Worm makes it debatable

Worm makes it debatable : "There was some controversy over the worm's independence after calls to a Sydney radio station suggested Channel Nine handpicked the audience."

Scurrilous worm!!! Fancy not being independent?! Why not? Post worm polls say so! Does it sound like we've lost it? First there was the worm. Then there wasn't the worm. Now there is the worm which isn't a proper worm...and we think we can elect a government?!

Royal in gay sex video scandal outed

Royal in gay sex video scandal outed: "Buckingham Palace has refused to comment on the report, saying it had nothing to say about what it described as 'a police matter.'"

As it is. So much for privacy. Media outlets feel this dreadful need to tell us absolutely everything about everyone and in the process a number of good people have been destroyed. How is that helping us?

Grand Prix suffered $34 million loss

Grand Prix suffered $34 million loss : "The losses were attributed to dwindling ticket sales and sponsorship revenue."

Should've left the Grand Prix in Adelaide!!! We were doing really well. Seriously, that's a big tab for Victoria to pick up and these are international events. So why don't people want to come when they always have come? I think we need to look at what is putting people off and one thing might be people thought there'd be no tickets as has been the case at international events.

Abbott turns up late to debate

Abbott turns up late to debate : "'This is mea culpa month I think for Tony Abbott - 'I'm sorry we didn't invest in the public hospitals', 'I'm sorry we didn't plan for the work force', 'I'm sorry I offended Bernie Banton' and now 'I'm sorry I offend a whole national TV audience',' she said."

Well, yes, he is doing a lot of sorry at the moment and I suppose that is a good thing. He isn't avoiding it altogether. I think politicians run jam packed schedules and they do need to be wary of this. If you do have a TV debate against your counterpart, you need to be there so your schedule needs to be freed up. The debate either has priority or it doesn't and the other debates have been well worth the efforts of the politicians and we need to hear our candidates speaking and we need to give them a chance to speak. I like what we have done this time. It's true...a trip between Melbourne and Canberra ought to be okay but TV cannot be held up. It just can't. If anything the other stuff could be delayed until later in the day. It sounds as though Ms Roxon was in fine form and organised and that's something to be considered. You actually want people to be there representing you with a sharp mind and plenty of energy . So...on with the show.

Wife keeps presidency in the family

Wife keeps presidency in the family : "Senator Fernandez said she also felt 'an immense responsibility for my gender'. 'I want to reach out to all women,' she said. 'I know that we can accomplish great work with the special skills that we have.'"

Not since Eva Peron has Argentina had a female president and they were jubilant in welcoming her as their new president. She is strong, charming, immaculately dressed and very eloquent. She takes over from her husband. Ségolène Royal was there so it was good to see these women politicians support and strengthen each other. The boys, their toys and their hot air are getting us into more and more trouble and over here we cannot even tolerate a woman speaking as a politician let alone consider having one for Prime Minister. Our women politicians need to take courage and heart from people like Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner because she sits very ably and comfortably at the top and her people are her people. We are incredibly limited and unbalanced in our approach when we cannot furnish credible, successful women from a country such as Australia. We have some amazing women who cannot seem to survive the political arena here. Why is that?

Sarkozy slams bid to smuggle kids

Sarkozy slams bid to smuggle kids : "FRENCH President Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday branded as 'illegal and unacceptable' an alleged attempted child kidnapping to France from the Chad-Darfur border involving a French charity."

It is very easy to bash humanitarians. They are at the coal face trying to bring some sense and stability into awful situations and France has been a world leader on this. They are not politicians, they are not lawyers, they are not media. They are human beings doing more than we are doing at the moment. At a time when the French people turned to their foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner , who has a distinguished track record in humanitarian aid and diplomacy, he appears to be on a trip to Asia and the boots are being sunk into the aid workers in Chad. Families were waiting at the airport in Paris to take these children into home stay families. It was on the news. One lady had 5 children and was making room for one of the African children coming in. They were going to be flying on a military plane into a main airport in France. Presumably people knew about this, the papers were in order and it can hardly be called a secret. I was watching it on the French news here! The adverts for homestay families in France were on some pretty solid French sites. So okay, people have changed their mind, but don't use the aid workers as the battle ground. We need people like that. It would appear the plan was to put the children in homestay situations because the situation in Darfur is so difficult and the children are at risk. In Australia we will understand the position of Chad because we have had our own stolen generation conflict and it has hurt and damaged people deeply. Sometimes people do not think very clearly in the long term. It would appear the French people and organisations wanted to provide safety, education and health care for children who are living in circumstances of very serious risk. We have that capacity to do that these days and why not? We can fly people out to help save them and their families. That is our world. On the other hand you do not want to be cutting people off from their cultural richness and roots. You do not want to be stopping people from being who they are. If you read the French news there is plenty of discussion about it and there is both criticism and support of the organisation Zoe's Ark. It is all very well the politicians discussing and deciding ...but what will happen to those children?

Major emmitters must sign up

Major emmitters must sign up: Rudd : "In a major backflip, Mr Garrett last night was forced to release a statement saying Labor would require 'binding commitments from both developed and developing countries' in a post-2012 agreement."

Until now we haven't ratified Kyoto and that is something we are judged badly for and set a bad example in. We need to be part of Kyoto to put us on the same page as other countries, so to speak. Signing up to Kyoto would be a positive step forward and an achievement. Then there is the matter of emissions control. It seems daft belonging to a treaty which wouldn't have any real bite in terms of emissions commitments. We are so past the point of talking about it. At this point climate change requires clear action and commitment from all countries. The citizens of the planet are more on the ball than the leaders. So I accept we endorse something "in principle" just to get us into that arena so we can make a contribution, but I also acknowledge we should prefer to sign up to active change rather than change "in principle". We need to be in it to negotiate or it looks like we don't want to be a part of it.

False lobby created for urban delinquents

False lobby created for urban delinquents : "A 12m shipping container has been furbished to create the illusion that it is the foyer of an apartment building, with door and windows, interphone, digicode, letter-boxes, false lift and a staircase leading to the roof."

Yes, I suppose running the gauntlet past a group of youths, depending on what mood they were in, would be intimidating to get into your apartment. It's hilarious how they have made a false lobby, but it's a good idea. The young people obviously want a place to hang out which is like a cubby house and sheltered from the elements. It tends to suggest they want a little place to go to meet up and talk as other age groups do. urban planners need to think about how we can accommodate the meeting places of young people so they are positive rather than negative. That's the trick. A group of kids together can often get into mischief and so people do not like to see them as a big group together. I think we need to think about it. They often like t be somewhere that's a bit different and a bit exciting in terms of venue. They used to use quarries here and sink holes, but now it seems to be shopping centres and parks. Maybe they need to be incorporated into the urban planning talks.

Supernanny parent help hotline

Supernanny parent help hotline goes 24/7 : "NSW Minister for Community Services Kevin Greene today said the Supernanny Hotline would operate around the clock from today, having previously been available six days a week, from 9am to 4.30pm."
The service is available to all of us but will only refer us to NSW services. it's a good start. The difficulty with city living s that people are often coping alone. In rural areas they can become isolated too because of distance. We do not have the same access to friends and relatives as do people who are in small communities. So, to use technology to bridge that gap is sensible. people need to run their ideas past people and they can often be comforted by knowing someone is listening and on their side. I hope we expand such services because I think we need to put back in some way the things which support us...and that's people!

Car thieves tracked by GPS system

Car thieves tracked by GPS system: "The man contacted police and the car company, who tracked the vehicle using its on-board GPS navigation system."

Veronica Mars eat your heart out!!! oh dear, not the Monaro. Thank heavens for technology because it has saved the day again. it's one of those love hate relationships we have with technology. We complain it's invasive, annoying...blah, blah, but his car was tracked down and remotely disabled through its GPS system. It would want to be. It's a Monaro...prrrretty special!! I hope they catch the thieves. Remote onboard cameras, please!!

Space shuttle 'damaged'

Space shuttle 'damaged' : "US astronaut Daniel Tani noticed metal shavings and unusual wear on a race ring of a rotary joint used to rotate the arrays, NASA officials said."

Doesn't sound good because there is obviously the real wear and tear on the race ring...and it has to be managed 390 Km above the earth out there in space. Shifting solar panels, preparing for new labs, fixing race rings..they are incredibly game and busy. The ISS is the same distance as from here to Millicent, so it's quite a hike up there...and the astronauts seem to be extraordinarily game people. It's fantastic this is turning into a big international operation. It's true there are things on earth which need repairing and fixing but somehow people have always had to follow things which are bigger and more fantastic than ordinary life. It is what inspires them to great heights, quite literally. From the ISS will eventually come further space exploration...and that is amazing to be living in a time when we are starting to brave those frontiers. It is a pity we cannot use this same brilliant thinking and behaviour to correct our failings on earth. I wish we could, but we don't seem to be able to apply that kind of high end problem solving capacity to real life problems. Odd really.

Consumer watchdog targets 'green marketing'

Consumer watchdog targets 'green marketing' : "'If a claim is made, it's got to be truthful, it's got to be able to be substantiated,' he said."

Truth and trust in advertising - now that's great idea. We spend a lot of time these days reading labels and packages and sharing our knowledge at the supermarkets. We want organic organic, green green and we want products which have been made in reasonable work conditions. Word of mouth has become important to us because we aren't sure anymore. I hope we can put the truth back into products.

Aliens in Italy

Aliens Attack Earth - The Daily Record: "According to the report, the fires were 'caused by high-power electromagnetic emissions which were not man made and reached a power of between 12 and 15 gigawatts'."

So, they are here, the aliens. We don't have to go looking for them anymore. All the electrical smouldering, the fridges catching on fire, electrical cords smoking in the little Italian village are aliens. Unnatural forces creating enormous amounts of energy. Experts have been to investigate over the last two years....and it's happened before!!

Greens launch their election campaign

Greens launch their election campaign : "In front of more than 200 supporters packed into the State Library of Victoria, Greens leader Bob Brown said the party would use the balance of power to secure a better future for the country."

We do need to get some balance into the senate. When it's run by one party..then there is no discussion, no debate , no consideration and no democracy. One party gets it all their own way and we need to address this because it means we are blocked and stifled when actually, we are country which can blossom and grow. Our main concern at the moment is getting balance. A number of us have noticed that Labour posters of Nicole Cornes and Amanda Rishworth have been taken down. Other posters may have been taken down elsewhere. We are not a bit happy because the posters go up and they should stay up. To have this kind of fiddling is stupid and it doesn't matter who we support...we want to see all their faces up there.

Lightning, storms lash state

Lightning, storms lash state: "SOUTH AUSTRALIA was lashed by lightning, storms and gale force winds which capsized boats, blew off roofs, brought down trees and left more than 6000 homes without power last night."

Indeed. For the last 2 weekends we have gone from top summer to bottom winter. The temperatures and conditions have been really rather diverse and dramatic. The storm damage is evident as you drive around with tree branches down. October usually brings us high winds but not usually the extremes in temperature. One minute we're in shorts, the next minute winter woollies and the beloved track pants!

UN concern over Olympic pollution

UN concern over Olympic pollution: "In some cases, pollution is said to be more than three times the safe limits set by the World Health Organization."

At this stage Bejing has been selected to be the Olympic City. People expressed concern at the time about the pollution but it was still been selected. As a world we need to get in there and try to help resolve the problems. I dare say China is doing all that it can to bring it under control. We need an international approach to this and a problem solving one..and it is about solving the problem and not laying the blame. Bejing was chosen. We now have to co operate internationally to assist Bejing to be ready for the Olympics.

US air force eyes green fuel

US air force eyes green fuel : "US air force global operations require a huge amount of energy. In fiscal 2006, the service consumed almost 2.6 billion gallons of aviation fuel at a cost of more than $US5.7 billion ($A6.3 billion), according to an air force fact sheet."
Big money, big carbon and greenhouse emissions. Yes, it would be a good idea to look at alternatives and thereby help resolve the pollution and carbon problems facing our planet. It would be of significant help and it would be so much better if that money could be saved and redirected back into he lives of the American people. America has a lot of coal and so it finds it difficult to overlook that and redirect its money and efforts into renewable sources. It needs to be looked at. It is a cost and global warming issue so it is worth thinking about.

Biofuels 'crime against humanity'

Biofuels 'crime against humanity': "Within that time, according to Mr Ziegler, technological advances would enable the use of agricultural waste, such as corn cobs and banana leaves, rather than crops themselves to produce fuel."

Mr. Ziegler has made a very good point and the implications of food sources, using agricultural land and concentrating energies and money into mechanical fuel rather than human fuel does has implications of a very sever nature and we need to go back to the drawing board. I didn't really think about it and I feel embarrassed now. It's good we have people like Mr. Ziegler who can paint a different picture. We are all so intent on cutting carbon and reducing fuel costs we have neglected to look at the big picture. We need to think this out more carefully.

Australian teachers high and dry in Japan

Australian teachers high and dry in Japan : "THOUSANDS of young foreigners teaching English in Japan were left jobless and in danger of expulsion from the country yesterday after embattled language school giant Nova shut its 925 schools and sought bankruptcy protection from creditors pursuing 43.9 billion yen ($418 million)."

This will have a far reaching impact and it seems astounding NOVA has collapsed so fast. The article does not say why really. How it came about. Okay, so it has creditors at its door but we all believed it was a very strong and very reliable company. All seems to be highly irregular. It'll affect a lot of Australians because so many young Australians have loved going to Japan to teach English. it is how we have built some solid connections with Japan. It's not just the money. Those who have gone there have done it to allow themselves a chance to understand and appreciate the culture and they have always come home raving about what a great time they have had. Some will stay on under different conditions and some may go to their countries to teach English. it has been a tried and true way of developing the linguistic skills of the young of Japan and Australia and this really is disappointing.

Oil hits record high above $US92/barrel

AdelaideNow... Oil hits record high above $US92/barrel: "WORLD oil prices surged to historic highs today, breaching $US92 for the first time in New York amid rising tension in crude-rich Iran and tightening US energy supplies."

Well, I am sure those who have OIL interests and ownership are having a lovely time of it stashing the cash away. there always seems to be a reason to raise the price for whatever reason and we are so over it because it is not about us nor a fair price.

Federal Election 2007 | AdelaideNow

Federal Election | Federal Election 2007 : "FIND out which political party best fits your views on the big issues."

This is so exciting!!! We now have choices!!! We have never had choices and each site is different, interesting and information rich. Then they all have a sense of fun. It's called balance. It's called discussion. Thinking, no less. Oh, I am so excited. Adelaide Now has its own election 07 site and a good one it is too. Full of news, interactivity, things to do, things to discuss. It really is a well organised, well constructed site. So now we have Yahoo7, ABC and our own Adelaide one...and other sites attached to the newspaper sites of our choice. It's great. The media have got the pollies on the Net and they are getting us to participate in a real election where we look at platforms, promises, critical issues, spin, claptrap and seats. Pulling it together this way is a very energetic and enthusiastic way of embracing the very thing which affects all of us...our government. We can't just shrug and say, I don't care. We need to get in there and do our bit. The Net makes it so easy and given our media people have led us ably on climate change initiatives, they are demonstrating once again they know who we are, what we want, how to deliver it and can do that with verve. It has actually encouraged them to get out of the rut and do something more interesting and imaginative. This is our country. Our future...and now we have election sites. Well done, you guys, fantastic!! I'm so excited.

Heavy drinkers face increased muscle weakness

Heavy drinkers face increased muscle weakness: study : "'So if we take say, the muscles in the leg for example, when you go to walk and pull your foot up, you don't pull your foot up as far as you think you're going to, so you're more prone to tripping,' he said."

All sorts of things drive people to drinking too much. Sometimes it's the lifestyle expectation. Sometimes it is grief and loss and sometimes it's a carry over habit in terms of problem solving which just worsens. I haven't met someone who drinks a lot who actually wants to be like that. They like a drink. They relax when they drink, but the rest of it can cause a lot of worry and trauma. Oddly enough, one of the best ways of picking someone who drinks too much and isn't managing is the fact they seem to get injuries especially on their face...because they fall over and they fall into things. The muscle weakness now explains that better and also explains why a lot of people who had better than normal strength suddenly feel like they have no strength. We have been observing this for a long time...now we know why and I think the muscle weakness is a good indicator of when we should act to try and get help to these people. Before that , they can get away with it, I suppose, but once they start tripping and falling, it's a sign they are coming undone and need recognition of the fact they are not coping. Not that they are easy to help, but I have found Australia to be particularly good at finding the work arounds for health issues once they know the causes. The support is very practical and non judgemental and those are the keystones of sound and effective treatment plans and programmes.

Govt facing High Court challenge over NT intervention

Govt facing High Court challenge over NT intervention : "The Maningrida community east of Darwin has confirmed it is taking legal action but is not commenting any further at this stage."

It is often the small communities which show the most courage because they are tightly knit and know what they want. This whole intervention has been a a valuable exercise since it has made us question more directly what our values are and what we think about how we, as a nation, treat our indigenous people. Until now the indigenous people have been acted upon, talked about but now we have a community which will stand for what it believes in and use our systems to address the issues. No one wants the violence and abuse . No one denies more help needs to be given. No one will stop aid, support, the things the communities need to live happier, better lives. The consultation has been lacking. You wouldn't stomp into a white community here and do that, so our indigenous community has been treated differently and some think that is okay, but they do not stop those same abuses happening in white areas. Whoever takes our country into the future needs to walk alongside out indigenous people and needs to talk with them...and apply our laws to everyone. We do not accept violence. We do not accept abuse..and that applies to everyone.

Malcolm Fraser calls for bill of rights

Malcolm Fraser calls for bill of rights : "'We seriously need a bill of rights following the practice of all European Union countries, New Zealand, Canada and the US. We're the odd man out,' Mr Fraser said in his lecture,"

Well, yes, they invented constitutional monarchies to limit royal power and they separated the powers of the state, church and judiciary in order to stop abuse of power and we do have a government which has become unanswerable to anyone because it has complete control of the senate and constantly makes unilateral decisions without considering democratic decision making channels...all for our own good and because they know and we do not. Malcolm Fraser has become a very wise and helpful elder statesman. As an ex Prime Minister he has brought a lot of expertise and knowledge to his capacity to influence others and make them think logically. Too many older politicians are lost to us because they are of the belief they are done and dusted if they lose their position. Malcolm Fraser has risen above that and shown us the way to go if we wish to become a republic. We do have to look at how we think, how we organise ourselves and how we deliver our policies and laws. We need to rummage through our legislation and look at what we need into order to become the country we want to be...and we know that know. We are no longer confused.

Rescue helicopter lands on highway

Rescue helicopter lands on highway : "The NRMA CareFlight helicopter was called to the scene, and landed on the roadway."

I read this and thought we are really lucky to live in an age and a country where helicopters can be dispatched to tricky road accidents and that they can actually land on the highway. It might have been an inconvenience and it may not have been what they wanted to do...land on the road, but they could do it. That the woman regained consciousness and could be transported by regulars means is fortunate. That the others at the accident could be treated there is good...but we have emergency services which just get out there and do their job. They do what it takes to get it right and keep us safe. Yes, they get it wrong sometimes, but they are under pressure. I am just thankful our emergency services will co ordinate all this stuff for us to give us the best possible chance of receiving the critical treatments.

Child porn websites 'worsening'

Child porn websites 'worsening': "Now web giants including Tiscali, Yahoo and MSN are helping to publicise the IWF's hotline, which allows internet users to report these sites."
Somebody photographs and offers these photos for publication. That's one thing we have to address. Then sites publish them and they are there for all to see. Our children. Our grand children. Our nieces and nephews. The only way we can stop this is to unite across the globe and be extra specially vigilant with the reporting of the stuff. It's no use ignoring it or pretending it doesn't happen. If people are offering these photos we have made it worth their while. We haven't nurtured our children. Now, it probably has something to do with money. Some people can seem to do anything for money. We have to know where our boundaries are and we have to be clear about what we accept. I do not accept the use and abuse of children. Not any children. If internet giants are now going to join the police in their battle against this, then we need to encourage them, to say thank you and get out the message that we value our children and we want them to stay as children, in our care. People are getting behind it now and reporting sites. We need to keep it up. Obviously it is a widespread problem so a lot of people collude in this mistreatment and exploitation of children. They obviously think it's all right. I am not sure why that is.

First space birth

First space birth: it's a cockroach : "A cockroach called Nadezhda (Hope) has given birth to the first creatures ever conceived in space."

Well, there you go...we are all Grandparents of healthy baby space cockroaches and we can thank the Russians for these new space additions. It would have to be cockroaches, wouldn't it!?

Boy fights off adult playground attacker

AdelaideNow... Boy fights off adult playground attacker: "The 10-year-old boy told police he was seized from behind by the man in the grounds of his school at Ingleburn, in Sydney's southwest, at 8.30am (AEST) yesterday."

The police have a good description so they ought to be able to catch him. The parents must be both worried sick and enormously proud. The boy was 10 and had sufficient self confidence and skills to fight off a much older attacker. He showed some real personal courage and skills in self preservation. But he was at school and flying a paper aeroplane. Just being a kid. It's horrible he cannot do that, so I hope they do find the attacker.

Howard debt buggered economy

AdelaideNow... Howard debt buggered economy: Hawke: "During that period, he said, unemployment reached 11 per cent, inflation 11 per cent and the Budget deficit $9.6bn – or $40bn in today's terms."

Well, yes, the interest rates on mortgages during Mr. Howard's time in the treasury became astronomical. Our current budget is run on credit. Overseas debt, overseas borrowing, large mortgages and high credit debts. The economy has been "stimulated" but if you ran your household on high credit you would have to be a remarkable financial whizz to get yourself over it. No one recommends you carry heavy debt and most people advise you to invest in assets. It's a gamble. It is about shifting money but while we are on a global economy it will be very difficult for us to control it the same as when people run themselves into debt without finding ways of getting a really solid income stream in their personal lives. Our primary income through farming has taken a hit through the drought. We have not trained people and invested in education and we have neglected transport and health. All of that has to be addressed. It's just about looking after ourselves. People know a lot more about financial things these days and have a better idea of what things mean. Whoever manages our economy has to beef up our income and probably get us to slow down a bit in terms of spending so we pay of our mortgages and secure our homes. I just look at it as housekeeping on a grander scale and I have heard far more expert people discuss this and they need to. In that sense it's good because we can't just ignore it and we do have to understand some of the management practices.

Food, housing pushing up inflation

AdelaideNow... Food, housing pushing up inflation: "One of the biggest cost blowouts over the past year has been a 21.5 per cent surge in the prices of vegetables. The price of bread jumped 8 per cent."

Yes, mortgage rises and food costs will impact on us all. They are different issues however. The drought will affect the cost of our food because we haven't been able to supply everything in vast quantities as we usually do. It means looking at farm practices, water management and global warming. These are hot issues which need to be dealt with. We can manage the food costs if we think about it and if we are given the correct information about what is freely available and what isn't. It's called budgeting and it will take some of our time but we'll get our heads around it. We'll also do our bit towards global warming but we truly need better leadership at the top. Our best green advice is coming through the media and they are to be heartily congratulated for getting right into it and working out ways and means of giving us information and then strategies we can adopt. They have developed a real sense of community about this. I daresay they will come to the party on the food prices and availability and work with us on the work arounds.

Abuse fight targets social sites

Abuse fight targets social sites: "CEOP research shows that, while chatrooms and instant messaging services are the main places sex offenders go in search of victims, social networks are attracting them too."

Fighting predators online ought to be easier than in real life because notification can be instant. It puts the power into the hands of the one who is being harassed/stalked/cajoled/enticed. It means an online user can report instantly but could also ask for help instantly via chatlines or email. It has taken us a while to work this out, but we do have to work out how we'll manage the reporting and the police and any other helpful organisations need to know how they will manage and maintain the online presence and monitoring. It would take a lot of pressure off. It would mean ISPs can be identified and the "game plans" can be deconstructed and fed back to the public as useful education. it is about information, education and then an effective way of dealing with the online alert system. it could be managed internationally. it could use tried and trusted people who might not otherwise be able to work outside their homes. it's a good breakthrough.

International Worm

Australian row over TV 'worm': "'This is not John Howard's election or Kevin Rudd's election,' he said. 'This is the Australian voter's election.'"

Well, I hope whoever our voter is makes the right decision on our behalf. At this rate it will be the worm!! This worm certainly has pulling power. It's got us on the international news circuit!! So, we'll get a wriggle on with the election, shall we??

Debate II: Return of the worm?

Debate II: Return of the worm? : "'Nonetheless, I look forward to a robust exchange of views about the economic opportunities and challenges we face now and in the future.'"

I love it. It's what we need. We need to lighten up and we need to hear people talking and who would've thought a worm could have that much clout? It's hilarious. Most people seem to like the worm, but here are debate purists like me who just like to hear the talk and let my own mind do the judging. For a lot of people, the worm is the thing they react to and then they start talking and discussing and I suppose it's bec ause we live in a visual world and a world of polls and opinion generators. So be it. Let people have what they need to get their brains going so they can participate in this election. For once we have people talking about all the aspects of politics...some pretty heavy duty and some very light hearted. it's all good. If the networks have any sense they'll do like they did Sunday and let Channel 9 run the worm and let the ABC do the straight , unadorned version. Catering to people's needs is all part and parcel of being inclusive and teaching people to participate in politics. it can only be good for the politicians and good for us because it's livelier.

Rebel African Snails

Food chain gets own back as giant snails take over : "The snail was brought to Brazil as a substitute for the common garden snail - or escargot. At first it seemed like a good idea: the snails had more meat, grew faster and were more resistant to disease. So people started growing them in their backyards to sell to restaurants."

It sounds funny when you think of your dinner rebelling and taking over your country. These African snails are 30cm long and it seemed a good idea to import them into Brazil as a source of food and income for those who wanted to nurture them. Unfortunately the African snails taste different form the local ones and aren't so welcome. They were released into the wild, took over, started carrying nasty pathogens and have now become a real problem. The Brasilians have to catch them and destroy them by hand. They need something more mechanical and easier. I 'd hate to be catching and destroying 30cm snails..but you'd have to if they are carrying horrible diseases. I hope science or industry can come up with something to help, but it's always a problem when you import species from other countries. Things just seem to get out of hand in the wrong environment and don't we know it.

PM rejects more debates with Rudd

PM rejects more debates with Rudd : "Prime Minister John Howard has knocked back calls for another debate with Labor leader Kevin Rudd, saying Sunday night's head-to-head was extensive and lengthy."

That is such a pity. Worm or no worm, it's good to hear our leaders talking , it should be common place and we should expect it. As it stands we'll be raving on about the wriggly one who seems to have captured our imaginations! Go on...debate some more. We are actually enjoying politics. This is truly amazing and wonderful....we could have sing a longs with bouncing balls. No, seriously. Let's debate. What about Mr. Rudd and Mr. Brown if Mr. Howard has had enough?

McGrath to turn out for NSW 20/20 cricket

McGrath to turn out for NSW : "The 37-year-old paceman will turn out for the Blues in their Twenty20 Big Bash competition match against Queensland at Telstra Stadium on January 8."

If current discussion are anything to go by, bring it on. We weren't sure about he 20/20 because it wasn't really cricket. Now we think it's fantastic. it is high powered, adrenalin pumping cricket which is a lot of fun, good sport and great entertainment. if it's bringing out Glen McGrath who is raising money for the McGrath breast cancer foundation , well, so much the better. We'll look forward to it. We can't lose!

US Bushfires

US wildfires force mass evacuations : "'Throughout the region, more than 30,000 acres [12,000 hectares] have already burned, and more areas are threatened. The wildfires have caused the loss of human life and serious injuries,' the Governor's statement added."

I feel so sorry for the people in California. Bushfires are awful, just awful I hope they have enough fire fighting power and equipment to help them because this sounds as severe as we have had in NSW and it is exhausting and traumatic for the fire fighters who just have to carry on relentlessly. I hope they have plenty of back up and our thoughts are with them. Hopefully the weather will change a bit to help them because strong winds just make it so terribly difficult.

Press Club meets to discuss 'worm' fallout

Press Club meets to discuss 'worm' fallout : "'My view is that there should be independent debate commission in Australia, we should have an independent body that sets the terms and conditions for these leaders' debates,' he said."

I turned over to Channel 9 after the debate on Channel 2 and saw that Ray Martin and the lady with him were discussing the worm in a very intelligent way. They, and others, appeared to be enjoying dissecting the worm and the comments were fair and reasonable. I then came on the Net and found out the worm had been blocked but Channel 9 had hijacked the Sky feed and then delivered what they had promised by the use of our technology. It has created a really healthy fall out because it is being discussed and it's being considered and everyone has a point of view. I haven't heard this kind of interest in positively ages, so the humble worm is doing its bit for democracy. I don't actually like the worm. I just like to hear people talk and think what I think. I think the worm is a bit silly, but that is me and it is not the case for all of us. Some people really enjoy the worm. In any case I thought it was hilarious when Channel 9 hijacked the Sky worm. It was just so 2007. We do need open conditions for the debates, but we also need to tailor the debates to different audiences so that all people feel involved. That , to me, is the critical issue. So I am glad we are discussing it hot and fast but if our leaders are so easily put off public debate because of the meanderings of a worm, then I think they need to come up to speed. They need to know they are mightier than the worm and it's just a worm!!

The Great Debate

The hour passed really quickly so it was interesting and it has renewed my faith in Australian politics. We need to to this more often and I should like to think Mr. Howard would consider another debate and include Bob Brown because we really need to sort the climate policies details. For us it is a critical issue and the Greens are , and ought to be, far more practical and knowledgeable in this area. For us to come of age in this country , we have to be able to stage such debates as a matter of course, because this one was a good one . The journalists asked some really good questions. Really good. The two leaders had obviously taken this debate very seriously and had prepared very carefully and we actually got to hear the sorts of things we are left out of on a regular basis. Both the men took the debate in their stride and we were not patronised. I should like to hear another debate where they talk more of education and health strategies and we need to come back to that climate discussion. It's true that the person who does well in the debate does not necessarily win the election so there is more to our elections than thinking and discussing. I don't think we are ready to become a republic until we can take this issue of debating seriously and until we are prepared to keep asking our politicians to stand before us and articulate their views. It's not easy. They know one mistake and it'll be all over the press. I think we need to encourage them to adopt this approach. Dare I say I enjoyed it? They both made it interesting because they treated the whole thing and each other with respect. I value that and believe it's what we need.

Japanese soldier's postcard reaches friend after 64 years

Japanese soldier's postcard reaches friend after 64 years : "The card travelled from Burma, Nagasaki, Arizona and Hawaii before finding Shizuo Nagano, 80, in southern Kochi prefecture, according to Mukogawa Women's University."

This is just one of those lovely stories. For a man to hear from his friend after 64 years must mean a lot to him and all because people had kept the post card and then an exchange student happened to find out about it and could return it. I wonder how they found Mr. Nagano.

UK phone-in scandal costs viewers $18m

UK phone-in scandal costs viewers $18m : "In other examples of abuse, the production team on Soapstar Superstar ignored viewer votes and picked songs they thought more suitable for contestants to sing. On one occasion, two contestants were thrown off, despite not finishing last in the viewer vote."

Yes, the world really is full of ways and means of getting money out of our pockets into theirs and it is good that this particular phone in model has been questioned and dealt with in a serious manner. We really are played for suckers sometimes and it's about the wake up call! We need to constantly question whether we actually need to be spending that money and whether we are getting bang for our back. Sometimes we just walk into it all too easily.

Lifetime supply of beer offered for stolen laptop

Lifetime supply of beer offered for stolen laptop : "Owners Paul Croucher and Nigel Gregory were so desperate to get it back, they were offering free beer to whoever turned in the person responsible for the burglary, Rotorua's Daily Post newspaper said."

The value of back ups! Truth is, no matter how often you try to back up you have never got it in the same , up to date format as on the computer you are currently using. I had a heart attack when I lost my USB key with all the current work which I hadn't had tie to back up because I was busy setting the key up so I could use it. I have since doubly triply backed it up, but it still isn't current. It's time factor. I hope these guys get their laptop back and the point is, no one should have stolen the stuff. While I sit here and preach back up, bottom line is we should not be helping ourselves to other people's equipment. I hope they had video surveillance and I hope they catch the thief. Pot on them.

I was never a commie - Gillard

I was never a commie - Gillard : "“So if we all want to go back to people's university days and talk about when Peter Costello was flirting with joining the Labor Party, when Brendan Nelson was in the Labor Party, it's going to be a pretty silly debate,” she said."

I really do not like the way women are treated in politics and there are so few now who can survive at the top because the Government has become an exclusive boys' club where women are patronised and treated in a very odd fashion. Certainly not as equals and certainly not as people to be taken seriously. Women become the butt of insults, spurious claims and fault finding. Julia Gillard is doing well to come back as an adult with the facts. At the moment we are getting these sprays of anything and everything which might stick, true or not. It is about appealing to people's prejudices and I cannot abide that. It makes the greens and women politicians look really good because they haven't resorted to that kinds of silly nonsense. I am truly disappointed that is the level of leadership in our country. Where are the proper discussions and when are these men going to realise when they came to government they had no idea. They have made themselves who they are just as anyone else can. To claim they are the only people who can run this country is a bit far fetched.

A factory overdose feeding our streets

e solely for export - to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and, in some cases, the US."

What's the expression? never give a sucker an even break? We are soooo stupid. So stupid and here we are trying to convince people we have got it together. We are just being ripped off left right and centre and we really need to wake up to ourselves. The article and well written and a very informative read.

Tram extension success

Tram extension success: "In the first three days, 28,059 trips were taken on the trams while the three weeks prior averaged 20,126 trips each week."

New Trams

I told you we were excited about the trams and that we'd patiently wait until it was all sorted out. We haven't enjoyed the rebuilding and roadworks, but the closer the trams have come , the more excited we have become. It's fun! It's good and maybe we can now get some cars out of the city because Adelaide is starting to look really good and fewer cars would make it brilliant!! Adelaide is well suited to tram networks and it would really help tourists, city dwellers and visitors who come in by train nad bus. It means you are no longer restricted if you don't have a car...and who wants a car in the city??? Clean and green!!

Storm run-off fit to drink

Storm run-off fit to drink: "Since the project began in September, 2006, 140 million litres of water - equal to one-quarter of Adelaide's daily consumption - has passed through wetlands into the aquifer 165m below the surface."

This is just brilliant. Another go ahead, sustainable idea but it needs 3 more years of testing. It collects storm water which passes through a wetlands into an underground aquifer. Fantastic planning and thinking because it benefits the environment as well as us. As much as we'd like to start using this idea it does have to go the full distance research because anything with water can start off really well and then a few years down the track there are problems with moulds, algae, water borne diseases. We just have to wait and in the meantime be really glad we have got some sustainable stuff up and running.

Greens to audit every home

Greens to audit every home : "THE Greens have unveiled a $22 billion plan to improve the energy efficiency of every Australian home. Under the scheme, every home would be subject to an energy audit and then retrofitted with energy-saving devices, including solar hot water systems, insulation and low-flow shower heads."

This makes such good sense because we are in the position to be able to use renewable energy but we have to get everyone on the same page, so to speak. Getting a baseline for every home is a start and this is a plan which is achievable and will then contribute to a sustainable future. It includes everyone. If the fitting of basic energy cutting devices is also organised for those people who have no idea how to go about doing it, then it's areal step forward to a sustainable future which we are all participating in. I hope this idea is picked up no matter who winds the elections because it's so constructive.

Princess 'recovering' from stress illness

Princess 'recovering' from stress illness : "The plight of Masako, a Harvard-educated former diplomat, is often compared to that of Michiko, who broke tradition in 1959 when she became the first commoner to marry an heir to the throne."
In this day and age this seems terribly sad. I do know that the Japanese people are upset about how ill their Crown Princess Masako is and she is not the only one in the royal family to be suffering, but she has not been able to function for 3 years now and sounds as though she is both ill and in despair. I know people don't mean to do this to others and that tradition is tradition. I think in the interests of wellbeing and peace of mind, Japan needs to seriously look kindly upon the plight of this woman because she has a lot to offer and it is because she has not had a son she is in this state. They have a beautiful 5 year old daughter but a girl cannot inherit the throne. This is tragic in 2007 and the mother is eating herself away from despair. I do hope that something can be done and that Crown Princess Masako can be spared her life of suffering and be allowed to be the competent, capable highly educated woman she is.

Police arrest drive-through hoon

Police arrest drive-through hoon : "Victoria Police have arrested the hoon driver who performed a 'burn out' inside a convenience store driving through the front door, leaving his registration plate still inside the store."

Well, he'll just have to take the rap.

Catriona hurt by gag backfire

AdelaideNow... Catriona hurt by gag backfire: "A spokeswoman for the network declined to comment yesterday but sources close to Rowntree said the veteran presenter had been 'really upset'' by the nasty incident, which was filmed earlier this year."

I don't know where this was taped but it's normal practice here to get written permission if you are going to record someone. It's a bit like reading someone's diary and now our technology can deliver way to much information. Ooops, ooops, ooops, oops, oops...oh, deah! Oooooooooops.

Glossy brochure just a 'dirty trick'

Glossy brochure just a 'dirty trick' : "Mr Fawcett said yesterday the brochure showed the 'shallowness' of the ALP. 'They claim I'm out of touch, but the photo is me at a community fundraiser in the electorate.'"

They seem to have forgotten the Liberal who ran amok on the Net and had to have his site pulled. Honestly, Kevin Rudd asked for the brochure to be removed, but for pity's sake. We are adults we do not need to be told what to think and we do not need this silly nonsense. Let's get our teeth into something decent..or has everyone lost the capacity to think and act in an adult fashion? While Mr. Howard has been getting stuck into Chaser , we have been laughing our heads off because they can speak several sentences which are syntactically correct and which create thought and more thought. When they go to far , we know. We are not stupid and we are sick of this tripe.

Greens to host rival debate - with worm

Greens to host rival debate - with worm | The Australian: "'I don't think John Howard's got the ticker to have a Green there (at the official debate),'' Senator Brown said."

So who is Bob Brown going to debate and why is it on at the same time? He's at least cottoned on to the fact that you have to have a worm to have a say! Honestly. The country has lost it. I'd like to see all three of them debating. At least the Green one has an audience . I love how the people who actually matter are constantly left out and marginalised. Our country. Our democracy. Our debate. I want to hear all of them. As it stands we are not allowed to...well, that is how it seems. I somehow want something open and civilised so we can hear people speak. It ought not to be an us and them and a them and him. Can't someone get some sense into this because it's driving me crazy.

Nine to use 'the worm" during debate

Nine to use 'the worm" during debate : "'It will be much more exciting, I can tell you, if the Greens are up against Mr Howard than the look-a-like Labour alternative,' Senator Brown said."

More than one debate would have been really good but Mr. Howard has not been a negotiator. He just says things and that's that. It would be a good idea to hear the Greens because they are not exactly getting a lot of air play with the focus on Mr. Rudd and Mr. Howard. The Greens may well have a number of things to say about the environment and it is an issue which is one of our priorities. At this stage we do not have a debate because we are back into the potshots and truly, we are over that approach and it isn't helping us at all. This is not how we currently view Australia and the debates out here are lively and animated.

Abbott admission fuels union debate

Abbott admission fuels union debate : "'In fact I moved a resolution to go on strike one day after consolidated press management sacked the whole photographic department.'"

Exactly. Unions are good when you want them and it's far too easy, for some reason, to allow them to be viewed badly when so many people have benefited form unions. There are times when they focus on things you don't like, but then you tell them. They are driven by people who want work place conditions and change. Look at how we were before unions. I have been glad of my union on more than one occasion and when I think they've got the focus wrong I let them know. So why focus on unions? Shall we also look at who's been to private schools, the gender make up of the front bench, the bank balances, the religious persuasions and allegiances? We could look at other things too. All seems a bit silly to me.

Electioneering

ABC Online: "They’re off and spinning. Each team will play to the presumed strengths of its leader and the presumed failings of the other. It will also cost a bucketload of money."

This is more like it!! Now the ABC has broadened its base and put in some really readable stuff about our current political agenda...and run up to the election. Do we want the same ole same ole? Do we want our politicians to liven up and show a bit more panache? Flair? Inspiration? Are we tired of hearing what we think? Are we sick of how serious we all are and how lacking in animation because no one listens? Well, this part of the ABC site gives you so many views. So many ideas. So many things to get your political awareness awake and working. Some of it is funny. Some of it is heartfelt but it's about US. Yes!!!!! We can hear people speaking and we can know what they think. The more we do it, the more we'll add depth and breadth to our political arena. We'll even hear competent and educated women speaking and contributing to their country and being HEARD. We'll create a wonderland of thought and idea...and then those well worn trails, that typical polly speak, will sound like the well worn ruts they are. We need to get out of the rut and on with living. We are suffocating as we are. We are much more interesting and dynamic than "they" believe. There is more to us and it than they think, so let us give them a bloomin' run for their money. Let's have fun!!

Web paedophile is Canadian man

Web paedophile is Canadian man: police : "Some 350 people have reportedly given information after the appeal, which Noble said was a “remarkable” response."

Wonderful! The more we do it the better it will become. We have to get out form under the rocks, cast off our worry and fear and just get on with restoring the balance. These are our children. Our grand children...we are doing a great job of fronting up and the police are co operating internationally to help us. Fantastic!!!

7 held as drug ring smashed

AdelaideNow... 7 held as drug ring smashed: "'This investigation is a further example of the ability of SAPOL to effectively investigate, disrupt and prosecute those involved in drug offences,' he said."

There was a turning point a few months back where we decided enough was enough and we were going to unite and get rid of these drugs because it was affecting all of us. It was harming our young, disrupting our living, creating break ins, havoc...some really unpleasant stuff. We decided to confront it and because we have , the police are more confident and they have been working hard on our behalf to get to the bottom of the networks. The discoveries are only making it so clear just how much it has spread and how deeply embedded it is . Every group we break, every house we find is helping to stop this. Our children have a chance just to live. We are saying, sorry, we don't want this and people are getting a bit more peace of mind. Yes, it's all money driven but the cost to us has been huge and you can start to see why...so many people are involved and we are surrounded by labs and hydroponics and they have got good at it. We need to stay alert because there are fewer and fewer poor souls on the street and more and more walkers and happy people. This may well be the land of opportunity but it shouldn't be the land of opportunism. I thank the police for being so persistent.

Water tanks spark killer mozzie warning

Water tanks spark killer mozzie warning : "Residential water tanks are helping to drought-proof the nation, but experts say if they are not maintained properly they may pose a major health risk."

Indeed . It is something we need to educate the public about. Older Australians would know because some of them would have been brought up in houses running off rainwater. Then we plumbed everything. Certainly we have had fewer mosquitoes but the warmer climate, the water storage and then the changing generations mean we have forgotten or we do not know how to maintain tanks. It doesn't take 5 minutes to get mosquitoes in still water. We all used to burn mosquito zappers as a matter of course...those awful coils. We need some advice.

Iemma 'deeply disturbed' by primary school ecstasy reports

Iemma 'deeply disturbed' by primary school ecstasy reports : "'The teachers and the police took swift and decisive action but it is deeply disturbing.'"

It is disturbing and yes, we have to wait for the facts and the teachers and police need to be congratulated for being so on the ball. It may mean that our young folk cannot keep their innocence and there has been much talk about how our children are not allowed to be children anymore. It means they have to be taught about the difference between sweets and "medication" and that young children are now people who have to be watched. I am curious to know where the girl got the tablets. Adults need to be very mindful of what they put where . I hope the children are okay and I feel for their parents because they must be finding this difficult to deal with.

Y!7 Election 07

Y!7 Election 07: "Here is a summary of the policies of the highest-profile parties in the 2007 Federal Election, along with their historical background."

Go on, get into it. Enjoy yourself in spite of the twaddle. Get into the facts, the fun, the fascinating and the frivolous. The site gets you up and going and is very enthusiastic. Plenty to consider, a balance of laughs and interactivity. We need some gusto and with your support the site will grow stronger and heaven only knows we need to get our teeth stuck into politics because the leadership is so hacknied and predictable. We get what we are prepared to accept and we need to look at the facts, the information, the perspectives and really think about this...and have a joke or two along the way. It's up to us.I'd like to think it can stay unbiased because we are fed up with loading the prose and taking potshots or snide remarks.

The bare facts about 'naked DSL'

The bare facts about 'naked DSL' - Wireless & BroadBand - Connectivity: "'What we're seeing is there are an increasing number of people that have a mobile phone and use the mobile phone and don't need the fixed phone, but they of course do need access to broadband, and this [naked DSL], for example, allows them to buy a broadband connection without having the need to buy a telephone connection,' Mr Budde said."

My brother in law appears to do something like this and has shifted from his cable connection and his fixed phone. I haven't had a real chance to talk to him yet. he switched over as soon as he found a deal and I was surprised how fast he had it all up and running. His only comment so far seems to be that his broadband is not as fast as cable but the cost saving more than compensates because his connection is still pretty fast. I guess by Christmas he'll have a better idea. This will have to be spelled out to people because a lot won't understand the implications and the benefits to them. How does the connection work without a fixed line? My modem is plugged into the landline. For me it all seems a bit vague and perhaps even magical!

John Howard a 'shining example'

John Howard a 'shining example' : "'The Australian prime minister, John Howard, is even further behind than you are ... yet he has gone to the country in apparently good cheer, making a brave appeal to the voters: 'Love me or loathe me the Australian people know where I stand on all the major issues'.'"

This is so not true. Mr. Howard kept us hanging about like the proverbial stale bottles and now it seems like Ground Hog day. He had to call an election and he just kept hanging on. I suspect someone told him to get a wriggle on. He has been in power a long time...Gordon Brown has just taken over and is getting a feel for it all, especially after the baffling behaviour of Mr. Blair...so don't use Mr. Howard as an example except of power without height!

Help us, we're sinking, says Niue

Help us, we're sinking, says Niue : "'The majority of the people in the world are helpless. We have to tell those people who are major players to take some big responsibility ... We are their brothers. For goodness sake, do something,' he said."

Tiny islands are in danger of being submerged and this plays on their minds all the time. They do not have the resources we have...so they are not polluting like we are, so while we talk about tax cuts and whatever else might win an election, what about the real issues? What about our global responsibility?Something we care about very deeply. We don't want all these climate disasters and to lose nations underwater is horrible and it is even more horrible we are not listening. Well, we are, politicians are not. Where are the plans and programmes which will reassure us? Reassure our neighbours? They speak and we say nothing. Leaders plan and it's all about money. We care about people.

Signal problems delay trams

Signal problems delay trams: "The trams, which at the time were supposed to run every 7.5 minutes, were not running for at least 40 minutes from about 2.30pm."

The running in problems will annoy us but they will not put us off and we'll understand. If work was anything to go by today, we were all pretty excited about the new trams and the way it'll open up the city and help with the traffic flow. With any luck we can cut down cars in the city and help contribute to a cleaner environment. We were also talking of how important it is to get the rail and light rail systems going for the outlying areas. it'll connect us better and take the strain off the roads and help provide us all with cleaner air. It's the way to go...safe, reliable , public transport. Roll on the trams!

China, India buy our trash

AdelaideNow... China, India buy our trash: "Mr Harvey could not put a figure on the value of South Australia's exported waste but a 2006 Productivity Commission report outlines the 'significant growth' in the value of recyclable materials exported Australia-wide between 1994-95 and 2004-05."

Oh, how extraordinary. We need more details and more direction. I have spent this last week getting more stuff recycled. I have it down to a fine art now, but I tend to get a bit lost in the wash every so often so I go through my home and get the stuff into the right containers and get the show on the road again. it's the fine tuning. We need to be kept informed as to what is needed where. I still have a real problem with e-waste. The ink cartridges are not a problem, it's old monitors and printers...which are piling up! I haven't found an easy way to deal with this. I was prompted into action by a small business which did a letterbox drop for metal and listed what we could recycle. They came to pick it up. It was all so easy. Same with a clothing small business which was trying to get emergency clothing for the homeless. My whole street responded perfectly to both these calls. We need the information. We'll act!

Mr X shows he's no party person

Mr X shows he's no party person : "Mr Xenophon, 48, has also struggled with his health. He had surgery in 2002 for a heart condition. A recurring back problem leaves him ashen-faced with pain at times. But he insisted yesterday he was physically up to the demands of campaigning for federal parliament, and of shuttling back and forth to Canberra, should he win."

Nick Xenophon is one of our favourites. he does do funny media things. He's animated, intelligent, interesting and, above all, committed to the things we care about. His health may or may not be a problem. I have an older friend who had a triple bypass years ago before we got good at it. He has motorcycled around Australia, kept up a demanding job and been on some long haul overseas trips. He consulted regularly with his doctor, but these days we have a whole swag of very good, very knowledgeable health consultants who can really make a difference. It's about knowledge and personal power. I think Nick Xenophon would have what we need to help us move forward. He is very articulate about what we care about. I wish him well and should like to think he will put his health first and get all the backup he needs to continue to be the community leader he is.

Lobby group sends SMS enrolment reminder

Lobby group sends SMS enrolment reminder : "Under changes to the electoral law, new voters have until 8pm on the day writs for the election are issued instead of the previous seven-day grace period."

Come on, get onto it and make sure everyone you know is enrolled. The time line for enrolment is greatly reduced and ends 8pm Monday...not a good day to get yourself organised. Enough of the silly carry on, let's just be better at playing their game than they are. It really is very silly. If you are not sure where to start, GetUp will give you some ideas to consider. They are also sending our thousands of text messages to remind people to enrol. This is leadership.

Sore groin? Try pepper!

Sore groin? Try pepper : "THE compound that makes chili peppers spicy can ease the pain that follows groin surgery, Danish researchers have found."

The mind boggles! Rather you than me, but go for it, the Danish research seems pretty solid. Hot stuff, heh?

Phantom vibrations

Phantom vibrations shake 'crackberry' addicts: "Many mobile phone addicts and BlackBerry junkies report feeling vibrations when there are none, or feeling as if they're wearing a cell phone when they're not."

I love it...phantom vibrations. The phone you're having when you are not having a phone. These are not good vibrations. These are pretend, imagined ones because you are so used to vibrating ..you just keep on vibrating. There are so many jokes in this. Brilliant.

Let the games begin!!

Our 60 something year old Prime Minister ,going on 6, has gone off to Canberra , presumably to set the election date after he has had a real oldie attack of of totally vague and I know something you don't. He has led us a merry dance as oldies do when they get cantankerous , but I don't hold it against him...much.He has been Prime Minister for a long time and he probably will not be Prime Minister for long even if he does win the next election...if ever he gets over it and decides to announce it . He is the Prime Minister. He has prided himself on competence...and now we see him carrying on, holding our country to ransom and actually standing in the way of production.

Anyway, I declare the games open! Batten down the hatches. Recycle the brochures after you have kept fit by flying them as paper aeroplanes and ask your local MP to campaign online and put the money towards food or housing or your choice. Save carbon and turn off the TV for the next month. Listen to debates and information...and watch now how the Greens will play a role. They have been very calm and sane. Kevin Rudd had better watch out for the tricks and the electronic voting systems controllers need to consult with Switzerland as they have now hack proofed electronic voting protocol...what a great country...and what a great gift to elections.

So enjoy election 2007 and watch it all unfold.

France and England out to grab second chance

Rugby-World-France and England out to grab second chance: "When France lost the tournament's opening game to Argentina and England were hammered 36-0 by South Africa both were condemned to daunting quarter-finals against New Zealand and Australia respectively."

The Stade de France will be hotting up, the atmosphere will be electric and France will be holding its breath. Last time when England won by that magical goal it was breathtaking but so gut wrenching for the French. When they win the Hexagone just takes off for days . The French are beside themselves heartfelt with joy. At this stage the French are very modest, steady and serious about their skills base. They actually have some lovely players with great personalities , but I would say this has been a feature in many of the teams. Rugby players just seem like nice guys , most of them...and then you have the ones who really let the team down. I don't know how many of us will be up and at it at 5am tomorrow to watch this semi final...but a lot of the French will have their eyes on Chabal. He's a bit of a legend really...and then Monday it's South Africa versus Argentina. It would be good fro France to come back and meet Argentina in the final....but England were hammered by South Africa, maybe they'd like a second chance against them. It'll be good. The rugby has been good even though I don't follow it much.

Man charged with child porn offences

Man charged with child porn offences : "Police confiscated a camera and charged him with possession of child pornography, filming for indecent purpose and two counts of resisting arrest."

I assume someone tipped off the police and that is great. That the police acted promptly, caught him and got hold of yet another child pornographer is even better. These are our children, our grandchildren, our nieces and nephews, and we have to just face up to it all no matter how disturbing . It's no use being weak kneed and wimpy, we have just got to take action and it would appear that is what we are doing right across the world. We linked up internationally to chase a child pornographer to ground, the French police are having a serious targeting of child pornographers, the Germans are, the British appear to be...and we have been on their case for a while. It's about not standing by. It's about acting and getting on their case. I blogged before that it appears to happen often enough for it to be a thing that people do. We don't know why they do it. We need to stop them, catch them, work on them to find out what it at the bottom of it, because it has gone on for years, centuries and it's time to stop. It really is time to let little kids be little.

Tramline shelters produce power

Tramline shelters produce power: "'The panels are transparent, so you can see the sky but still provide shade, removing 90 per cent of heat and 98.5 per cent of UV,' Mr Stargatt said."

This is fantastic. This is planning. This is using your brains and your dollar. This is Adelaide at its best. I think everyone will be pleased once the trams get going. it's true we have had to put up with a lot with all the redevelopment. We're a bit like Frankfurt...we never stop rebuilding, but there have been some good changes. I am sad to see the sitting blocks go in Light Square because I thought they were cool, but I am curious to see how that will all be changed.

More go online to find top end fashion

AdelaideNow... More go online to find top end fashion: "Time-poor bargain hunters who are wary of big businesses are turning to the internet and visiting online sites to shop for their latest outfits."

Silly me went to buy a plain black cardigan for work today. Oh how silly. Apart from the fact it was hard to find well cut, classic office wear which used to be easy to find in Adelaide I had assistants who didn't know what a cardigan was, let alone a button up one which wasn't made of synthetic material, had poorly set frills, was very low cut and made of material which looked bad and would "bag" in no time at all and had dangly bits or oddly placed ruching. Adelaide could always come up with good quality office wear. So no, inspite of our changeable weather there were no little cardigans and no "petits pulls". You'd expect the plain cardigan and the little plain jumper to be a must in all shops...so yes, I am going online and it's true, I am shopping online for clothes because the quality has vanished.

Howard clearing the decks for election

AdelaideNow... Howard clearing the decks for election: "'Obviously, by definition it's getting closer,' he said on Southern Cross radio this morning."

You have to wonder , don't you? This is our leader speaking about a federal election. How little is he? I think his problem is that he has thoroughly enjoyed being the Prime Minister of Australia. He is active and alert and has enjoyed all the plotting, planning, interfering and bossing people around. He has grown in the role and he has made it very much his own...the problem being , of course, is that we live in a democracy and he is running out of time whether he wins again or not. He is not going to be the Prime Minister of Australia, a job he has lived, breathed and loved. He doesn't want to let go, so we have the little kid games as he tries to deal with it all psychologically. In the meantime we are a ship afloat not particularly going anywhere and no-one can really get their teeth into anything. We are well and truly ready to move on because we have changed. We need leadership which reflects our change and which can take us forward with confidence and strength into an international arena which cares about human beings, equity, the environment a place for the modern woman...in short , a government which can take us into the future instead of constantly spinning us back into the past....and we do need to say sorry to the Aborigines, not because we feel responsible, but as a mark of respect in terms of acknowledging their suffering and demise when white people settled their country. If we say sorry , it means we have noticed and we want them to be a part of us so that we walk alongside them and they walk alongside us. That's why we need to change now, because we are fed up with singling out different groups....so , we'll hang about waiting, shall we?

Hicks' lawyer receives award for hard work

Hicks' lawyer receives award for hard work : "Major Mori was presented with a civil justice award by the Australian Lawyers Alliance at their national conference in Hobart today."

Couldn't be more deserving and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. He sees it as having done his job and yes, there is a school of thought that would argue you should not be thanked for doing your job. Major Mori worked hard on behalf of David Hicks' rights and, by default, the rights of our citizens. He was working for one of our citizens when our government was silent. He was doing his job, but he did it very well and very effectively. Major Mori is a decent human being with integrity who is skilled in his job . I am glad his work on our behalf has been formally recognised because he has allowed our justice to prevail. At one stage he was standing there alone. He does not lack courage.

EI strikes university campus

EI strikes university campus : "'The study activities of two research students, and about 90 students in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Bachelor of Applied Science will be affected by the new protocols."

Adversity can be a great teacher. It means even our research fellows and undergraduates will have first hand knowledge of something which has had far reaching consequences in this country. Experience is a great teacher and you never forget the lessons. It all came from one horse and now so many horses and people have been affected. Our collective knowledge will be great. Our capacity to link up and problem solve will be enhanced. It's awful. We have kept quiet but we have been thinking about our four legged friends, their owners, trainers and those who care. It is awful...but we shall be so much wiser and stronger for the experience. We'll be bloomin' invincible because Australia is currently operating as one. It's a wake up call and we have woken up because our four leggeds need us.

Stop wasting money, Rudd tells PM

Stop wasting money, Rudd tells PM : "Prime Minister John Howard should stop wasting time and money and call the federal election, Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd says."

Mr. Howard is way overdue for calling our federal election. It's at the stage where it's an abuse of power because no country should be held to ransom like this. It makes it difficult for anyone to be anyone or do anything in the political and business arena because we are currently in a state of limbo. To hijack a country in this way is both costly and uncalled for. The last federal election cost over $100 million dollars. Put that into hospitals and schools and we'd be state of the art. Put it into equipment for the disabled, housing for the homeless, food for the hungry and our country would be looking fit and well. Mr. Howard has been a prime minister who has kept us informed and that has been a good thing but he has chosen some very expensive ways of doing that. I got a brochure today about NetAlert. I do not need it. I valued and appreciated the one on Superannuation. We have had some pretty expensive brochures and Mr. Howard has put money here there and everywhere without actually consulting anyone. He just does it. It doesn't actually go through the democratic process. This is our money. We need to decide whether we wouldn't be better off sharing it in community things like roads and public transport, hospitals..blah, blah. In this day and age politicians need to come up to speed with the Net...and I am thankful they have all got into the social networking and made efforts to use technology. The most obvious thing is to get a government site to rally these documents which are printed and posted at great expense. A site which notifies us of new documents, election dates, current parliamentary discussion...like the powerful stem cell debate. It would save time and money and be far more effective. This current state of affairs needs to stop because weekly we are watching vast sums go all over the place and the country cannot tolerate that...water for farmers! Spend the money on getting our food into proper production. So let's get on with it so we can move onwards as we have to. No going back now. The past is gone.

Psychiatrists call for specialised unit for Tas adolescents & children

Psychiatrists call for specialised unit for Tas adolescents & children - : "There have been calls for a specialised hospital unit in Tasmania to deal with children and teenagers who have serious mental illnesses."

Oh what a breakthough. We have acknowledged we have adolescents with mental illnesses and that they need specialised care. We have come a long way. Every capital city should have a specialist mental health unit for teenagers because it is the prime time for mental illnesses to become more evident and it is critical to get in early with the strategies and the treatments. Tasmania is a good place to start but let this unroll across Australia because parents, teachers, other health workers all need a central resource and a central information point to help address some of the critical issues related to adolescent mental health. Parents need reassuring and they are the prime target for support and backbone in this mental health approach because schools and medical have many other things to address . I just think it is fantastic.

Employers concerned about graduate skills

Employers concerned about graduate skills: report : "A new report has recommended making skills like communication and problem-solving a mandatory and assessable part of university degrees."

University? I am so embarrassed. I apologise we have no idea what education is. Thinking, communication, problem solving are strategies which can be taught at a very young age. Speak with well educated primary aged children. They have all of these requirements and it is blatantly obvious. If children do not have these things then parents and early childhood teachers need to be looking at how you develop thinking, literate children who can converse in a thoughtful manner. It's the nonsense of 3 sentences is enough, a grunt will suffice and Maths has too much content to be gripping which pulls us all undone. We need to value education and knowledge and we certainly have the tools to make it all palatable. Our job is to socialise our children. They should not be at uni if they cannot communicate and cannot solve problems...listen to erudite academics instead of this clap trap and you will know what I mean.

Peacock Problems

The Age: : "English aristocrat Baronet Sir Benjamin Slade claims a 'gay' peacock caused 4000 ($A9000) damage to a 'peacock blue' Lexus car owned by an employee by trying to have sex with it. He told insurers the bird had to be gay because peahens are brown and only peacocks are blue."

My friends had a peacock and a peahen but the peacock did the same as this one in the news. Every time their friends arrived in the electric blue car, the peacock just wouldn't leave it alone. At first , it was funny, but then the peacock scratched the lovely paint work of their car...and no, it's not cheap to get repairs done on cars. I don't know what it means but a good ornithologist ought to know. It's very curious behaviour.

Workers' cancers 'underestimated'

Workers' cancers 'underestimated': "But the authors of the new study say that is a gross underestimate, which fails to take account of new chemicals, new under-regulated industries and the number of women in work."

I don't think we should underestimate the air we breath and I think we should study it. I now know more people with breast cancer and lymphoma than I have ever known. The cases just keep popping up and young people seem to be particularly allergy prone. I think we should all study the air we breathe and get to the bottom of it. You cannot dismiss 6,000 work related cancer deaths. That's a lot of parents and relatives. It is 6,000 people. They just cannot be discounted statistically like that. It's 6,000 too many if the causes are preventable and that's why we research and why we have technology...so we can learn, spread information and look after ourselves and our communities.

Australia in giant wind farm plan

Australia in giant wind farm plan: "The ambitious development would transform this dusty corner of Australia's interior."

Broken Hill is hardly a dusty hole. It is a legendary venue which encapsulates our colonial history, our driving force for art and our awesome outback. Broken Hill is legendary, so much so a considerable number of visual productions have been filmed there. The scenery doesn't need a lift at all...it's extraordinary and has been the inspiration for much art. Pro Hart was born there. If there is to be a wind farm development there to help us regenerate renewable energy then that is in keeping with the fact that Broken Hill has a long history of driving Australia. See you there.

Drinking marathon saves poisoned tourist

Drinking marathon saves poisoned tourist : "After running out of pharmaceutical-grade alcohol used to help stop the poison turning toxic in the stomach, staff of the north Queensland hospital had to give the man rounds of rum, scotch and vodka."

I bet there are a few people who wouldn't mind being treated like that for some ailment! Poor guy. It doesn't say why he had ingested poison found in anti-freeze. Given he is a tourist it is a good thing Mackay Base Hospital can think on its feet. The family , presumably in Italy still have a relative thanks to the staff thinking on their feet. I hope he will be okay. What a scare.

Driade Kosmo : The White Snow Kingyo Dessert Plate

Driade Kosmo : Product : The White Snow Kingyo Dessert Plate: "A very bold departure from your average dessert plate, The White Snow Kingyo Dessert Plate is a striking black color with two equally vibrant and life-like goldfish at its center."

Get away from it all and go and drool over this superb collection of designer collection tableware which is not available in Australia from what I can tell. I'd love this goldfish plate. It is so superb and so beautiful.

Hot Pods

Police fear flood of hot iPods : "'Obviously in order for the offenders in this instance to obtain any money they will have to try and sell these Ipods and video cameras,' Detective Inspector Hartwell said."

Right enough. Don't buy one, but this kinds of digital equipment is easily stolen and easily used. Does it have a digital signal when it goes on a computer? Plug in equipment like this needs to be able to register itself on the Net when its plugged in. I hope they find out who stole the stuff because I really so not have time for thieves. Let them work and buy their own stuff.

Music industry has Aussie pirates in the crosshairs

Music industry has Aussie pirates in the crosshairs : "'We would hope that the ISPs and the record companies could come up with an alternative solution,' said MIPI general manager Sabiene Heindl."

Yes, a solution which fits modern technology and living. In lots of ways file sharing is encouraged. In lots of ways breaking down the barriers and making the connections across the planet is what we are about in 2007. You have Net friends and they are like other friends - you want to show them things and share things with them. The Net can be as much a home as your own home is, it's that you have virtual callers. I had a photos of my Canadian friend's baby which was born in her country within minutes of the birth. It was just as moving as in real life. I know about piracy and its implications.I do not support piracy. What I do not like is that you are charged but there is no hard copy. There is no album artwork. It's all bare bones.. . .profit. I still buy my CDs and may well be the only person who does but I really value the artwork, the song words, the inside bits and pieces you get....and I have a copy of what I bought. We can block behaviour pretty easily these days. If you don't want people to file share..stop the sites and stop the IP addresses. We can be identified , it's not that hard. So I do not like this notion of entrapment. The same as kids gaily cut and paste text and images to make their work. They do it because they can and it seems normal. They wouldn't cut up your books and magazines and they wouldn't take your photos out of you albums. So we need a virtual barrier. In the real world we have locks, walls, safes, shops...we have barriers which guide our behaviour. We know not to drive on the footpath. We have signifiers which modify how we manage our lives. Put the barriers in and if people break those then they are the same as they are in the real world.
