Puppets give orphan birds a hand

Puppets give orphan birds a hand :

"She is hand-feeding the birds, hiding her hand in a sock puppet to prevent them bonding with humans."

Human beings can be so wonderful and it's amazing how quickly Australians will rally to save animals in distress. They always work with the animals and find out their needs. So people have been sewing sock puppets to save the baby maggies after the storms which did so much damage. That is so inventive and kind.

Hairier males a lioness turn-off

Hairier males a lioness turn-off :

"Zoologists have discovered that the more impressive the mane, the more likely lionesses are to turn away in favour of a balder mate."

We don't seem to much like a lot of hair everywhere either. Odd that.

Power bills could be higher for thousands

Power bills could be higher for thousands :

"However, Mr Conlon said if the Commonwealth believed it could persuade the states to abandon price capping, it must believe in 'fairies at the bottom of the garden'."

Deregulation and privatisation have meant higher prices everywhere in the world. Business is about profit and productivity. It is not about supplying people with something at a reasonable price. It's about large salaries for a few, share prices. It is not about looking after the majority of people. Market forces are about how much you can charge and get away with it and electricity is something we are dependent upon now. An economy is made up of dependents. A society allows people to be independent and to function as individuals. Economies create consumers and then make them dependent by removing alternatives. It's a vicious world out there and we accepted it. Mr. Conlon has made a very valid point.

Demoted British army goat redeemed

Demoted British army goat redeemed after royal blunder :

"'Billy was honoured to receive his promotion of Lance Corporal by the Colonel of the Royal Welsh Regiment, Brigadier Roderick Porter,' British Forces Cyprus spokesman captain Crispin Coates told AFP."

Billy was made a private for not keeping instep at the Queen's birthday celebrations. He has now been made up to Lance Corporal again by being the perfect goat he is. A Canadian animal rights group had lodged a protest. I am relieved Billy has been allowed to be an honoured part of the regiment again.

Companies 'lead push for makeovers'

Companies 'lead push for makeovers' :

"'For better or worse, companies are pushing people to adopt identity strategies in order to maximise their chances within the work environment.'"

Well, there you go. Beauty really is only skin deep and if you have to tart up the surface to succeed in the corporate world, then it's only skin deep and it will fall like a pack of cards. Look forward to the return of people of substance. Fancy being afraid of depth!!

Brilliant Blend for future of tourism

AdelaideNow... Brilliant Blend for future of tourism:

"Launched in January, South Australia. A Brilliant Blend makes SA the only state to have its own 'brand'.

'For the first time there is an opportunity for things other than tourism to be linked to it,' Prof Brown said."

Good point. The Brilliant Blend can and does apply to more than just tourism and the ad which goes with it has a really good visual impact. It does sum us up in lots of ways. I don't know that it will take that long to get lift off because South Austrlains already know we have a brilliant blend and we know what it means but we'd never call it that. We'd say we have a good mix or a good blend here. We know everything inthis state mixes well and it gives us some good choices. We know because we have travelled and we have seen a lot of places. We are very appreciative of other lands and other cultures but we always come back here and we always stay here. We don't want to be anywhere else because of the mix. It's a good place to spring board and it's a great state to kick back and relax or bring up children. The brand , as it is so trendily called...talk about money talks! ...is already a part of us. It's about quantifying it and representing it. Like the ad. We'll open a book or pick up some photos and just look at the vineyards or the coast and we'll just say, "Just take a look at that." Every morning on the way to work I have a million dollar view. I have called it a million dollar view all my life and I cannot believe it's my view on the way to work. I feel so lucky. That's SA. We are small enough to care but big enough to stage world events when we want to. That is pretty good.

High-tech rules of engagement

AdelaideNow... High-tech rules of engagement:

"Give us machines that work simply and safely out of the box, without the need for layer upon layer of protective updates and fixes."

Exactly!! If I had to keep up dating or patching my car or tele I'd not own either. We get what we are prepared to accept. It's all very silly, but it's all very complex too. I guess we accept it because there are some real highs with computing and they compensate for the messy implementation dips. One day it'll all work and we'll wonder what to do with our free time?!

Arson strike force to be reinstated

Arson strike force to be reinstated :

"Police Minister Carl Scully says the government will re-establish strike Force Tronto which was set up to investigate the 2001 Christmas-New Year bushfires that destroyed more than 100 homes and was disbanded afterwards."

Arson in this country has to be one of the most heinous cromes. It is something which is inexcusable and unforgiveable. The damage, the death, the strain and the complete waste of resources is something which cannot be excused. The NSW fire fighters have been doing it hard year after year. Their task has been relentless and exhausting. To think someone just lit the fires is beyond comprehension. The anti arson task force will help but we are just going to have to be more community minded and our children will need to be brought up that way.

Earth's temperature nears million-year high.

Earth's temperature nears million-year high. :

"Earth may be close to the warmest it has been in the last million years, especially in the part of the Pacific Ocean where potentially violent El Nino weather patterns are born."

We are completely derelict in our duties as keepers of the planet. We have lost the rhythm of life. We have lost the change of seasons. We are steeped in alarming weather changes and all we do is talk. Talk, talk, talk. We do nothing really to isolate and deal with the things which are causing these degrading changes to our environment. We haven't really rallied and made a decision to turn back what we have done. So why is the weather machine broken and why is it all happening so fast? Our greenhouse gases have not increased that much, I wouldn't have thought, and yet our weather has become very quixotic, lethal and not at all real weather. As a planet this ought to be right at the top of the agenda and we ought to be working together on it. No one seems to be much worried we'll have droughts. Why is that? There are investigations, committees, bodies, forums but we need some global action and we need to be clear about the cause and effect relationships we identify.

Costello questions Trujillo's $9m salary.

Costello questions Trujillo's $9m salary. :

"Mr Costello is demanding that the board explain why Mr Trujillo is being paid $8.7 million this year when the company's share price is falling."

So who's the fool? Certainly not Mr. Trujillo. He is laughing all the way to the bank. Telstra was one of our very successful companies.

Burglars bolt after heady shock

Burglars bolt after heady shock :

"Burglars in Vienna opted for a speedy getaway after they found eight severed human heads when breaking into the basement of an apartment building, Austrian police said."

Does in their street cred, heh? They had broken into a dentist's who was using the heads for research....but he may be out of line for not storing research material properly. They were in a chest, in the basement...I gather research material would have to be registered?

Bus and rail ban for lout

Bus and rail ban for lout :

"Last financial year, 5270 fines were issued. People were fined $170 each for breaches including not being in possession of a valid travel concession card, not having a valid ticket, not possessing student ID cards, failing to buy a ticket and paying a wrong fare."

No apologies need be made for what has occurred. Public transport operates on a level of trust and we need to be quick to act if the trust is abused. We like to use public transport. It's something tourists are dependant upon too. When you go elsewhere and you see people can just travel and pay for their tickets, then that's a good thing. Public transport has to be viable. As soon as it becomes non- paying or unsavoury then you run into a lot of problems. I don't like it when people try to be annoying or they try to get away with what they can get away with. Given how many people travel this is a small number, but way too many!

Staff deny Katrina mercy killings

Staff deny Katrina mercy killings :

"Few in New Orleans believe the charges and prefer to view the three women as heroes who cared for hundreds of patients trapped in a sweltering hospital with no electricity, running water or rubbish removal."

I cannot judge from a distance. What we saw was unbelievably bad. It took far too long for any help, any reaction, any support to occur. That was clear. It meant people were abandoned there in horrendous heat, surrounded by devastation and flooding and they were just having to survive the best way they could. We looked on and wondered how on earth they were managing it all and how on earth they were going to manage it. The people in New Orleans at the time will know the truth of this, but had they got help and support sooner, then maybe people trying to help others would not find themselves in this position. Leaving them to cope alone for so long is the crime and not getting the area back into good state of repair which can show its great spirit is truly sad.

Number's up for bumbling thief

Number's up for bumbling thief :

"AN Italian thief who lost his mobile phone while robbing an elderly lady, called his own number to track it down - and unwittingly arranged a date with police."

They say revenge is sweet. I bet the old lady is chuckling. Well done!!

Reef 'still safe' after Irwin death

Reef 'still safe' after Irwin death :

"'It's a very, very safe activity and we get a lot of people out there in their 70s and 80s snorkelling for their first time and coming back absolutely raving over the fact that they've been able to see these stingrays and other animals out there in their natural habitat,' Mr McKenzie told ABC radio."

I'm with Debra Messing. I'd be asking for a double too. Thing is, if Steve Irwin, who was so comfortable in those sorts of conditions, was at risk, what hope is there for mere mortals? I know many Australians will just get back in the water and life will go on and that's probably how it should be, because it is so unheard of to go to the Great Barrier Reef and not come back. Everyone raves about it and most divers consider it the best place in the world for diving. Let them. Those people who are fearful need to be understood and allowed for. I even tried to watch Australia's Deadliest Sea Creatures which was on last night, thinking being well informed would help. The programme was supposed to be helping us come to terms with our environment. By the time I was half way through I thought I'd never walk on the beach again, never slosh through the water and swimming was well and truly out of the question. It really put the wind up me and yet I believe it was very well made and the doctor talking about how to deal with sting ray attacks was absolutely excellent. That information should be out there. The guy who was showing us sting rays was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic...but those big rays going over head were like giant space ship and then I got to the 3 metre jelly fish and that was that. I could not look at the sharks. So...so much for being well informed. I now believe ignorance is bliss!!!

For women, by women

AdelaideNow... For women, by women:

"The SA Taxi Council is pushing for an equal opportunity laws exemption for the move, aimed at bringing women drivers and passengers back to an industry rocked by allegations of sexual assault."

Certainly something has to be done about taxis. Pink taxis? Very girlie but given what has occurred not such a bad idea. Most taxi drivers are good and safe but there have been some bad eggs around the place and it has been horrible. What about the men? And what about the taxi drivers who haven't been safe? We might be able to fix the women's issues this way, but there is the rest of it to solve as well. It's been pretty bad because it has affected some really decent drivers out there.

Opals take out world championship

Opals take out world championship. :

"Australia were crowned women's world basketball champions for the first time overnight, with Penny Taylor's 28 points leading the Opals to a 91-74 victory over Russia in the gold medal match in Sao Paulo."

This is fantastic news because the Russian team is not an easy team to beat. Our Opals have a huge following and we are enormously proud of them. They are classic sports women who are fantastic role models for us all. Their positive, optimism is always refreshing and their level of expertise is clear. Great news!!

We lost!

We lost! By 10 points and in one quarter. BUGGA! Piddle , poo, bum, pee, bottom! BUGGA....bugga, bugga, bugga, bugga, bugga, bugga...BUGGA!!

They played so well and have had some great matches this year. They have learned such a lot this year but, yes, they still have a few things to work on. Bloody Eagles!!!

Ban on plastic bags 'not worth the cost'

Ban on plastic bags 'not worth the cost' :

"Slower checkouts and retraining of retail staff could cost more than $1 billion over the next 10 years, which would be only partially offset by the environmental benefit of removing plastic bags from the litter stream."

What an absolute cop out and such a load of tommy rot!! Honestly. It's not just about money, but I doubt it'll cost more to get rid of them. For a start most people buy the bags on sale by supermarkets and other shops. Here they have become quite a fund raiser because you get the bags for the particular shops. Then there are people who make their own bags or there are some nice calico bags put out by various groups. All of that is making money. Since we have committed ourselves to saving our environment and not using plastic bags we have moved from the transition period into the routine maintenance phase. We all carry our shopping bags now. We all decline plastic bags. Shop owners never refuse us a plastic bag nor make it difficult, but they are always pleased when we have our own bag. It's been a team effort and a really sociable thing. Many of our bags have logos so we are advertising for companies or organisations and we seem to quite like it. But the best thing is you don't see the bags blowing around everywhere. I never see them on my drive to work anymore. I never see them in the gutters any more. I don't see them along the beaches. We have got rid of one of the biggest blights to the environment here. So move your bottoms and do something good for yourselves because the bottom line is people DO NOT clean up the bags...and our check outs have not slowed down at all. They are as efficient as ever.

Thieves try to steal rail TV

Thieves try to steal rail TV :

"TWO men wearing balaclavas and using a ladder and bolt cutters tried to steal a television from a Sydney train station platform early today."

Stupid idiots. What were they thinking? Did they do it because they could? Is a railway TV actually useful? Yes...to the passengers! I am glad they didn't get it because a community runs on trust. Things shouldn't have to be bolted down all the time. I guess they are like phome vandals.

Drug baron nabbed in Caracas

Drug baron nabbed in Caracas :

"'He was the second-most-wanted man in Colombia. It was in co-operation with Colombia,' Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said in a television broadcast, boasting that his country had landed a 'big fish' from the world's No. 1 cocaine producer."

The Venezuelens are up and running!! Well done. The more of these people we catch, the better we all shall be because drugs are damaging us all and our children are so vulnerable. I know they make lots of money and some people can live very well and have wonderful life styles...but the misery and pain they cause to so many young people in such large numbers is horrific. It has nothing to do with being a party pooper. By all means let us have some fun...but not in this way. Just look at them. The users look so awful and are living so horribly. The Columbian police are obviously on the ball.

They're ba-ack!!

Mission accomplished as shuttle touches down :

"The landing 48 minutes before sunrise was a day later than planned because NASA ordered more inspections of the spacecraft's delicate skin to make sure it was safe to come home. The fear was that debris spotted floating nearby on Tuesday may have hit it."
Tell me about it. I hold my breath every time it's coming back and I become very quiet and I do a lots of hoping and wishing and...bits flying off here and space junk there and thank heavens they are back...and how cool did it look?

Focus on sickness prevention, says expert

AdelaideNow... Focus on sickness prevention, says expert:

"'A person's social status should not determine whether they live to be 40 or 80, whether they will be obese, have diabetes, lung cancer or heart disease."

Yes, this is all very sensible, but will it make money? Will you make money from preveneting illness? How much more money will be made by letting people get sick and then selling them cures and curative processes?? Tell me, is health more important than a nice bank balance?

Addict parents forced to give urine samples

AdelaideNow... Addict parents forced to give urine samples:

"The report calls for new measures to test the urine of parents believed to be drug addicts, as well testing children who are believed to have been given drugs or born drug dependent."

Quite frankly I think we do have to confront the drug issues head on whether we want to or not. They are doing a lot of damage and they are killing people in a horrible, horrible way. We have been a bit wary about dealing with it. We have hoped it would right itself. We were hoping common sense would prevail, but drugs have got a hold and with good reason. They are making a lot of money for some people. They don't care what happens. There are more users to replace the ones lost along the way. It is hard. It's tough. It's horrible. I doubt druggie parents mean to be bad parents. I doubt welfare workers are meaning to be not as good as they could be. This is no picnic. It is very hard. We just have to tackle it together, lock arms and be prepared to work it through. Those making the money are not easy to deal with. The stuff is coming at us from everywhere and in vast quantities and people take it. They take it. Then kids die. Kids are on the street. Kids are ill. By 20 they look and sound disgusting. It's all very potent and addictive so it's not something you can wean yourself from easily. The thing is not to get started and the thing is to get people early. We have to start young. It's about resetting the balance. We didn't used to have drugs and the sort of stuff which did so much damage so quickly. We didn't have so many little kids dying and so many teenagers and young 20s in such a bad way. Yes, if testing means we can identify the users then we have some hope of identifying the circles. Our customs are working their butts off trying to get the stuff as it comes in. I do wonder why people are so keen to feel so ill but I guess it's what they think they deserve and we get what we are prepared to accept. Test, test and test away. Let's make it as routine to fight it as it is to deal and use it. We are going to have to think ourselves out of this.

Burton, McLeod a risk, says Craig

ABC Sport - AFL - Burton, McLeod a risk, says Craig:

"'All those emotions, excitement, expectation of what we want to achieve as a club, [we're] confident that if we put our best footy on the ground tomorrow we're very confident that we can get a result.'"

Everyone is so excited about the Crows going up against the Eagles this weekend. There are no signs of us feeling well, we lost to them in the grand final last year, so we'd better be careful. No, we are all full of it and cannot wait and are eagerly awaiting the match. In a sad week , it has been a bright shiny light for us...so go the Crows!!!

Branson commits profits to fight global warming.

Branson commits profits to fight global warming. :

"The Virgin Group chairman says the money will be spent on renewable energy initiatives within his company and on investments in bio-fuel research, development, production and distribution, as well as projects to tackle emissions contributing to global warming."

Another shining example of the world's stars being our natural leaders. Stars from business and entertainment are doing far more to get us on the right road and to show us the way than our political leaders. They are at least taking a responsible and informed approach and putting their money with their mouth is. They are not full of platitudes but adopt an action oriented approach to the changes we need to make to create a more positive world. They are working with us and for us.

Teen rescues baby after car crash

Teen rescues baby after car crash :

"'I kept telling her that her kid was all right and kept asking her to talk to me so I knew that she would stay with me, and then the ambulance people came,' Matt Vongsykeo, 14, said today."

This young boy faced all his fears and put them aside so he could help the baby to live and give the dying mother some comfort. THis is a very courageous, caring young boy. When the time came for him to put his values on the line he chose to use his life to give the baby a chance of a life and he helped the mother to cope as she lay trapped and dying. I am sure he will have trouble coming to terms with it all, but he needs to know that was he did was just so kind, so brave and so caring. He obviously has a strong personality and some good skills.

Scientists Shocked as Arctic Polar Route Revealed

Slashdot | Scientists Shocked as Arctic Polar Route Revealed:

"European scientists indicated their shock as they noted a ship could sail from Europe's northern-most outpost directly to the pole, something that hasn't been possible during most of recorded human history."

It'll shift ocean currents, built up sea levels, increase global warming, threaten species...so what is this all about? Why now? What on earth are we doing?

Moving farewell to 'wildlife warrior'

Moving farewell to 'wildlife warrior':

"And perhaps some of it stemmed from a sense of guilt: that Irwin received greater approbation outside of Australia, certainly at the start of his television career, than at home."

If it's "kid driven", it's the way it is supposed to be. They are our arrows to the future. We were surprised about how much he had actually accomplished in his short life. We did speak about how people overseas knew more about it that than we did. But that is who we are and that is who Steve Irwin was. The children are being put first because, for them, this is a terrible blow. Young children adored him because he was big, bold and larger than life. Adolescents admired him and adults either were driven crazy by the brash exterior, at times, or just took his persona as a media personality and knew the real Steve Irwin was bigger than all of that. No guilt. We have no guilt. We have an unbelievable sense of loss. An unbelievable belief that he died before his work was done and before he had lived his life. We have a sense that this is in no way right and so our children are doing our understanding and healing for us. This morning we were divided at work as to whether Bindi or Dad was the more powerful speaker. We all felt like we belonged at the memorial service and that was a wonderful achievement for television in Australia. Steve Irwin is someone we very much regret seeing lose his life because he was so full of it and had such an impetus. This morning we accepted we had said the sort of farewell he deserved and had earned but we had this feeling that he just should not have died. I said that in my first post. You do not put Steve Irwin and dead in the same sentence. So the inspiration from his life is alive and well in our children and we shall nurture that. Not demand or drive. Just nurture.

Health system big winner in SA budget.

Health system big winner in SA budget. :

"Health spending is the big-ticket item in Treasurer Kevin Foley's fifth budget, with $640 million to be spent on the state's ailing health system over the next four years."

Educating the young, keeping everyone fit and healthy and cutting back on pollution ought to be the priorities of any government. We need fit, happy and healthy thinkers. We need people who are in control and who feel well enough to do and to produce. It's about people. Businesses keep concentrating on their profits, productivity and shareholders but a nation needs to build flexible, alert people who feel as though they can manage anything and who feel well enough to put in. Neglect health and education and the economy will also drop because people have no skills, poeple can't get adequate care and people are always worrying. Education, health and wellbeing have to come first. Then we need to look at environmental issues. Public transport improvements will help visitors and tourists and encourage us to get around without our expensive , polluting cars. The budget has tageted primary concerns. The rest can be negotiated into it. We are no good without knowledge, health and personal stability.

Time to clean PC clutter

AdelaideNow... Time to clean PC clutter:

"SEPTEMBER is the time to give your computer a spring cleaning."

I have!! I have given my computer a good cleaning and it's amazing how much junk is around and it's also amazing how many helpful programmes there are to help sort out the clutter. As a consequence my computer is faster, zippier, happier and I am feeling very virtuous. I just started shifting a couple of files and then it started raining so I couldn't go outside...and before I knew ,it I was absorbed in the big clean up...and even found some good programmes I had forgotten were on my computer!

Nuclear terrorists 'the ultimate nightmare'

AdelaideNow... Nuclear terrorists 'the ultimate nightmare':

"HUMANITY'S ultimate nightmare is terrorists with weapons of mass destruction, says Foreign Minister Alexander Downer."

Quite right. Any country with nuclear or chemical weapons is a threat to world peace. It's world peace day on 23rd September. We could chuck the weapons away and be a t peace. Now, there's a novel thought for the new millennium.

Gang using child drug couriers

Gang using child drug couriers, claims MP :

"A GANG called Rule The Streets has allegedly committed gang rapes and used nine-year-olds as drug couriers in Adelaide's northern suburbs, Parliament has been told."

It's very easy to manipulate through fear and it's very easy to manipulate when you do the unthinkable that people don't want to confront. Parents must be beside themselves and we hare going to have to adopt a hard headed, thinking approach to this. It's not the first time it's happened. We need it out in the open so we know and can close ranks. Fear stops people in their tracks and makes them very maleable. We need to go about this strategically and we need to be able to gain strength through numbers. Secret stuff always weakens a community or organisation.

Government seeks 'anti-terror formula'

Government seeks 'anti-terror formula' :

"He said the group had worked on the basis of 'metrics' – thrashing out the most likely targets on the basis of the number of people crammed into an area per square metre or by looking at crowds of certain types, such as sporting events."

The aftermath has become formulaic, but the formula for an attack isn't bottled and you might be able to work on guesstimates and your best rational guess. Since we are railroaded and blinkered in our thinking and we are trained to think in terms of formulae, then we shall not be able to predict. Eyes, ears, brains and intelligence.

Heat of passion for zoo's flock

AdelaideNow... Heat of passion for zoo's flock:

"ADELAIDE Zoo's keepers have had to find breeding partners for birds made frisky by the early warm weather."

I know, I know!!! The birds in the garden have been cooing and squawking their amorous messages all day and it's been really fun to watch and the fish have been dasing around madly. Yes, the warm weather has perked things up considerably!!! It's good the zoos are on the ball and reacting to the oddball weather with a well thought out way of helping the babies to be produced and survive. They are so cute. The kids here love ducks.

VE Commodore to Middle East

AdelaideNow... VE Commodore to Middle East:

"HOLDEN has sent its first boatload - valued at more than $2 million - of all-new VE Commodore and WM Statesman cars to the Middle East."

Why would I talk up Commodores when I don't own one? Because I know how nice they look!! The new models look really good and I know a few people who have invested their money in Commodores over the years. They look good, they are easy to repair, there are plenty of spare parts, they are great work horses but they are good for the long distances most people travel here. People who want to drive often invest in a Commodore. The country trips are easy. I don't own one because I need a lighter car. I just know family and friends think very highly of their Commodores and the new ute was a big success. It's a car which is very muc a part of the SA landscape no matter how old you are.

For SA, life just keeps getting better

AdelaideNow... For SA, life just keeps getting better:

"The Attitudes of Australians to Happiness and Social Wellbeing report says one-third of South Australians believe life in Australia is getting better."

Doesn't take much to keep us happy, really. We like our team winning. We like to know the kids are all right and we have a nice home. We'll get happy because we have a new gadget or we are throwing a BBQ. The good thing about Adeliade is people will share your excitement about anything. You might be thrilled to bits because your friends is off to tour China or Europe, but you can be just as excited because someone had their nails done or because their fish had babies. If we think Australia is getting better it will be tied to how we feel about ourselves. We like a nice latte, a walk on the beach. We like to know things are going well for other people. When things go bad we are there with the sympathy or the peace and quiet. We let people be when they are bothered as long as it is not interfering with us. When it's sunny we get floppy and a lot of Adeliadians are actually enjoying cold weather these days. We just take things as they come. We'll act when we have to. We don't like social injustice and we don't like people thinking we are stupid...but we'll joke about how long it'll take us to have a serious thought. We will discuss things in depth when we want to, but we won't if we don't feel like it. Some people think that means we're thick. We just talk to people when we think there is a need, otherwise we keep it fairly friendly. We have all, however, been talking about how far the clock has gone back and we shake our heads because we worked hard as SA to move things forward.

Drugs report shows need for cooperation

Drugs report shows need for cooperation: Ellison. :

"'We certainly want to build on that cooperation and that's why we're hosting the conference next month in Queensland to deal with a regional strategy to deal with the spread of precursor chemicals.'"

Well done. It's the only thing which works these days - the co operative, collaborative sharing of resources and intelligence. When good minds gather in a spirit of problem solving the intelligence shared, in every sense of the word, is the thing which allows us to rise above the chaos which is our world. It takes a lot of cold, hard, intellegent thinking and a solid network of people with an informed approach. We really do have a need to think ourselves out of our problems these days.

Laptop turns 'firecracker'

"More airlines are cracking down on the use of laptops in the air in the same week that a new incident was reported to have turned an IBM laptop into a 'firecracker' at a US airport."

I heard about the laptops catching on fire, but fire crackers? This is not good. What is going wrong with laptop technology. I can understand why airlines are being suitably wary. It is also a good thing for business people because it'll mean they will rest!! Slow down, everybody.

Mottram defends World Cup title

"Craig Mottram became the first Australian to defend a World Cup title with a stunning victory over Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele in the 3000 metres in Athens' Olympic stadium tonight."

He may not have got his wish at the Commonwealth Games, but all his training, planning and cool as a cucumber approach have paid off. What a winner and so well deserved because he has taken the knocks and he has just never been put off. Great role model in sport. He wastes no time on negative energy and just focusses on his next goal.

Turnbull 'takes on board' water reform plan.

Turnbull 'takes on board' water reform plan. :

"The council says Australia would be $9 billion better off if water delivery systems were overhauled."

We do have to look at water reform, water usage and how to get water! We are surrounded by rising oceans. Desalination plants have to be considered. We also need to look at industry and organisations, because some use heaps of water in production and maybe we can do without or limit water hungry businesses and organisations. It doesn't help when we have deliberately lit fires, either, so how are we going to stop the arson attacks which just suck up all our water resources. Citizenship and community effort needs to be part of our reform.

Video soldiers 'just letting off steam'.

Video soldiers 'just letting off steam'. :

"Prime Minister John Howard says the Australian troops who took videos and photographs of pranks involving guns and at least one colleague dressed as an Arab, were just letting off steam."

Maybe, maybe not. We are not there. We do not know what they are dealing with and it is very easy for us to sit here and judge when we are not in the front line. On the other hand, I should have thought they would be aware that posting such stuff on the Net would not go down well. They'd have to know that. So, it's a pretty easy way to get out of the Army, heh? No one would want to stay there, so how else do they get home?

Cabernet sunscreen a cool drop

Cabernet sunscreen a cool drop :

"It's not easy being a grape during a scorching Californian summer. But a renowned winemaker in Napa Valley has come up with an unusual - and surprisingly effective - way to stop his cherished fruit from withering on the vine: he sprays it with sunscreen."

This man is totally dedicated to his wine!! Up there for thinking! Now others are wondering about their crops. So, do we break out the bucket hats and the mini Ts as well? So, now, it's slip, slop, slap, slurp!! I love it!

Why water will be like gold

AdelaideNow... Why water will be like gold:

"A THINK TANK in the US recently prepared a study for the Pentagon that warned one of the biggest challenges facing the military this century will be short, sharp regional wars over water."

So, why do they think that? We have had water before and now we don't . Why is that? We have plenty of water for everyone and we used to have seasons and weather patterns. Now it's just a missch masch. Considering lots of areas have had floods, storms and mudslides, why would you predict wars over water? Why would you think water is going to be scarce? The ocean is rising. There is water.

SA to outlaw indecent filming

SA to outlaw indecent filming :

"It would be an offence to film or photograph someone for the sexual gratification of the person filming or others, where the person being filmed is in a state of undress or engaged in a private act, and where the person does not consent to being filmed."

I am pleased to hear this. But what about all the stuff which is plastered on the TV? I feel sorry, really sorry for the family and friends of Diane Brimble. I was pleased to see someone had brought the mother and sister some flowers because they were having to listen to all of that. It is not really for us to listen to, not is it for us to watch. The mother and sister are very strong and dignified that they have gone through all of this because that was their family and she has been plastered all over the media for us all to observe and comment on. I think families need to have more rights and at least have an opportunity to be consulted before we all get in their and watch their private business. I don't like it, as you may have gathered. Maybe the case should be sparsely dealt with and discussed after any judgement is made so the families are treated with more dignity and respect.

Mentally ill filling prisons

Mentally ill filling prisons: chaplain :

"Father Caddy estimates that up to 80 per cent of the inmates he deals with have mental health issues that require treatment - ranging from anxiety and depression through to schizophrenia."

We are actually revamping our mental health systems and it will take a bit of time. We have to look at the number of mentally ill people in jails, but the police are aware of their shortcomings and are trying to manage that better by consulting with mental health professionals. We also need to look at srug induced mental illness as opposed to other mental illnesses and whether these people need to be in the same institution. We also need to consider the relapses which can occur from certain sorts of drugs, where a person might be okay for a while and then have a psychotic episode. This chaplian has got things out into the open ans we need to deal with them. We have been going faster and faster and it's been about profit and productivity. The dall out from that is crime and mental illness. We haven't had time to deal with people as they have broken down. We have not heeded signs and in some respects we have just done things as a society which would cause more and more people to break down. We need to slow down. We need to unravel the mess because going this fast might be making lots of money but the price is extreme behaviour.

Govt calls for feedback on citizenship test.

Govt calls for feedback on citizenship test. :

"The Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration, Andrew Robb, says people must have an understanding of what makes Australia tick as well as a working level of English before becoming a citizen."

There are 240 languages spoken in Australia, not counting our aboriginal ones. Why wouldn't they be included in the count I saw?? Seems to me we have things to fix ourselves before we ask new comers to get their act together. We could fix our detention centres because they are driving people crazy and this is our gift to them. We could listen to the health professionals and develop some cultural sensitivity because we are contributing to mental health break downs of immigrants because we do not have a knowledge about language learning and cultural change. Our politicians do not learn languages like the politicians of other countries. They are not multi or bi lingual like their foreign counterparts so we should fix this. We also need to fix the people like on the Jamie Oliver in Australia programme. 28, 000 people applied for a position in his 15 restaurant. So what are we offering our young people and the state of these 15-25 year olds was largely tragic and very disturbing. This is what our country has done to young people. Ah, then the case of the abortion at 28 weeks. We abort at 28 weeks. That's a real baby. I am aghast that we espouse that and then think to criticise those coming from countries where they are really struggling to keep their children alive. So, let's sort out our own back yard , shall we, and stop diverting ourselves from the real issues?

Dairy cow to get artificial leg

Dairy cow to get artificial leg :

"Heifer Theresa had one of her hind legs amputated two months ago after falling down an embankment.

Last week her Tasmanian owners Anne and Geoff Heazlewood made a plea for someone to make a new leg - and have since received four offers."

This is such a good story. Theresa is pregnant, so not having her leg has made things more difficult for her. It is so nice to know there have been offers to make her a new leg and that, in fact, she will be the proud owner of a new once. It'll mean she will not damage herself while she is pregnant and it's probably an Austrlian first. It doesn't get better than that!

$98m plan for jobs training

$98m plan for jobs training :

"An extra $4.5 million will be spent to encourage more students to study maths and science in high school and $19.1 million will go towards provide customised training for key industry sectors."

Don't you have to get the students to be at school first? A number of people have observed lately that there are an awful lot of school age children out and about during the day at shopping centres, around the streets and in town. They can't all be overseas visitors.

Stars join Darfur campaign

Stars join Darfur campaign :

"The Archbishop of Canterbury has joined the likes of musicians Annie Lennox and Elton John, Body Shop founder Anita Roddick and shoe designer Patrick Cox in signing the open letter to the Prime Minister."

It's stars and church leaders who are the real humanitarians in our world. They have , on more than one occasion, shown some real leadership and a genuine concern for humanity. Our real leaders are showing how international co operation can be utilised to help relieve the abject circumstances of others and they are showing us a way of repairing this constant need to live in the last millennium. We really do have to leave it behind and find a better way of existing as human beings on the planet.

Will GM crops deliver benefits to farmers

Will GM crops deliver benefits to farmers:

"Biotechnology companies make many impressive claims about genetically engineered crops (and other GM products) which are theoretically attractive to farmers in simplifying their farm management and providing economic benefits. But how accurate are these claims?"

Oddly enough, a number of sites I tried to access to get current information about GM crops timed out and so the information was not available. This site is quite comprehensive and gives various paths to follow. As Greenpeace says it's about the right to choose and once you plant GM crops the cross contamination is unavoidable, so if GM crops prove unrelaiable, unsuitable or not what you want, then , bad luck, you other crops have already been GM'd and set to go.

SA defends planned GM crop ban extension.

SA defends planned GM crop ban extension. :

"'We have the technology that we could increase the potential of that crop by about three-fold on a year like this and it would be a viable crop and we're not using that technology,' he said."

Other countries are vigilant about not having GM crops. Some of them do not allow bees to exist int he area. Other countries are safe gauarding their food. There have been programmes and articles about how American farmers have struggled with GM crops. They are not good and anyone who knows about agriculture will tell you that. Please consult the wealth of information available. Our governemtn is absolutely right. GM crops are a big no-no. There have been probelms with exporting crops since most countries don't want them. NZ didn't want to feed them to their cattle.

Explosives caused school blaze

Explosives caused school blaze: police. :

"The damage bill is put at $1.2 million."

The new gym at Trinity Garden Primary School had only just been built and had not been officiially opened. It represented nearly 10 years of planning and fund raising by the school community. They suspect children have set explosives and set fire to the gym. Why? Why? Why? Are they your children? What made them think it was okay to do that? Who thought of it and why would young children explode a brand new gym? What on earth was going on in their heads and how come they have absolutely no community values whatsoever. Where did they get explosives and how come this is what they do in their free time. I really do think we need to have a good look at parenting because seemingly anything goes for some kids. The children of the school and the school community must be heart broken. This will cut very deeply and the adults and kids will rally and repair the disgusting mess, I know they will because it's for their children at the school. How come this is okay to do that kind of heartless , ultra destructive damage?

City squeezed for water

City squeezed for water :

"SA Water warned that the cutbacks, which aim to reduce household water consumption by 11 per cent, would be implemented over summer unless the state received comprehensive rains within weeks."

If our water is going to be a problem, why don't we start now? Let's get some things on the table that we can do...like not water in winter and not wash the car with a hose...because a bucket works really well and I have a nice , flashy car. You don't need to hose them off at all. At least get it going in a positive way because people just don't think.

Anger at oil firm's returns

AdelaideNow... Anger at oil firm's returns:

"'Oil producers have been making record profits off the back of motorists who have suffered record petrol prices.'"

Yep! It's called free market enterprise and sucked in car owners...because we made you a society which is vehicle dependent. Woo-hooo...we're rich, we're rich, we're rich.

Stop burying your heads in the sand

AdelaideNow... Stop burying your heads in the sand:

"'I'm disappointed Australians aren't bringing (Prime Minister John) Howard up and saying we want to be part of a global commitment.'"

We haven't been burying our heads in the sand. We have a government which goes LA, LA, LA, LAAAAA,LALA, LA...when we are talking serious issues. We have a government which is ignoring us. They stick their fingers in their ears and sing ting a ling a loo. They are not in the least interested in working with us and we have been on and on and on about climate change and other issues. We are doing what we can without them because, let's face it, the government has to fund things, set up initiatives , sign protocols...in short, LEAD. When they don't, we operate as teams and we can hook up but the major player has no listening skills nor is it able to work collaboratively with its nation. It is increasingly us and them and that is not a democracy at all. Now, Dr. Suzuki, you can rest assured we have been listening to you and other environmental speakers carefully. We have liked what we have heard and read and we have been discussing it in depth. I am glad I live in SA because the Rann government has done a lot for environmental issues with regard to energy initiatives and forward thinking. They are currently working on water , water, water and Adelaide has enjoyed some interesting environmental research projects. So please, don't tell us, tell our leaders!!

Bats' disappearance puzzles Qld scientists.

Bats' disappearance puzzles Qld scientists. :

"CSIRO bat researcher Louise Shilton says up to 50,000 spectacled flying foxes have not been seen since a week after cyclone Larry tore through north Queensland."

We have lost 50,000 spectacled flying foxes!!! They know we are going to joke about it. And we shall. They do say as blind as a bat so maybe when they left for the cyclone coming in, they lost their spectacles and just can't see their way back home. Surely someone must have noticed an influx of bats into their region. It's not as if you'd not notice 50,000 bats?! Surely they didn't split up and hide one by one all around the countryside? The regional growers are not unhappy because the bats do so much damage to plants and plantations....but they have been here for thousands of years. If they are not back , maybe they know something we don't know.

Rock art vandalism condemned.

Rock art vandalism condemned. :

"'If we went into a church and sprayed all around the church, we'd be put in jail for it.'"

Tribal elders make their points with simple, but powerful clarity. He is right. We'd be outraged. I wonder who did graffiti the tribal art. I shall be surprised if it is Australians because we do actually respect tribal paintings and the young ones especially have a special place for it in their hearts. It's like damaging dolphins or whales. It's just something we don't do. Walls, bridges, fences...well, that's another story. I hope they find the people who have damaged this art because it is part of our history and heritage. I hope they have to answer to the tribal elders. This cultural disrespect is unthinkable.

Jury duty at 103

Jury Duty:

"A 103-year-old Canadian woman has been excused from jury duty because it would have interfered with her afternoon nap. Phyllis Perkins, of Saskatoon, asked to be excluded. 'You get to be 103 and things aren't all there,' she said."

I am surprised they still call them up at 103, but the woman sounds like she has her priorities straight and a good sense of humour. How delightful is she?

Pay TV penetration 'to double by 2012'

Pay TV penetration 'to double by 2012' :

"Subscription television is set to double its penetration in the Australian market in the next five to seven years, the head of a local pay TV company says."

The article says we don't watch TV together and the sales of DVDs are going down. It's not my experience. DVD sales seems to be very popular whereas I seem to be one of a few who still buys CDs and yet CD sales seem okay. I think most people download music these days. I like the albums and covers. I like the art work as much as I like the music. DVDs may go down the downloadable road but people seems to watch films together and have film nights still. TV seems to be less and less popular because of the content but there are shows which are runaway successes. Pay TV is popular but a lot of people abandon it because there are too many things to watch and then you end up with a sedentary family. So, I actually wouldn't like to guess where this is all headed because just to complicate it , people have started talking about how much they like net TV!!

Don't park in bike lanes

AdelaideNow... Don't park in bike lanes:

"But the majority of motorists illegally driving or parking in bicycle lanes were unaware that they were breaking rules, Mr Trainer said."

When bike lanes are on both sides of the road and the letter box is on the kerb, you can't park hundreds of metres away and walk to post a letter, not when we work such long hours. They need to think of things like that and when cars need to park because the house driveway is full. The bike lanes are a great idea but turning onto another road becaomes hazardous at times because of the blind spot and not knowing where the cyclist is. Porfessional cyclists have a protocol. School students are a menace at times and it's hard to be perfect under those conditions and the clashing of amenities and bike lanes. A bit of awareness raising on everyone's part wouldn't go astray. Basically the system works but there are some really patchy parts.

Real bull bar menace

AdelaideNow... Real bull bar menace:

"'The polymer bull bars are much lighter and not as stiff as metal bars so in an impact with a pedestrian, they tend to give a bit more,' Dr Robert Anderson, of CASA, said."

What is it? A picture is worth a thousand words? The news tonight , in conjunction with researchers, showed and explained how metal bull bars were so hazardous to pedestrians. The lethal impact even at 15KPH was just so clear. It was a great piece of reporting and a real community effort. The researchers have done something really good for us and the news brought it home in a well presented, neat package. The polymer bull bars were obviously safer. The visual impact and lessons learned were instantaneous and you can't get better than that. Bull bars in the country and on the open roads are a different matter. Well done!!

Australian PM set for Solomons showdown over envoy

Australian PM set for Solomons showdown over envoy :

"'Mr Sogavare told John Howard despite this course of action it was his sincere hope that the two governments would continue to maintain and further strengthen the cordial relations between the two countries and peoples,' the statement said."

Yes, I'd liek to think our government could resolve this in a diplomatic, expert fashion instead of a knee jerk petty reactive way. Action instead of reaction. I 'd like to think they could consider the whole matter in a well considered, well thought out manner. We have worked with the Solomon Islands for a long time. I cannot beleieve we are being so squabbly no matter how it all looks without the full and complete details. What appears simple on the outside will be very complex and needs to be resolved in a far more complex manner.

Row breaks out on official visit

Row breaks out on official visit :

"But it was as if Deputy Opposition Leader Jenny Macklin forgot they were there when she accused Prime Minister John Howard of “deliberate Americanisation” of the university system."

I don't think our parliament should be censored in what it says because we have visitors. That would then be intimidation and quite clearly our new American ambassador is not about that. We have to dicuss things as we see them and we have to say what we want. At various times we have complained about the way our country has become non Australian whether it is because we are following the British pattern ( and I notice no one complains then nor is anyone gagged) or too much of an Italian influence or too much of this influence or that. Comments about our British influences can be scathing and totally unfounded but who cares. Now, for heaven's sake. We don't have Mum and Dad visiting. This is complete nonsense.

Butterflies on brink of extinction

AdelaideNow... Butterflies on brink of extinction:

"Experts from Butterfly Conservation SA and the South Australian Museum have predicted the extinction of butterflies by 2040 unless action is taken now to preserve them.

They have teamed up for a major long-term project to restore butterfly numbers in Adelaide."

We were running out of butterflies in this area. A couple of years ago they were noticeably and sadly lacking. We have been planting our gardens differently and we seem to have the butterflies back. I wish I knew what we had done because our butterflies come around and are pretty. We also seem to have increased our lady bird numbers because they, too, had become alsost non existent. We have palms, date and banana, native trees, flowers and geraniums and the big leafy philodendrons and monsteras.

Pollution 'worse for whales' than hunting.

Pollution 'worse for whales' than hunting. :

"'When you listen to some of the arguments that the anti-whaling countries put forward they are based on cultural or moral high ground and I would suggest that that's pretty shaky ground to be on.'"

True, we need to take global warming and pollution issues seriously. We have been saying that. We have all been raving on about how we are killing the planet . So to compare global warming deaths to targetted deaths doesn't really make sense. There is no moral high ground in preventing targetted deaths...of anything or anyone. Making comparisons about deliberate killing being less of a problem than environmental killing in no way excuses killing. More Americans have been killed in Iraq than at the WTC. Does that make one of the sets of arguments the moral high ground? Does it make one set of deaths less important? Whale issues are important and whale deaths...all whale deaths are important and need to be prevented.

Bread shops put heat on supermarkets

AdelaideNow... Bread shops put heat on supermarkets:

"“Many of our stores also have instore bakeries, where the bread is made fresh each day, and has both a “baked-on” and a “use-by” date on each loaf,” the spokesman said."

A lot of us just want simple bread. Bread made of bread. Some supermarkets have become adventurous and have supplied some decent bread to us baked on the premises. Around here , you have to get in early. There is never any of the fresh baked bread left over. But bakers have also become popular because we want home baked bread that is just nice, simple bread. Oh yes, we like our herb and fruit ones and we'll try the pumpkin and sun dried ones, but the trend is towards lumps of bread, baguette, ciabbata, pita bread and some of the simple turkish breads. We like to top or stuff our bread with filling. The better the bread, the yummier it tastes and you can tell the difference. I look forward to someone baking brioche!! Scones have also made a big come back because they are simple, easy and fresh.

Howard warns on 'state disease'

AdelaideNow... Howard warns on 'state disease':

"Mr Howard reminded MPs that being in the government party room was the one glittering prize of Australian politics and asked them “not to get distracted by state machinations”."

State machinations? It's our state, mate and we take an interest in the machinations. Anyone would think Australia was not able to be governed by any party other than Liberal. It's a very odd way of looking at things, especially when each state has such a strong character and such a strong resilience. At the State level we deal with, and overcome, so much. It's the federal government which is currently out of step because it is not thinking how we think. The states consult, discuss, debate, argue. They organise forums, committees, public meetings. We can talk to our state. I love their machinations.

Meteor causes panic in New Zealand

AdelaideNow... Meteor causes panic in New Zealand:

"Matthew Miller, who was working outdoors at Ashburton, south of Christchurch, said he saw a fireball streak across the sky, although he did not hear the sonic boom reported by witnesses in areas further north."

Now we've got low flying meteors in NZ with their sonic boom. How often does that happen? I have never heard of a low flying meteor before. I have been in that part of NZ. It's beautiful and very rural. It would have given the locals quite a fright because they live at an easy, civilised pace. I hope the animals weren't too startled.

Defence dubs 'smart bomb' tests a success.

Defence dubs 'smart bomb' tests a success. :

"The Defence Department has announced that it has successfully tested 'smart bombs' with the RAAF's F/A-18 Hornets."

Is smart bomb an oxymoron? Only our society would think of linking the two words. Just shows where our civilised heads are at.

Fish change sex depending on mates

Fish change sex depending on mates:

"A recent study by a team of Australian and American scientists have found changing sex is common among coral reef fish such as the juvenile bluehead wrasse."

How handy is that?!

Spectators filmed Brock death

Spectators filmed Brock death :

"Witnesses have told how dozens of spectators’ cameras were trained on Brock as he rounded a corner and slammed into a tree in the first leg of Perth’s Targa West rally last Friday."

We are living in the digital age and it is bringing some interesting dilemmas to the fore. So what do we do when everyone has their video equipment trained on someone who then dies? Do we show it for all to see? Do we sit back and relish the dying moments of someone? Do we take over what has been , until now, privileged information and do we deny grieving families the right to privacy? Do we all watch and put in our tuppence worth? We need to work it out. Additionally we need to consider how this can be misused. We also need to consider that we are supposed to be protected from terrorists and other unsavoury plotters. If the police are powerless to manage this, how can they then manage more sinister things? All those videos would have been taken in innocence. Do we have a way of protecting families? What would we do if someone barged into the hospice and filmed the final moments? We are neither protected nor safe and respect is becoming something we leave to the goodwill of others and have no right to demand any longer. I think we need to look at this very quickly. We could do a lot of harm and then again we could make ourselves rather blase about it all. We need to put our heads together on this one.

Calls grow for Govt to step up global warming fight.

Calls grow for Govt to step up global warming fight. :

"'I think it's very, very helpful to set these target so we know what we're working to and then have some flexibility as to how to meet those targets,' he said."

Dr. Alan Lloyd is talking a lot of sense, but so is Al Gore. It's good we are having this conference and discussion. We can do something about it. We can set achievable goals and we can work to them in consultation with others. Isn't that an intelligent approach? Global warming is affecting us. We should be doing all we can to resolve it and get ourselves on a better path.

Pacific a new front in war on drugs

Pacific a new front in war on drugs :

"With thousands of islands to choose from, highly professional, cashed-up organised crime gangs are using the Pacific as a base for the manufacture, storage and transhipment of amphetamines including ecstasy, crack, ice and speed."

We are a civilised lot , aren't we? What on earth is the matter with us? It's enough we have to face death on a daily basis from other sources but why would you manufacture it and sell it to people? It's shocking we would do this to the Pacific Islanders...not that they are not capable of protecting themselves and looking after themselves. They have been far more positive than we have been. Our society is mental. Truly. Haven't we had enough death ? We just keep dealing death to everyone. I really am sick of us.

Atlantis launch

NASA labels Atlantis launch 'flawless'.:

"After two weeks of delays, Atlantis and its six-member crew launched from the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral this morning Australian time."

It's always nerve wracking this on again off again , will it , won't it...oh, for Pete's sake...hoorah!!! At last and what an impressive sight. They still forget to take all the packaging off before they launch it because more bits have fallen off. I wish they'd get that bit right. Unpack it properly before you put it on the launchpad, guys! This is exciting because they are taking up solar panels for the space station and that will help the ISS produce more power form sunlight and provide a quarter of the space station's power. So how does the ISS supply its own power now because they can't just plug into the nearest electricity grid?

Rainbow Serpent

Rainbow Serpent dreaming endangered by mine expansion, say local Elders:

"JOHN BRADLEY: Rainbow serpents are generally associated with the wet season, floods, cyclones, strong storm winds and other sort of natural destructive forces.

So to stir up a rainbow serpent, to act in a way that is wrongful towards a rainbow serpent could bring any one of those manifestations to the fore."

The aborigines have lived in this land for a very long time and they understand it far better than we do even though we pretend we know what we are doing. This is why Steve Irwin was so important. He had a real understanding of our land and I am curious to know how the aborigines felt about him. Xstrata is mining on sacred land and wants to convert its zinc mine into an open cut mine. This would cut off the Rainbow Serpent's tail. I have watched the Expressway be built right through the Tjilbrucke Trail and it has changed the land which our aborigines know every part of. It's not a good idea to cut the tail off the Rainbow Serpent because it is part of the Dreaming. Xstrata is wanting to do it so it doesn't have to close the mine. They'll see. Sacred land is sacred land and it's so important to sustain a good dialogue with our indigenous people..

Animals may have their own personalities, study finds.

Animals may have their own personalities, study finds. :

"Researchers at the University of Tasmania believe animals may have individual personalities."

Surely this is not the result of their research nor the subject of it??!! Have they never had pets? No cats, dogs or birds? Have they never been around horses, goats, cows or chooks? Where have they been all their lives? Didn't they watch Gorillas in the Mist?? We know animals have their own personality traits. It's why we are careful when we acquire a new one and why they fill us full of surprise and delight. Surely this article has got it wrong.

Restrictions likely if dry spell continues

Restrictions likely if dry spell continues :

"'I can assure South Australians that if the dry spell continues and we get to crunch time then the Government will have no hesitation in implementing water restrictions,' Mr Wright said."

I figured this would come to Adelaide because it's been happening in other states. So for the past year I have had a dummy run on the water restrictions! I figured I'd rather and try and work it out for myself and see what I could do than be caught in the middle of a Government run drive which is okay but doesn't actually show any flexibility. Like the gutter washing and car washing etc. As long as the water ends on the garden does it matter that I hose my gutters as I water the garden with a hose, as I am allowed to..or I hose off the car as the water runs onto the lawn? For me it would save some wear and tear on my joints if I could do that and I would not be using more water. Don't panic, I have not disobeyed your rulings and I can assure you the water vans are out as soon as it is hot watching us. Bad luck they don't catch the families who run the sprinklers all day for the kids to play in when we live right near the beach!!....or a paddling pool would do the trick.

Police dog gets to bottom of crim hunt

Police dog gets to bottom of crim hunt :

"A burglar came off second best after being bitten on the backside by a police dog in Brisbane, officers say."

Good because the guy punched and kicked the dog as well as trying yet another house break in. 24 and he makes his job breaking into houses and cars. Pretty sad, but Tana showed him that life can just come and bite you in the bum when you behave like that. Great work, Tana. Our police and army dogs are fabulous. We don't hear enough about them.

Mighty Crows break Dockers

AdelaideNow... Mighty Crows break Dockers:

"The Crows were missing several key players through injury or illness, while the Dockers came into the game on a nine-game winning streak, but Adelaide pulled away in the last quarter to win 10.16 (76) to 7.4 (46)."

Adelaide was most certainly reeling from the news of Peter Brock dying. Our inimitable Don Chipp; our beloved author whom we all grew up on, Colin Thiele, our colourful mate, Steve Irwin and then the legend, the absolute legend and hero to us all, Peter Brock. We all grew up on Peter Brock too. He was so much someone to admire even if we didn't much like racing. In the end you watched him on Mount Panorama and the rallies because he was just so awesome...and he was such an individual, such a thinker, so much a person at one with his cars and racing. The rain just added to our thoughtful mood. But, we were all looking forward to the Crows match. Even those of us who were out shopping were keeping tabs on it around the shopping centre. No, we didn't watch it on free TVs...we actually asked each other. We were all full of warm communication today and had a sense of belonging to each other. Family. We were all family and we just wanted to know how our team was going. The Crows must have heard us. We were so much of the mind we wanted them to win. We just wanted to be pround of our team and the guys who have done it a bit hard lately. They didn't let us down and I am pretty certain we are all proud of them. There'll be a few Crows scarves at work on Monday!! Well done, guys.

Irwin's crew finish documentary

AdelaideNow... Irwin's crew finish doco: "Philippe Cousteau, who was co-hosting Ocean's Deadliest with Irwin, said Stainton called him at 5.45am (AEST) on Tuesday to ask if he would be part of the secret plan."

It is a mark of great courage and great respect these men have been back out to the reef to finish the documentary. It would have been so hard for them but it has been clear from their comments on television that Steve Irwin had had a profound effect on them and that they valued him enormously. Taking that boat out again would have been such an emotional thing. I admire their dedication to Steve Irwin. Human beings are just so fantastic sometimes.

Peter Brock killed in race accident

Peter Brock killed in race accident:

"Nine-times Bathurst 1000 winner and Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock has been killed while competing in the Targa West Tarmac Rally in Western Australia."

61 years with Peter Brock. Pe-ter Brock

D'Arenberg the world's best

AdelaideNow... D'Arenberg the world's best:

"A D'ARENBERG McLaren Vale wine has been voted the world's best single white for less than $25 in the Decanter Wine magazine's awards."

Another winner from our Southern Region. Yes, those guys have worked so hard to get it right. The whole area has lifted and everyone is just putting in a full on effort to get right up there...so it's nice to see the rewards for the big effort. Well done.

Milk protein mouthwash better than toothpaste

Milk protein mouthwash better than toothpaste: scientists.

: "'The market for a product like this in oral care is, if we can get significant penetration as a new toothpaste or a new mouthwash is about $500 million a year, so it's not small,' he said."

I suppose it doesn't make any difference if we slosh things round our mouth to clean our teeth. There's a real ritual about teeth cleaning and I am not sure we'll abandon the brushes. The liquid toothpaste would certainly be great for sore mouths and people who are ill or feeling weak. It's a great new development.

Radio Rentals technicians locked out.

Radio Rentals technicians locked out. :

"'Under the previous legislation we had the opportunity to go before the umpire - the Industrial Relations Commission and through the Industrial Relations Commission you could either conciliate or arbitrate,' he said."

I am sorry this is Radio Rentals. It's a grim state of affairs when we cannot negotiate like we used to. Talking and people are everything. Position bargaining resolves nothing.

Community confused on Hicks case: McCallum.

Community confused on Hicks case: McCallum. :

"'I'm extraordinarily comfortable with David Hicks receiving a fair trial in a military commission that's established by the United States Congress,' he said."

Well, that's nice to know. That's the trouble with the community. We always get everything wrong. I don't think we've had a thing right all year. I guess we are extraordinarily stupid.

Tourists staying and spending more

Tourists staying and spending more :

"Foreign tourists are staying in Australia longer and spending more despite slow growth in their numbers, new research shows."

In my experience , Australia comes as a surprise to many tourists. The size, the colour, the sameness and yet the great variety of landscapes and then the Australian way of life. They like walking on the beaches. They like the entertainment. They love the outback areas and the aboriginal things. They fall in love with our real Australia. Then they like the music and the food. Sometimes they come, go away and come back again. Others get here and are so at home and at ease they just stay on because they want to see more of Australia. What I really like about our tourists is they are prepared to travel the huge distances and visit some of the places we really value and they are prepared to talk to us and follow our suggestions. Then they come back with their own version of the trip and seeing it through their eyes gives us pleasure. The tourists are great. They just become one of the tribe really quickly.

$4m of heroin uncovered in booze bus stop

AdelaideNow... $4m of heroin uncovered in booze bus stop:

"HEROIN with a street value of $4 million has been seized from a car pulled over at a freeway booze bus in Victoria."

I have often blogged about how we need to tackle this drug problem head on. It is causing harm. It is pulling us undone and it is something which is worrying us and affecting the way we live. There have been a number of finds like this lately. It means we are working together as a community and that our police and airport officials are on the ball and are finding ways and means of dealing with it. Part of the problem is that it is not an easy arena to deal with and we have to be careful how we deal with it. It will gather momentum if we just say no to drugs like we say no to violence and no to cigarettes. We just have to get that headset adn then we will worry less and act more. But full credit to everyone who is trying to get this courge under control. We did used to live without drugs.

Winton riders in line for record.

Winton riders in line for record. :

"'It just looked amazing - there were locals around with kids, it was just a really good feel, it was something that I won't forget for a long time.'"

I like it when people with an interest bring it to the public to share by doing something fun and maybe even frivolous. We need to lighten up and an enthusiastic group trying to do something is very healing. It creates interest, purpose, amusement, diversion and it creates an impression ans well as maybe a record. It might be frivolous but it's very good community medicine. Like the dominoes things and the sand and ice art which is just awe inspiring. Good news indeed.

Irwins may refuse state funeral

Irwins may refuse state funeral :

"STEVE Irwin's dad Robert has indicated the family may refuse an offer for a state funeral for his son because he was 'just an ordinary bloke'."

It is not for us to decide and I said yesterday I thought Steve Irwin was more like a rellie to us than a stateman and that is why he shouldn't have a state funeral. He was a rellie, in my mind it has to be a family thing and we are all part of the extended family. Others at work were against that notion and were quite clear he had been a great ambassador for Australia and australiana and therefore what would you do for an ambassador? They were also making the point that people overseas had a bigger picture of Steve Irwin than we did and he was so well known and so much appreciated all around the world. A number of countries have featured him this week and are sharing our sadness. That says a lot about him and the over australian bit was a part of his media image but it wasn't the man. The family will have to make that painful decision.

Students learn to wipe out waste

AdelaideNow... Students learn to wipe out waste:

"'The program seeks to educate children about waste, as well as encouraging them to develop good waste reduction and recycling habits which they can retain for life and champion in their own homes,' Ms Gago said."

Things you learn when you are young usually stay with you. I have seen some great recycling ideas in other countries and the children drive and motivate it in a very energetic, then very informed way. There is a lot of waste because we have too much. Recycling is the way to go.

Banana Paper

Govt grants Papyrus Australia $1m. :

"Grant Pigot from Papyrus Australia says the tree trunks will be sourced from banana growing areas in north Queensland."

We've had very successful poo papaer...now we have banana paper!!! With the shortage of bananas we may start making sandwiches with it! We are truly banana deprived at the moment. Great news , though, but a bit of salt in the wounds at this point in time!!! You can't eat them...but we'll let you write on them...Saves energy though, so there is an up side!

Radio Rentals to lock out workers over contract dispute.

Radio Rentals to lock out workers over contract dispute. :

"'These are ordinary technicians that want just a collective agreement, they don't want to sign an individual contract, but Radio Rentals are playing it extremely tough in regards to these workers only asking for a collective agreement.'"

Radio Rentals has survived many market changes and from that point of view it can be judged to be a very successful company. It has survived against the odds. I am surprised it doesn't appear to want to negotiate and if it is prepared to lock technicians out for a month in an arena short of technicians, then I think it is not thinking very clearly. Negotiating is always better. Solving the problem instead of position bargaining.

Downer prepares to lock horns on troops

AdelaideNow... Downer prepares to lock horns on troops:

"“This is unresolved,” Mr Downer said."

Really!! I can't get over the newspaper heading. I have a vision of Mr. Downer standing there with his Viking hat on. That said...he is in an invidious position because this is a difficult situation to try and help with let alone try and resolve. Both Indonesia and Australia are aware of that and from that point of view we should draw courage. That both sides acknowledge there is a very tricky path and that the siuation is tense, means the talking will have to be low key and quiet but clear. I think the clarity is emerging.

MP letters 'call for Blair to quit'

AdelaideNow... MP letters 'call for Blair to quit':

"The BBC reported late yesterday that at least three letters are circulating among Labour MPs calling for Mr Blair to step down, one of which says he should do so immediately."

It's time to go....What's wrong with a reality TV show? PMT...Prime Minister's Time. When it gets to the stage of letter circulating I think you have to put it all on the table and have a good rummage through it. Don't waste paper. Deal with it upfront. Downing Street is never going to comment. That's the thing. The government can shut the door and pretend you are not there...so you pass around secret letters...come on, chaps, there's a better way than this.

Calls for new food label system

AdelaideNow... Calls for new food label system:

"NSW Health Minister John Hatzistergos said he had called on Food Standards Australia New Zealand to examine a new labelling system that would show how much exercise was needed to burn kilojoules in certain foods and drinks."

I don't know that the food labels are too confusing, but I have to remember my glasses so I can read them. The print is getting smaller and smaller. I want to know the calories/kilojoules. I want to know the nutritional breakdown. I want to know the list of ingredients and the country of origin. I also want to know, from other sources, the things stated in the article. Like how long does it take to walk, iron, run, jump, kick a Mars bar off? I also want a reminder about the additives and have easy access to that. I now also want to know if anything is GM modified. So does it sound I can't trust food just to be food and am I am living in an age where food and nutrition can be mutually exclusive. I used to just like eating. Now I won't buy unless I know and I will not buy if I am in doubt. I am fed up that in a civilised world we cannot feed ourselves on proper, nutritious, food, food. I tell you, when it's fresh it is so different!!!

Steve Irwin

Discovery announces Irwin 'Crikey' fund tribute. :

"'DCI is looking at the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which we'll affectionately call 'The Crikey Fund' to honour Steve's passion and exuberance for conservation and the animal kingdom,' he said."

That is an incredibly lovely thing to do. To us he is Steve Irwin. We often forget he is world famous because he was just Steve Irwin. For many children he is that uncle who went on great adventures and regaled them with tales of the weird and the mysterious. To children he was that person who knew no fear and who could light their eyes with the joys and wonders of their world. To adults he was that brother or brother in law who was always off on causes and doing daredeveil things with animals. Much of his conservation work was clouded by the larger than life media image. Much of his life was dedicated to saving and treasuring our environment. That do-gooder side he performed methodically and with thought but we saw the man who worked with snakes and crocodiles and who would work with the animals in such a gungho but knowledgeable way. He could seem bold and brash at times but you always knew he was trying to make you fearless as well. He was using his Australian approach to keep the things he loved alive. He wanted to people to understand animals and to respect them but not fear them. So much of him was dedicated to teaching young ones to see our animals might be scary but they were all right. Fear creates panic and panic means we will kill what we do not understand. Why now? We are all asking why. He has shown us the way. He rocket launched himself into our lives so that we do not forget him. He has set up the mechanisms for us to work with our wild life and to sustain our bush. Now is the test. Do we care that much about our animals? Do we care that much about conservation? Are we all talk? Can we actually look after our wild life and wild life areas ourselves? We can't keep having beacons and this is a testing time because money and property are everything. How much do we really care? In certain respects the offer of a state funeral is incredibly kind but I don't think it's for Steve. He was one of us. He was a part of our land and what we think we stand for. He could live our thoughts. That uncle, that brother, that brother in law who can keep our hearts in the right place by giving us an awesome sense of adventure and a way of making our thoughts reality. We all say we care about Australiana. So ,for me, it is very much the family thing. He is very missed. We dare not hardly talk about it for fear of upsetting his family or saying something out of line. You always respect the well loved rellies and you always tread carefully . We haven't lost a stateman. We have lost an uncle. A brother. One of our own. We haven't got it yet. We shall and then our hearts really will break because at the moment they are dissolving silently so that we don't disturb the universe.

Agassi leaves with tears as souvenirs

Agassi leaves with tears as souvenirs:

"“I have found loyalty — you have pulled for me on the court and also in life. I’ve found inspiration, you have willed me to succeed even in my lowest moments and I’ve found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on.”"

I heard this on the news on the way to work this morning and it was very touching. He spoke with such humility and yet he is so great and has achieved so much in his life. I am so glad he was given such a big farewell...and he has lost nothing. The next stage of his life will be an exciting challenge for him and knowing him, once he has had a rest, he will come up with something new and different.

New science degree course

AdelaideNow... New science degree course:

"The degree has an emphasis on the need for industry to measure, predict and minimise risks to the environment."

This has to be the shortest article I have ever found on the most important topic!!! I hope more details will become available since it is something which is timely, pertinent and highly valuable. We do need this sort of scientific approach so we can sustain our lifestyle but not at the expenze of our home.

Why teens won't get out of bed early

AdelaideNow... Why teens won't get out of bed early:

"Lack of sleep can also compromise a teenager's immune system, making them more susceptible to diseases, as well as depression, anxiety and obesity. UniSA consultant in children's sleep Sarah Blunden said adolescents were the most sleep deprived members of the community."

Teenagers are supposed to get 9 hours sleep a night and perform better in the early evening. Our school times are all wrong and we shouldn't worry they sleep in. I also heard they have to sleep more because they are growing. So how does all this research fit in with how they are expected to be? In many respects they have little time just to be themselves and they do not have the pleasure of seemingly endless holidays...one of the feeling I treasure from my own growing up. No wonder they are all skitter skattered. I wonder how many of them have to look after young children and hold the home together while parents work long hours? A good look at real family life might be interesting!!

Irwin died 'doing what he loved best'.

Irwin died 'doing what he loved best'. :

"Police say the 44-year-old died when was stung through the chest by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas.

John Stainton says the fatal incident was unprovoked."

Steve Irwin and dead are not actually words which belong in the same sentence so it took us a while to work out this was actually true. We went through the process of thinking we had misunderstood and that it was something which was hypothetical and not real. When we did realise it was true, then we just couldn't get it stuck into our heads. Heaven knows how his wife and family are coping because we are so full of disbelief. He was so well known to us. So full of energy and life. He was always doing risky things but he had such a love of nature and such a way with the most dangerous of them. He was an icon, a human. Someone who kept kids spellbound and who made adults laugh because he was so fearless and put nature above all else. He cared about our animals and environment. When you think about it he was probably always going to have something like this happen because he was undaunted in his will to understand what made wildlife tick. People like Steve Irwin do not come along very often. They are unique and irresistible. They had no hope of saving him even though they tried and it's true, he died right there with the things he cared about the most. I am certain his family will miss him and will take time to accept someone so full of life and purpose is gone. Our thoughts are with him. It's a sad, sad day.

Aussies make bionic eye breakthrough

Aussies make bionic eye breakthrough :

"“The next step from here is that we want to implant a whole bunch of these electrodes and then run a little wire under the skin to behind the patients' ear where we will have a little plug which we can attach to the computer.”"

Was it 6 million dollar man.. the one who was rebuilt and could do all sorts of amazing technical things? So here we are on the brink of the new millennium. Some real space age , high tech medicine. We just had to loosen up and flow with the new age! This is such exciting news, particularly for those who are trapped without sight for one reason or another. We have made some great break throughs for vision impaired people, but with the right sort of funding, this research could restore their sight and wouldn't that be a wonderful use of technology?

Cold could contribute to croc chlamydia outbreak.

Cold could contribute to croc chlamydia outbreak. :

"Last month thousands of captive baby crocodiles tested positive to the sexually transmitted disease."

I knew humans could get chlamydia and then we had a real scare with our koalas who became very sad and miserable with their attack of chlamydia...now crocodiles. You learn soemthing every day. I am impressed with how our researchers cottton on to these diseases so quickly and how they develop a strategy to treat our wild life as soon as they make a discovery. It's good to see us helping wild animals who would otherwise fall victime to these diseases. But did they get chlamydia before we were around? How is this happening? If they got it before, how did they treat themselves?

The Crows

This guy, the Crows captain, Mark Ricciuto played his 300th game on August 18th. Currently he has some weirdo slap virus which has taken it out of him a bit. He plays a very physical game and encourages his team to do the same by never hogging the ball. The Crows had a great start to the season...a real dream team, then the wheels fell of and they have taken some hammerings and injuries. They won their match at the weekend and showed us they not only have style, they have talent and courage too. Their capacity to come back is very heart warming and their capacity to fly high in the face of adversity is inspiring. It's a real lesson to us all that perseverence and persistence pay off in the end and success is something you have to work towards. So now they are second on the AFL ladder and we are coming up to the nerve wracking end of the season. Some high powered matches are in store for all of us. I wish the Crows well. Flying through the season is one thing...dropping from a height and pulling the plane out of a spin shows real grit.
