has crossed 1,400 kilometres of three states since he left Holsworthy Barracks in western Sydney.

What a fiancé! It's unbelievable this man ran from Sydney to Adelaide to raise money for breast caner because his fiancée had had breast cancer. This is a very special man and he is obviously very fit but to do a run from Sydney to Adelaide in a month is just amazing...and our weather has been horrible. Lots of warm spas and TLC I should think.

Who decides?

School defends 14-year-old getting pill
"It is the general practitioner who decides what is best for the student and the course of action, not the school."

I am certain there is more to this than has been reported but it all sounds very odd. The girl is 14. It means she is the legal responsibility of her parents.Maybe I am wrong. I'm surprised a nurse would take the girl to a doctor without parental consent. Schools tend to ring on any medical matter, however minor. They tend to be extremely cautious. The doctor then has made a decision and then that appears to be without consulting the parents. Yes, it all has to be kept private so who leaked it to the press? Student welfare is core business and teachers and doctors have a duty of care which is a legal responsibility. As it stands it all seems very peculiar. Were she 16, I'd understand because 16 year olds have more rights. I think this whole thing needs to be clarified or it will worry people unnecessarily.

IT shortage

Australia will face crippling shortage of IT professionals
A report by Australian Computer Society (ACS) released last week showed the shortage could grow by 29 percent by 2010 to over 14,500 full-time positions. This could increase to over 25,000 by 2020.

I thought we were supposed to have all these tech savvy kids? I thought we were supposed to have all these young ones who were whizz bang on a computer? Could do anything and fix anything? The truth maybe out. They are front end users at best and narrow in their use of software and sites. There are adults who are very good on a computer. Know a lot. You only have to be on the Net to know there are a lot of older people who have some impressive skills. I thought SA was supposed to be the IT hub? What happened to that idea?So what is the truth? Where are all these IT people ? Are they working overseas? Are they lacking opportunities in skills development? We need a bit more information and a clearer picture.

Daylight Saving

SA daylight saving to start 3 weeks earlier
Industrial Relations Minister Paul Caica said today daylight saving would start on Sunday, October 5 and run to Sunday, April 5, 2009, a week later than usual.

Thank heavens for that. For a start we'll get longer daylight at the end of the day. I am so over winter and then we'll be in line with the Eastern states and for some reason that makes it easier for us. You get sick of trying to work out who is on what time. In this day and age it's an unnecessary complication. I prefer daylight saving and to have it for longer makes me happy!!!

ScribeFire

ScribeFire

is really is helpful and I have added the RSS feed for the ScribeFire blog to my Bloglines feed and I did it from my ScribeFire window. It has some pretty handy features for publishing and sharing. It lists your blog posts so you can navigate easily to them. On this blog it seems to have decorated my blog with tram tracks...or am I being railroaded? It hasn't done that on my other blog...so it tries to be helpful . The blog gives you updates and they appear to have canvassed user opinions and ideas and that is a great way to go about getting people involved and helping them to move your ideas forward. It's facilitative!! You can use it to gain advertising revenue, but I don't use Paypal or give anyone my tax ID. Safety first , isn't it? Adsense doesn't make you do that. Maybe it's only for America. I haven't had a chance to look in detail. I find it very convenient for blogging and it is so much more this century.

Oh, how odd...I only get tram tracks if I blog about an article. If I don't I am not encased in blue stripes!!! I checked. PayPal and Tax ID are not compulsory fields or requirements.

Editing is soooooo easy....and I have just worked out how to add the tram tracks!!! How clever am I and thanks for the tip!!

Saving the Murray

Emergency inquiry for Murray-Darling
The Senate today voted for a lightning inquiry which has just one month to find a solution to the woes of Australia's biggest river system.

Oh hooray, at last. Action. The time for talk and discussion is past. We need conversations and ideas which will move this whole thing forward because we have been prevaricating for too long. The Howard Govt hummed and hahed...we have been going on and on and on...meanwhile the Murray has been devastated and we have done little. It is our river. It's the lifeblood of our nation and we all need to take responsibility for it. We have been paying a River Murray levy for how long? Indirect tax which we have given in return for a dried up Goolwa and the heritage Coorong under real threat. It is inexcusable. We need to act and we will do anything to help....but we are totally past being treated like fools and played for suckers.

Art

'Prudish' council bans nude artwork entries - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
The artists were told by organisers their pieces were inappropriate for an exhibition which was likely to be viewed by children.

Oh dear. We do sound a bit silly here in Adelaide. The human body has long been the subject of works of art for centuries. People grew up with bodies surrounding them in paintings, sculptures, drawings, art classes. People still do. Bodies are bodies. We all have them. Children know they are there. It is true we are currently in the process of defining what is art and what is pornography and it's good to have that debate because media images have muddied the waters and we do need to have a clear idea of what we mean. Come down south and grab a few vine leaves.

Child Abuse

'Worryingly poor' understanding of child sex abuse - Local News - News - General - The Canberra Times
A survey has revealed that the average Australian has limited knowledge of abuse and the circumstances in which it occurs, a finding the Melbourne researchers say could explain why so few court cases result in a conviction.

I think this is true. We all care about it and want to do something about it. Part of the problem is that families cannot deal with it. We haven't found a way of getting those sorts of conversations going in families so that they can bring it out into the open. It is happening so much and appears to have been happening for so long that we have ingrained ways of "dealing" with it. I think families have a conspiracy of silence. I think people would find it hard to confront the abuser. I think also the child becomes confused with the silence and mixed messages. Then out here, in society, there is a lot of sympathy but we aren't being very practical. It is a "thing". We don't like it and we are horrified and that may not actually be the best way of dealing with child abuse. Maybe we just need to harden up for a while and get a better plan together for the home front and then stop making it such a thing out here so kids can just be freed from this and have a chance to normalise. It shouldn't have escaped notice that most people cannot talk about it until they are much older. That just lets it carry on.Australia is actually very good at dealing with tough stuff in a very practical, can do way. We need a plan....and a campaign.

Millennium mayhem

'Millennium kids' disrupting schools: primary principals - ABC News
A new report has found that increasing numbers of Australian primary school children are inattentive, disruptive, undermotivated and disengaged.

Am I surprised? No. Don't you get the feeling in 2008 that we have changed? Don't you get the feeling this year that the world is reformatting into a more technological new age world? Videos are common. Facebook is huge. I bet more kids are on the Net than watching TV. DVDs are probably more popular than television as well. We have our iPhones, our MP3 players. We have naked DSL. These kids are growing up in a different world. Yet...we still have fixed hours, all of us, and at work and probably at school as well we have far less access to adequate technology that we now see as common place. When you talk to people , you find they have a lot of interests these days. The Net is not all crap. It is not all bad You Tube clips. You Tube has good stuff too. I expect these kids go about heir lives differently and books and pens don't mean a lot. When did I last resort to pen and paper and I got brought up on the stuff? When did I last post a letter? When did I sit and watch the news? I tend to revolve around the Net. I contact people online. I watch things online. My world has changed and I am a lot happier because of it. It means I can do what I want when I want to and it means I can get up and do other things. I find it hard to sit and sit and sit. I find it hard to work the hours I am told to work when the stuff I have at home is far more efficient than my workplace stuff. I accomplish more in half an hour at home than I do in 2 hours at work. The article also refers to "helicopter parents." Brilliant expression. Brilliant. So, don't these parents have to go to work? Surely they are not so self absorbed they think the world revolves around the needs of their child? We need to hear what is being said. If children don't appear to be sleeping and eating properly and if their manners are lacking...then the parents aren't doing a good job of regulating lifestyle. Why is that?

Scribe Fire

Forget my dummy spit from before. I have just downloaded Scribe Fire. That I just posted within minutes attests to the fact I can get it up and running easily. So far it has some cool features...like I can see my posts appear. I can work split screen. I can drag and drop and put Shaun pictures everywhere

if I want to! My Photo

AND drag pictures off pages ..which I cannot do indiscriminately, of course. I need to work on the lay out...but it more than compensates for Just Blog It loss. This blogging tool is very cruisy. It has a You Tube button and some good writing and publishing buttons. I am sure you'll see me work wonders with it.

And I have just re edited this post in a twinkling. I love twinkling!!!

Obama Barack

US authorities are investigating whether four people arrested
in Denver have been plotting to shoot Democrat presidential candidate
Barack Obama during his acceptance speech.

I have been thinking about this. The more so because when Barack Obama was in the running with Hilary Clinton, I wanted America to be able to vote in a woman. France just couldn't do it and maybe they are kicking themselves now. At the time people here were saying they wouldn't vote in a woman because they thought America just couldn't do that. Nor can we for that matter. Women need to do something about that and their image as the ultimate leader. Somehow they are just not credible to the voters when push comes to shove. But then there was talk that if Barack Obama got in then there would be people in America who would find it intolerable to have a black person as their head of state. We were feeling very dismayed and sad about that and then someone dared to say, anyway, they'll just assassinate him if they think he has too much power. It seemed very cynical. It seemed that in this day and age we were only skin deep and couldn't take a long hard look at ourselves and make some decent changes to who we were. Oddly enough, or perhaps ironically, it is Barack Obama who represents that breath of fresh air and that capacity for us to change the world. So here we are at that all too well worn stereotypical image of the US killing its own if they don't like them. It's a terrible overseas image to have. There are over 300 million Americans and a lot of them are like me and you...but the country has some strange public images...so this "plot" just falls right in with what people expect to hear and it's a crying shame. That man deserves better and so does his country.

Blog it!!

And read that as an expletive. Firefox has updated to version 3 and the best blogging tool ever...Just Blog It...is not compatible with it. I blogged before Just Blog It and I shall blog after Just Blog It...but this is ridiculous. I hate updates which take out the good things so you are launched back into the past. I had a quick look but I cannot seem to find a blogging tool for version three. POT!! BLOG IT!!! Remind me not to update Firefox on my laptop. At least reminder Fox was left untainted.

Bachelors Galore

revealed - our bachelor hotspot : “The small suburb of Woodville West is where you will find Adelaide's largest concentration of bachelors..”

We need an interactive map! I had heard it is becoming hard to find each other because people are so busy working and have so many commitments. This article provides some really useful information and even the people living in the area found it helpful. These are great demographics. Not the usual sort which leave you cold. These ones put a bit of a sparkle in your eye and seem to be the sort of thing which encourage an enthusiastic approach to life. It is what we need. Help...and fun!

Goolwa

Buckets of sea water thrown into ailing Murray : "'I think we've done more today with one bucket of water for each person than the politicians have done in the last two years to try to save this river and this town,' he said."So what do you blog about when the Olympics are over? Something closer to home. Something close to our hearts. Goolwa. What has happened to Goolwa because of our drought and then the lack of capacity to manage the Murray River, is heart breaking. We have been concerned about it. You cannot grow up in Adelaide, you cannot live long term in Adelaide and not feel for Goolwa. We have spent our childhood and teen years there. We have friends there. Our families might have holiday homes there. Our families might have holidayed there. We all know Goolwa and a lot of people live there now. Why? They like messing around on the river. It's calm, peaceful and a place to get away from it all. It is scenic beyond belief and the home of the Coorong and Lake Alexandrina. The home of our wildlife. People have boats there and they cannot sail them. They have been left high and dry. It was coming. We could see it. No one planned and no one helped. The locals are doing what they can to bring this to our attention and rightly so. But we think about Goolwa on a daily basis and we have talked about it all through the hot , dry summer. There isn't any water. There used to be a river. There has been talk of building barriers to protect the lakes and the Coorong. Water is being taken from lake Alexandrina to save Lake Albert. We need more. We need those barriers so the bottom end can be flooded with sea water and people can get back to mucking about on the river. Goolwa needs help and now, that's for sure.

Five charged with heroin trafficking

Five charged with heroin trafficking : "Police have charged five people over an alleged heroin trafficking operation between Adelaide and Melbourne."

Good. We need to keep this up as a community because drugs bring us all down and dealing with the impact of drugs is not pretty at all.

Sore heads for partying Aussie athletes

Sore heads for partying Aussie athletes : "The Australian Olympic Committee said they had not had to bail out any athletes and 'as far as we know' all had safely returned to the village."

If they've been off the leash and played up...they need to be like that. They've worked hard. They have done really well. We have a lot to be proud of. They will be under pressure one way or another when they come back...so they do need to cut loose. If they have done that safely, then that is how it should be. They are in a good position now to be instrumental in a change in our nation. A lot of people will be looking up to them . They've worked so hard...I hope they partied hard because it'll be back in the saddle soon and their training schedules are gruelling!!!

NSW Premier backs plan to withhold welfare for truancy

NSW Premier backs plan to withhold welfare for truancy : "The measure will first apply to six communities in the Northern Territory and two in Western Australia.

'It's another measure to ensure that parents live up to their responsibilities,' Mr Iemma told reporters today.

'It is an important legal obligation - you can't flout the law."

Absolutely. Our children need to be in school. OUR children. Everyone's children. It is a legal obligation for all Australian families but it is also something which is highly desirable in order to keep us productive and competitive. Attendance is a must. I noticed while I was on a random site the other night that some American schools advertise their attendance on the school's home page. They put up what percentage of attendance they have that day and then ask the question...is your child at school? This assumes parents and the general public go to these sites and are aware. It also assumes people care about these things. Teachers cannot teach classes where students are missing and missing students get knowledge gaps and then we have to invent expensive bridging programmes later on to create a viable work force. This is double the expenditure for us. There has to be a method whereby we get serious about attendance. Developing early attendance patterns is desirable. We need to pick non attenders up early in their education so then it doesn't become a problem later on down the track where , I could well imagine, some big child is telling their parent they are not going to school. If we target early education then 5 years from now we shall have proper attendance. It cannot go on like this. You often see kids out of school and they cannot all be on welfare and they cannot all be on excursions. We have to make non attendance unpleasant and attendance desirable.

Bye Bye Beijing

Bye bye Beijing and for those who look for a defining moment...I think they have missed the point. Beijing was about all the athletes and what they bring to us and the world. It was about hundreds of athletes who had assembled to bring us their best...so there were lots of moments which were awesome, brilliant and just unbelievably inspiring thanks to all the excellent athletes who had come to Beijing to give it their all. There was some real inspiration to be drawn from these games. They were well organised, huggie feelie, friendly, warm. People were open in their compassion and praise. They were quick to congratulate or commiserate. They were very human and lovely . The visuals were stunning. The birdsnest and water cube were unique. Thank you. I have loved these Olympics.

Yoohoo Yahoo!

Yoohoo, Yahoo! I want to win the teacup. You don't even have the teacup as a prize. Seriously. I am dead set serious. Do you know how much tea I drink? I am famous for it. I could just see myself with that lovely cup sipping my tea as I blog. It's a cheerful, happy Yahoo cup. I want one!!Can't you at least put it as a prize so I can try and win it?!

Television ad seeks to shame male hoons

Television ad seeks to shame male hoons : "'The 'Speeding. No one thinks big of you' campaign has not only broken through the youth barrier but has been embraced by popular youth culture,' Mr Watsford said."

That's the thing isn't it? Most of us suffer and put up with unreasonable behaviour because the few who are dominating the pack have been given the power to do so. So you have to deflate their image and reinstate the power of the people who care about each other. If it saves lives, helps communities thrive, brings people together and stops people killing themselves and others...then this is the way to go. We should not be frightened of dealing with the nasties. Pinkie power!

Yabla Clic » French Immersion TV

Yabla Clic » French Immersion TV: "Yabla Clic is an online video magazine for French learners who wish to improve their French skills. Authentic French videos include television programs, music videos, interviews, documentaries, and travel."

I rest my case. The world is making it simple to learn languages because online you can gather communities of native speakers to help those trying to learn. The Oz Traveller site I blogged about yesterday had some lovely free sites to help you learn languages, but the trend now is to get the online communities together to create the learning environment for languages. They are there because they are needed in 2008 and beyond. They are there because they will make money since we need these infopreneurial and linguistic skills to drive our civilisation forward. So which language are you?

Andreas Thorkildsen

Andreas Thorkildsen: "Won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, throwing a then-personal-best 86.5 meters in the second round of the competition."

And now he has won a gold medal at the Beijing Games. He is brilliant and yet, inspite of his strong web presence, there is no photo of him on his profile. At 26 , he is not only a very talented athlete, he is totally at home in our technological environment and has a good online presence. I was so glad he won. I wondered what on earth was going on with the javelin throwers. They were full of bizarre antics and behaviours to say the least then out came Andreas...who behaved in a totally normal way and just threw the javelin without all the stuff and nonsense...and he won. I am glad he won. He was awesome!!

Mitcham caps return with diving gold

Mitcham caps return with diving gold 2008 Beijing Olympic Games : "The former trampolinist quit the sport in 2006 but returned midway through 2007 with a fire in his belly to become Australia's third Olympic diving gold medallist."

And thank heavens he did come back. My sister, who is less into the Olympics than I am ,rang me up early this morning just to let me know about Matthew Mitchum. She said he was brilliant. She was completely excited and thrilled she had stayed up to watch the diving. We had been out to dinner and we were watching the Oympics and then I came home. She had gone back to watch more, so my enthusiasm had rubbed off. I wasn't particularly delighted with an early call on a Sunday morning, but for Matthew Mitcham to have my sister gabbling on about it all in such an excited way, gave me the knowledge that he must indeed be special and it is this which is important. We don't know many of these athletes and then they come out of nowhere and inspire us, enthral us and delight us.We value their brilliance because it helps us to thrive. It is just fantastic.

Career Building

Career Education: Foreign languages: "Career builders seeking to improve their careers should notice that this is an increasingly globalized world in which markets have become really transnational. Foreign languages are no longer just a plus: they have become a real must even if your native language is English."

We still don't get it in Australia. We have got to get people to be bilingual and multilingual or we are going to be hard pressed to survive in the multinational, global market. We do actually have a lot of bilingual Australians but monolingual Australians think that other people should be learning and talking languages. Once Australians get going they pick up languages very quickly. It's a headset problem we need to address pronto.

Oz Traveller
provides some great help on learning languages.

The People's Quiz

BBC - The People's Quiz : "Now’s your chance to get ahead. Do you have gaps in your knowledge or do you know more than you think you do?"

I am a sucker for quiz questions in spite of not doing terribly well. I just like doing quizzes and questionnaires. i like answering questions! I think it's because I get a chance to learn as I am doing them and the result really doesn't bother me. I just like knowing things. There are quizzes galore here to try your hand at and if you are good at quizzes they would be a good training ground. Surprisingly I am not at all fond of quiz programs. We don't get this one here but we have quiz programmes of our own which are popular. I hate them. They drive me crazy. They are too drawn out. I prefer paper quizzes or quizzes on the net. I love Net quizzes...you usually get instant feed back.

Shaun the Sheep

I do. I do love Shaun the Sheep. He's a character who never fails to bring a smile to my face. He lightens me up. We all need a character which makes us smile. I have been a Wallace and Grommit fan for a long time. In our family it is a bit of a problem because we have the staunch followers of all things Wallace and Grommit and then those who cannot bear to watch it and don't get it and hate it. Always good for a loud and lively discussion. How could you not like Shaun?!

Steve Hooker

Gold medal win yet to sink in: Hooker 2008 Beijing Olympic Games : "Sleepless Steve Hooker says becoming the first Australian male to win an Olympic track and field gold medal in 40 years still hasn't sunk in."

Steve Hooker has just created history but he has had us all sitting on the edge of our chairs. The last chance man and yet there is nothing accidental about him. I got drawn into watching him in the heats because he was doing a lot of careful preparation before the jump. You could see the mental preparation and methodical thinking he had. You could see him centring himself and then he took off and his pants seemed too big for him, I thought he would miss...and he did . He hit his chest on the bar just by a fraction. The second attempt was similar but it was his knees and then the third jump was just plain awesome and he got through to the final. It is as though he is calibrating himself when he goes through the first 2 attempts. It is a way of measuring his performance and then the third shot at the pole vault is just magical. I have been delighted to learn about these unknown athletes. We didn't even know Steven Hooker and yet he is representing us...and winning gold for us. I like him. I like his open , fuss free approach. I like how he takes nothing for granted but does all within his power to succeed...and when he jumps, it is just beautiful to watch. There is a real grace about him.

Shaun the Sheep

Alexis Vastine

Ah, non. Non. C'est trop. Je vais en pleurer. Si je suis mouillé c'est que mes rêves se trouvent gâchés. Trop c'est trop. Ah non, ça c'est diabolique.

Poor thing. Lost his match and yes, it just all overfows sometimes. What I have liked and valued in these games is the way people have freely shared their warm emotions. Coaches have genuinely hugged their protégés, team mates have hugged their friends out of joy or in commiseration. These have been warm human moments and the hugs, support and human touch have played a great role in these games. The way in which athletes and their trainers have supported each other in such a lovely, affectionate way tells me most of us are genuinely nice, caring people and like to be that way. There has been nothing contrived about this affection and it's been nice to see that kind of human warmth.

Woman gets new heart valve through groin

Woman gets new heart valve through groin: "'With this new technology, we can offer more patients a better prognosis, sparing them surgery and a months-long recovery period, which all huge benefits, especially if you're in your 80s or 90s.'"

Even if you are not in your 80s and 90s. I nursed a family member over Christmas and the New Year who had had an aortic valve and a mitral valve replaced. Surviving the operation is the first thing. Then there are so many tricky things to do with blood viscosity and pressure, then the healing of the leg from the bypass...and trying to deal with the healing of the rib cage. It is all very demanding stuff on the body. I did learn that it's important to be there for someone who has had open heart surgery and I learned that people can be so courageous. To replace the valve through the groin would cut out so much pain and healing time. It would radically reduce the strain on the body and the strain on those looking after the person. This is a fantastic breakthrough which is so inline with our millennium because it is so much less traumatic all round.

Ban Aboriginal dole until 21

Ban Aboriginal dole until 21, Noel Pearson pleads : "'Young people should be presented with two options: you either earn or learn. (Welfare payments) should not be an option for people under 21.'"

Wouldn't be such a bad option to consider for all our kids. Maybe we need to look at it because young kids should be in the learning phase of their life and they need to learn some responsibility too. If they do not want to be at school then they need to have a job or training to go to. It doesn't matter what the job is. Everything will teach them something. We may have a shortage of jobs which would suit them though, so before we go down that path we need to know there are viable options to school if they don't want to be there. Let's face it...not everyone is good at sitting on their bottom. Some would be happy just to do until they find their way. I think we need to seriously look at virtual and online learning communities too.

Australian Angie Darby 33rd in pentathlon after two events

Australian Angie Darby 33rd in pentathlon after two events : "Ms Cordaro said Darby told her she stopped because her goggles had come loose and water had flooded into her eyes."

She fought for her place on the team and that appears to have been a very emotional and intense run up to the Olympics. She is 20 years old and competing in 5 different , very demanding events. It sounds like she is swamped. I haven't seen the running event where she stopped. She may well have been disorientated. She may not be able to process all she has been though and everything she has to be able to do to compete. Most people would have lifted the goggles off as they ran and maybe cleaned them on something but I don't suppose the brief outfits allow for the handy hankie! She sounds as though she is not coping and she probably needs to be helped through this and if she does badly, she does badly.Support wouldn't go astray until we get to the bottom of this. Trauma can make you very vague and unpredictable and that is how she is behaving, as though she were traumatised..

Enviro-cool sneakers for school

Enviro-cool sneakers for back to school - Green Living Online: "This season's selection offers some of the hippest sneakers that are easy on the eye as well as the pocketbook and Planet Earth."

Green shoes! What a great idea for saving the planet and something we can all do. Even given the fact we are a school uniform nation I am certain there is a way we can look at uniforms, school or not, and come up with environmentally friendly alternatives and clothes and footwear we can recycle. That would truly be manageable and a way of delivering a message to companies that we want to wearing things which help us and our planet. Some environmentally friendly clothing is very expensive, but we need to look at that too because it should not be a trendy option for the well lined wallet. I'd really like to see this happen and starting on the shoes would be and easy option because it would remind us to be aware of our carbon footprints.

And until we get our carbon friendly feet into action, in the meantime you can use your lunch box banana peel to polish your shoes!!

What to wear when it's raining

What to wear when it's raining : "We also saw a deluge of fashion clashes: StayDry macs with sandals, cagoules with culottes, bare legs with jumpers."

We need this help. We need to see the lighter side of this weather and just get ourselves through it. We are mainly black woollen coats, but we do have people in shorts and T shirts...why??? It's wet and freezing. We have gone big on scarves. Some are very stylish and draped tastefully but many are just big warm woolly lumps of random colour around the neck. We have gone for socks and "ballet' shoes too...not a good look and others have been wearing strong, sturdy shoes. Umbrellas have lost ground since they were blown inside out a couple of weeks back. Hats have become thick , woolly domes on our heads with or without the dangling tassles down the side. Hoodies are nowhere near as popular as I would have thought but they have been associated with undesirable activities so that has brought them out of fashion in the mainstream. Ditto black tea cosies on your head. Hats on the whole are not popular here because we cannot decide on a hat which is association free. Just a hat...without a lifestyle attached. Jackets are popular, but they are grey windcheater material with graffiti type designs and they look messy. We are basically grey, blue and there are bits of chocolate and the odd splash of red .It actually would be interesting to see how we pan out at the moment because we are just chucking on what is keeping us warm!!!

Uma Thurman Is Open to Having More Children

Uma Thurman Is Open to Having More Children : "Uma Thurman says she's open to the possibility of having more children."

I am sure she is. So are a lot of women. So have a lot of women felt that way in the past and I am sure many women will feel that way in the future. Riveting news. I can hardly contain myself....and do you know what? A lot of women are open to a lot of things.

Cold snap could bring snow

Cold snap could bring snow to Adelaide Hills and hail to city: "HOPEFULLY you packed your winter woolies and a raincoat today - a cold snap could lead to snow in the Adelaide Hills and hailstorms in the city."

We did pack hats, gloves, scarves and coats. We even wore them and we are still frozen stiff. It's been cold, wet ...freezing ..... and we are all shivering and miserable because we live in Adelaide and we are used to blue skies and sunny days. We are so grateful for the rain and we have been waxing lyrical about rainwater tanks, green gardens and rain gauges. We are worried about the Murray. We are really worried about Goolwa and we are just too cold for comfort. Heating costs have been brought out into the open. Some people cannot afford to heat their homes adequately and this is scandalous in our city....in this cold and miserable winter weather. We know it's winter. We are doing our best...but like daisies, we are going around with our little petals folded and our heads hanging down.

Officials get knickers in a twist

Officials get knickers in a twist over hockey jockeys : "Kevin Marr was ordered to watch the must-win match against Germany from the grandstand as punishment for three players wearing black undies beneath white shorts in an earlier match."

Well, heaven forbid we should transgress colour coding at such an elite level of sport. If they want the rule then there have to be choices of underwear available for purchase onsite and there have to be reasonable gaps between tournaments.Other than that , players need to be furnished with a rainbow of underwear choices.

Survey reveals parents' drug fears

Exclusive: Survey reveals parents' drug fears: "But the report also suggests many parents are equally familiar with drugs: 49 percent of parents admit to having smoked marijuana, while 14 percent have taken other drugs."

Knowledge is a good thing in adults because they have to steer their children through life's perils . We need confident, well informed parents who are not easily intimidated. I think this is a good finding from that survey and something we can turn into a real strength. Ignorance is the thing which allows negatives to grow and take over. People who are well informed can plan and think better and have better access to resources and lines of help. Team effort , folks.

Recall for garlic bread that turns blue

AdelaideNow... Recall for garlic bread that turns blue: "Capalaba-based AGB International has recalled 13 brands of its garlic bread, including Black & Gold, Homebrand and You'll Love Coles after consumers found the garlic turned blue when baked in the oven."

Blue? And blue mouths? Surely this is a joke? Certainly mayhem which is unnatural. I cannot stand food tampering.

Watching them watching us

Unleashed: Watching them watching us: "Perhaps we deserve the intrusion of Street View. Perhaps this home invasion will make us rethink the uploading of our secrets."

Working things out retrospectively is never easy. An ounce of prevention, isn't it? This is well worth a read because Google Streetview has been the talk of the town here and some people see it as no worse that a car driving past , some see it as sinister and others think it is going to put us at risk. We are having everything tagged, nailed and documented. We are being scrutinised and coded faster than we can think about it. We are pushed into divulging names, numbers and addresses on web sites for registration. We are told we have to give this information for our protection. Then we find out we are scammed, phished or sucked in in some way. We are photographed and our homes are photographed. We have no say in this. We have asked for no say in this. We have just blithely carried on in a very powerless fashion. It is bullying. We were not asked. Nothing was negotiated. The implications are worrying because we are not allowed to be our own private selves any more and anyone is entitled to our information.

Plane caught in powerlines

See video of plane caught in powerlines : "A MAN and his wife have been left dangling upside down for two hours after their light plane became entangled in high voltage power lines."

I was going to say it was shocking, but no, I can't. It happened in Germany and you can see the footage from this link. Are they okay?

Red Bull may boost heart disease risk

Red Bull may boost heart disease risk : "DRINKING just one can of the popular Red Bull energy drink may be enough to increase dramatically the risk of developing life-threatening blood clots, even in healthy young people."

Last time I was a the petrol station there were two car loads of young guys obviously off on a fishing jaunt. They were cheerful, happy, having fun and just being mates...but as they paid for the petrol they were all buying doughnuts and Red Bull. Not just one lot...lots. Caffeine has a big impact on your heart. It just does. When you are older you can really notice it but these young guys may be oblivious to its effects or just think it keeps them more awake or alert. Some kids drink about 8-10 bottles a day. That is way to much. I really wonder why manufacturers think to do this to people and then say it's their choice. Why make stuff like that in the first place? trouble is , it has a coolness factor and the only way to combat that is with the honest truth. Clear, unadulterated truth can't be argued with. Apart from the effects discussed in the article caffeine can give you an ectopic heart beat and that can potentially lead to arrhythmia. Let me see...Red Bull...or heart disease? Red Bull or cardiovascular problems? they need to go and look at some heart patients and look at the reality of recovering from heart surgery.I think the researchers need to get the facts and then the truth needs to be given to the public and then I should like to think we now live in an age of accountability. We have been off the hook with humanity for too long.

Search for kids who slept in dumpster

Search for kids who slept in dumpster : "'They have cleaned the bin and placed a mattress in it.

'The bin was always neat and tidy and the bed is usually made perfectly."

The 9 year old is probably the one making the beds and cleaning the bin. That makes her an incredibly responsible young girl if she is looking after the 4 and 6 year old boys like that. Presumably they are not at school. Presumably they need to eat? A packet of chips...was that bought? Surely the parents would let police know if they are using it as a cubby house? Surely now it's public someone would recognise these children who seem to be quite distinctive? They have to get hungry and they have to eat. Surely they will be found and looked after?

Oil costs spell doom for suburbs

Oil costs spell doom for suburbs: "Residents and businesses in the outer suburbs of Australian cities will leave in droves if oil prices stay high, a new report predicts."

We could all squash into the cities and pile up on top of one another and become like lots of other places in the world. Is that what we want? In Australia you always had space to spread out and breathe but maybe we are not creating sufficient money for others that way. Maybe we do need the inner city squish so real estate can draw optimum prices for smaller amounts of land.We could invest in better public transport and we could look at creating regional centres and hubs. We tend to be very narrow in our thinking and in the end it will come down to us and what we want. The Australian lifestyle is about living unhampered with room to move but places are becoming increasingly crowded. Do we like it? Do we want it? We are a car dependent nation and we need to look at more efficient transport...but that takes thinking and planning. I'm still waiting for TGV type trains to connect our main cities so we can do the intercity by rail...I'd love it!!

Video games not all bad

Video games not all bad, psychologists say : "Students who played violent games were more hostile, less forgiving, and more apt to view violence as normal, than peers who played non-violent games."

It's all in the mix and the balance and I think the balance has been towards heavy duty , violent games and some would argue they do not create violent people, but there have been more and more statistics saying otherwise. Those who argue that violent games don't make violent people need to be heard because maybe we are missing something and their is always the possibility they stop people from being violent. It's the brainless, gratuitous violence we need to deal with in all its forms. Games tend to be a narrowly focussed market and we are only starting to get some better options as other people are allowed to market their gaming ideas. Games need to be broad ranged in their scenarios and less predictable. One thing I did learn from reading a gaming magazine recently was that gamers are seriously into computing and technology. In that sense they provide a group of people who trial new ways of doing things and get the cutting edge technology up and running. They provide a core group of people who are very at home in a technological environment and we need to capitalise on that since technology is not going away. It's the way we are going. I just wish games could provide more variety and maybe then more people would become involved and the market would adapt to a wider audience.Games could be used to improve all sorts of skills and could be developed for all sorts of target audiences. They can be very motivating and motivational as well as having the capacity to develop targeted skills.I guess games will be as limited as the imaginations and machinations which create them.

Drawing the line

I've just decided I don't want a big bottom in pink lace undies staring at me when I am trying to be on the Net. There's a time and place for big bottoms in pink lace and my computer screen isn't it. How can I read the news?!

49er result left blowing in the wind

49er result left blowing in the wind : "The Australian 49er team of Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin ended in fifth place overall after capsizing twice near the finish line."

We watched this and it was amazing. The sailors did not give up and you could see the seas were menacing and everyone was toppling over...and getting their boats up again. The fortitude and courage were astounding. The commentators get the gold medal in commentating , though. They were so spontaneous, so natural and it was hilarious because they were feeling so honestly for the competitors and their reactions were totally normal but not as straight laced as commentators are supposed to be. In all fairness I think the competition needs to be rerun..they didn't get a chance to sail...but the commentators certainly took off and showed us how to commentate the most remarkable set of circumstances in what for me is an Olympic classic.

Snowsill turns tragedy into triumph

Snowsill turns tragedy into triumph : "'Lessons learned through life are there not necessarily for good or bad reasons, you just have to take them as they are and move on,' she reflected."When Emma Snowsill has finished being the star triathlete she is, she needs to start hiring herself out as a motivational speaker. She is so amazing and the quotes from her in this article are the clear, potted wisdom we all need "to get over it". She is right. A lot of people are doing it hard. A lot of people have tragedy in their lives, but this lady knows how to put it all together and really come out on top. This is her life and she is making the absolute most of it and encouraging others to get in there and go for broke when it comes to living. Were it not for her win we might never have heard form her. She is so inspiring and that's the good thing about these games. We are actually getting a chance to hear from more athletes and what they think and how they do it. The Australians do not lack guts. Our athletes have to really put themselves out there and they have a good way of dealing with things. Our cyclists have been hit hard and yet we still have competitors in there doing such a fantastic job and not even trying to make excuses and then when an athlete wobbles and hits the wall, somehow we manage to get them back up on their feet and fighting for victory again. The stories of courage are very moving.

Olympic Dream

It's great when someone really talented gets to realise their dream. Michael Phelps got his 8 gold medals...and he's worked hard for them. Well done and enjoy them!

Marriage pre-nups now cover getting fat

Marriage pre-nups now cover getting fat: "Domestic duties, social activities and, in the most extreme cases, punishments for infidelity and weight gain, are being outlined in detailed and binding legal agreements, lawyers say."

Ah well, it's all about image, heh? Should make for good relationships if they are only skin deep and if lawyers have to negotiate the terms of endearment.

Rowing

I have really enjoyed the rowing this Olympics. The rowers seem to be good looking, easy going and very relaxed people. Makes a change from the jiggling and fidgeting at the beginning of track events. I know they must have to jiggle and fidget for a reason but it's not a good look. The rowers are relaxed, confident , calm and smile very easily. Our teams have been doing really well and are a tribute to the guts and determination they have shown to improve to this gold winning level. Our team of four might have won too if the Brits hadn't just flown across the water in the race to the finish! That was a pretty exciting end how the Brits just took off like that but I was really concerned for the blond one who looked like he just couldn't breathe at the end and looked like he was really distressed. They had put so much on the line to get there. I am glad our teams did well and that they shared their happiness with us.

Grant Hackett

Yes, it was written on his face and it must have disappointed him because he probably wasn't expecting the Tunisian to come out at 1100 metres and powerhouse past him and the Canadian. The Canadian is a fantastic young swimmer for the 1500 and the good thing is we can now fill the pool with guys who can swim the 1500. It used to be hard to get people to do that. But like a few races in the Olympics, Oussama just came out from that spot and raced to the finish with his gold winning strategy and that seems to be a popular tactic. Grant was probably thinking about the Canadian, like we were and he was matching him well. A silver is a great win. He swam beautifully but these Olympics have been full of surprises and that is a feature which should not let these athletes think badly about themselves. Grant's swim was just amazing and his medal win more than deserved.

The Dark Knight

I wasn't going to go and see this, but I don't regret accepting the opportunity to see it when it came up. I knew once we had the cobalt blue opening it was going to be the heavy metal, headbanger approach and sure enough the paramilitary Batman and the total immersion in boys toys and explosions and hard headed, thoughtless violence was there. Tough people with their arms full of ironmongery and their mouths full of threats. So then I wondered why you would actually make a film showcasing the brutal, unrelentingly hostile and cruel side of human nature. Why would it be worthy of an art form? The chaos versus social conciousness was explored well in the film. If it's a comic book character then what would they be dealing with in our world...maybe all that ironmongery and amoral treatment of others? There was certainly plenty to think about and certainly an opportunity to ponder why we have not grown as a human race since we got hold of weapons. The film more that shows what a veneer our so called civilisation is. But the thing which had me totally spell bound was Heath Ledger. I have never seen the villain out perform the main character. Health Ledger's capacity to be the Joker is extraordinary right down to the dyskenesia. He was totally and utterly brilliant and eclipsed everyone and the whole film. Batman couldn't be anything without a lot of computer assistance. The thing I really did like about Batman though, was the effect of getting him to be so much like a bat in his movements. That was really well done and was a good addition to any Batman film ...one which has been missing. Not a film for kids, I don't think, and I am not sure a lot of people would be able to stomach it because it runs you right to the wire with its daring and challenges. I just cannot believe how complex Heath Ledger made the role of the Joker and he probably found it quite disturbing to play the part...but he was in a league of his own and we got to see just how incredibly talented he was before life conspired to take another gift from us.

Facebook takes over MySpace's world

Facebook takes over MySpace's world : "'By increasing the site's relevance to local markets through local language interface translation, the site is now competing strongly or even capturing the lead in several markets where it had a relatively minor presence just a year ago.'"

MySpace is very gluey to all accounts. Even kids are finding it a swamp, but it still serves a purpose for some people. I'm into my 3rd week on Facebook and I cannot believe how quickly it picks up contacts for you...people you have lost contact with over the years. It's a nice feeling and Facebook has a happy feel about it. I am looking for a blog app which can do a bit better than 140 characters! Can you imagine me blogging in 140 characters??? That's a sentence and a short one at that. Facebook does rely on short, sharp and shiny though and it's how it maximises contact...and makes it very efficient. I practically don't email now.I am looking for some more grown up apps. It's more about what they think will appeal to young people and it's very limited and limiting like that. It could be so much better with a bit of thought and coding. I haven't found a good book app either....not sure if that is because I run Firefox. I am waiting for Facebook to grow up and maybe get some choices in for different age groups and levels of interest. Not everyone is frothy and daft...but the apps I have I am more than happy with and look forward to a decent news feed. I can see what they are trying to do by keeping it lightweight but this is where some better planning and coding needs to come into play because it is hugely useful. I think it's coming of age. As strange as I found it at first I have to confess now it has fantastic potential to revolutionise how we make contact and how we work with online groups.

Sexual bullying rife at work

AdelaideNow... Sexual bullying rife at work: "A quarter of harassers were superiors, a third employers, and a third co-workers. One in 10 involved the threat of consequences if sexual demands were not met."

Workplace bullying is rife for the two main reasons cited in most workplace bullying information sites : constant change and multiple bosses. It opens the whole thing up to lack of structure, lack of protocol and lack of responsibility. It is worse because psychological abuse can be played out until people break down physically or mentally and it looks as though they "just can't take the job any more." It is not always as overt as sexual bullying. It is often as simple as making someone's job far to big and intense or not allowing people access to a chain of command. The mind games are incredible and the article on wikipedia sums it all up really well because it is thorough and precise. The tactics are listed there and you can just tick the boxes these days .Manipulation is the name of the game.Lack of structure has led to lack of consideration. We are all talking about it because we are all involved in change in the workplace and we can all see what is happening but no one wants to take control...and I think that's the whole point. This way no one is held accountable for the health and welfare of their workers...and they can replace older, experienced workers with cheaper young ones whom they burn out and replace too. Cheap work force strategies to maximise profit?

Eat rats!

Eat rats, 'solve global food crisis' : "Mr Prakash's plan promotes consumption of rat meat in homes, street stalls, restaurants and even international five-star hotels."
OMG...OMG...OMG!!! I haven't recovered yet. In my book, or hard drive, the only good rat is a dead one but not on my plate. I hate them. I know they are cute and everything...but they just infest and infect and always have done. Maybe they are nutritious.Maybe they are more nutritious than other things we eat. Rat mince, rat balls, rat roast, rat chops, rat kebabs...stir fry rat. Rat bolognaise. I realise hungry people will eat what is there. I realise food faddishness is irrational. I'd rather eat guinea pig now I've thought about it. Some people eat guinea pigs. It is all in the culture and the upbringing and maybe we should be less fussy. But rats?

Grant Hackett

Swimming : "They included wearing face masks on aeroplanes, avoiding contact with public surfaces such as handrails and, it was reported, even refraining from kissing his wife, Candice Alley, in the immediate lead-up to competition."

And didn't his wife weep freely last night from the joy and relief of seeing grant win those heats so superbly? The big race is to come , but the relief that he was all right....more than all right, awesome , in fact, was a very touching moment for us to see. I must say the camera work and coverage of the Olympics has been great. Some of it is very artistic and inspirational, some of it is just technically very good and then there have been these sweet moments.Grant is always so serious when he is swimming. He becomes a force to be reckoned with because it is as much about his psychology as it is about his fitness. I am sure underneath that big guy is someone who is in awe of himself and the mind just plays its tricks when the pressure is on. He ought to be incredibly confident, but Grant Hackett is always cautious , careful and meticulous in his preparation and then afterwards he is so modest and matter of fact. What he did last night was stupendous and it is great to know he could have parents brimming with joy and excitement and a wife who was so deeply touched. this is a man who knows how to reach out and touch people. That in itself is powerful.

Attendance

Attendance: "# Students need to attend school regularly to reach their full learning potential
# Poor attendance makes it difficult for children to connect with their friends and develop socially
# There is a direct link between school attendance and achievement later in life
# Poor patterns of attendance can become a habit which is very difficult to change
# When young people are in school every day they are less likely be involved in harmful situations"

I can find stuff for Victoria and NSW who seem to have clear expectations...but we had a lot of kids who looked like they should have been at school out and about today. I know we have been sick. I know we have suffered in this cold, but kids need to be at school. If we don't have that as a priority we are going to be fat and uneducated. That'll help.Is it why there is a big drift to private schools? Do they track attendance better? I see it as a parental thing. I would have felt responsible had my children not been at school. I was the one with this expectation. NSW seems to have state policy which can underline and assist that parental expectation. What about our other states?

Mind you...maybe the kids are not at school so they can watch the Olympics. They do not happen very often. They are special and they are holding important finals during the day when we are working. On top of that they have awarded the Olympic coverage to a channel which is committed to football coverage. How silly. So, when I could be watching the Olympics because I have been working all day they have got the football on. Good way to sabotage viewing involvement.2008 has seriously lost it.

Australians now the fattest on earth

Australians now the fattest on earth: "Australia has acquired the dubious distinction of being the fattest on earth - with four million people classified as obese and another 5.4 million as overweight."

How good are we?? We win...gold for fatness. Well done.

Grant Hackett

Grant Hackett given all clear ahead of 1500m heat at Beijing Olympics : "THE Australian swim team doctor has given Grant Hackett the all clear after fears about his health going into tonight's 1500m heats at the Beijing Olympics."

I remember when Kieren Perkins won the 1500 when he was quite ill. That is why he is a hero. We willed him to win. The commentators had given up on him...and the guy just kept swimming till he won. It cost him personally, but what a legend and he is so happy now!!! Grant Hackett will give it his best. He always does. The nerves must take their toll and the constant pounding in the pool. I think the swimmers just have a gruelling time of it at the Olympics because they have to just keep swimming and keep fronting up for events and there is little time to recuperate. It all takes its toll. They will get run down. It happened to our cricket team when they just had to keep going out there and playing cricket. It wore them down. Bodies need to rest and recuperate. Grant has been swimming for a long time now. Hopefully he can do really well, but if he has reached saturation point and needs to back off now, then there is no shame in that. He has served us well. He'll give it his best shot and that's all we need. He got on the team, he has stayed on the team;he has done us proud so often. They really have taken us all there in their suitcase. I love that ad. It's just so appropriate.

Beijing Now readers split over performances

Beijing Now readers split over performances in the pool : "IS Olympic silver no longer good enough?"

Precisely. A silver or a bronze are both high awards and yes, it is fantastic when we get gold or an athlete gets gold. Our swimmers are doing really well against some tough competition . Critics pull things apart. Maybe they could have done better on another day at another time. We were talking about this very thing because of the Japanese gymnast who quite clearly was hugely talented but his shoulder was letting him down. It is clear all these athletes are immensely talented and extraordinarily well trained but they have to go for gold after a run of competitions and a lot of training...so they have to perform perfectly at a particular time on a given day. Swimmers tend to be in several races...they can only do their best at the time.

$100,000 drug bust

$100,000 drug bust : "FOUR people have been arrested in relation to the importation and trafficking of $100,000 worth of speed into Tasmania."

good..the more we catch the better and I guess it's a bit of a rats' nest out there with the drug stuff...but the more we catch the more we know about he links and I know they'll just keep trying. We all have to persevere until we reach that level of critical mass where we turn ourselves back into a healthy society...and the police can get on with cyber crime!

Rat brained Robot

A 'Frankenrobot' with a biological brain : "Once removed from rat foetuses and disentangled from each other with an enzyme bath, the specialised nerve cells are laid out in a nutrient-rich medium across an eight-by-eight centimetre array of 60 electrodes."

OMG...as long as they know what they are doing. This robot runs on rat brains with no extra help from anywhere and the plan is, I think, to work out how it works and then transfer that knowledge into practical use to help us deal with diseases like Alzheimers. That would be a bonus but the thought we have a robot which can run on rat brains is both astounding and weird. They want to teach this robot. now will it behave like a rat? Will it be capable of other things besides rat thinking? Curiouser and curiouser!

Elderly drink driver 'must be jailed'

Elderly drink driver 'must be jailed', police tell Melbourne court: "Regan today pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates Court to refusing a breath test, driving under the influence and being drunk."

I can understand the frustration of the police because he is unsafe, he appears to be hard to get along with and then he is putting himself and others at risk because he is constantly driving drunk. That's a concern because the police time and money is just going round in circles without this person's behaviour being changed. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? I think so. he must not be allowed access to a car. He has to have that drinking problem dealt with because it is what is causing all of this. behind the drunk is the story of what created the chronic drunk. He needs treatment and as a drunk he is not in the position to be rational about what he needs...he wants to drink, he wants to drive and he wants to be difficult. That is an alcohol fueled set of decisions. He needs to be put in a place where his alcohol addiction and the causes for it are dealt with. I think it is important to get the root causes fixed. Do we have a place? He has to be taken off the road. Jail will put him away but not change his behaviour and may well create other behaviours we don't want. I'd like to see him treated. I'd like to see his licence revoked forever and I'd like to see him doing community service when he has been rehabilitated...and I think the police need a break here with people like that because they are the ones who invariably have to deal with the front line stuff in road accidents, so they need some consideration too. If he cannot be helped , I guess we have no alternative but to try gaol.

Aussie girls take shock relay gold

Aussie girls take shock relay gold : "The team of Stephanie Rice, Bronte Barratt, Kylie Palmer and Linda McKenzie blew away the previous record by 5.78 seconds in a time of 7.44.31."

These games are full of excitement and surprises and because the athletes are all right up there then, I guess, it's not a surprise we are up there too. This swimming team has pulled some fantastic stuff out of their well trained hat! The girls just get in there and confidently give it their best...so Nicole Cooke from England came out and won the cycling road race and our girls have won the swimming relay. It's good that the athletes can just get in there and compete and it's not just taken for granted who will win. It means we get to see some fantastic races to the finish and the whole thing is more spontaneous because people are more evenly matched. There will always be people in their own major league...but the rest of the field just has to get in there and compete. It's great we won the relay.

Fans can Channel Seven's Olympic Beijing Games coverage

Fans can Channel Seven's Olympic Beijing Games coverage: "Despite the complaints the ratings are soaring."

It's the Olympics, that's why and the spirit of Australia is with the athletes. We have normally had first class coverage of the games but this year is hasn't been well thought out. We are used to expert commentary, good quality humour and a bit of consideration as to which events are on and what might be important viewing . We know there have to be ads...but it really hasn't been our usual good standard and we do have some quality commentators and excellent people who are capable of providing what we have become used to...an unusual and funny look at the games. I switch between 7 and SBS but we just don't have that class act we normally have for the Olympics but it is 2008 and much of what is happening this year around the place is about just doing it without thinking about the nuts and bolts. We need to look at our systems and our delivery because the action plans are just not coming up with the goods and one person is not as good as another in a given job.

Phelps wins butterfly

Phelps wins butterfly, relay gold medals to swim into history at Beijing Olympics : "MICHAEL Phelps has now won more gold medals than any other Olympic athlete in history"

he has 3 more to win and he will realise his own dream. Doesn't he want 8 at these Olympics? Well, if you don't dream big, how will your dreams know to come into your life? He seems very unassuming and like Ian Thorpe did, he takes his talent , not for granted, but as a very normal thing. It doesn't appear to make him arrogant or affect him badly. He is just very talented, very dedicated and I hope he achieves his own dreams. So far he is pretty impressive!
