Driving interlocks for repeat offenders

"Under the scheme ... drivers who commit serious drink drive offences must, after serving their disqualification period, have an alcohol interlock fitted to their vehicles for a period of time equal to the disqualification.

We were talking about this over breakfast this morning ( champagne and pancakes...it's a hard life but someone has to do it) and we were talking about how few daft drivers there were around last night and this morning...so few we hadn't seen or heard any at all over New Year.It seemed pretty quiet and orderly and that was quite a change. I didn't realise the interlocks are like mini breathalizers where you have to register a no alcohol reading to start the car. One of the guys was sayign that some of them have to be blown into on a regular basis and the engine will immobilise if there is as alcohol reading. We thought that might be dangerous in traffic but then thought there would be some sort of warning. With everything new there is use and abuse and we'll hear some tales of woe I bet, but we thought these, at least, would be a deterrant to those who won't follow the perfectly logical designated driver tradition which we have always had here forever! It is so easy and so sensible. Drink driving kilss and maims. The statistics are there so I hope the interlocks work.
